Thank you, Paul, for all your videos. You have taught me so much about bass and fishing. I just caught a couple bass on incident banks using a swimbait. You teach. You don’t sell. That is refreshing, opposed to watching videos that flash $100k boats, motors, rods, the brand of lure you’ve got to have. I hope you keep doing what you do.

Hi, Mike. Thanks. Good to hear you are catching. Yes, I'm doing what I'm interested in. I understand the commercial side of things, and worked in the business at one time. But, I have limited time to put into my long-time passion of understanding what goes on under there. If I could gain sponsorship, fine, as long as it doesn't eat up my time or skew the whole reason I started a channel in the first place. I'm not doing this to run a YT channel. I'm so far relying on Patreon, and people sharing my channel with friends. The more the merrier is the way YT, by itself, works. Thanks for the encouragement. Cheers, Paul

I enjoy your videos... but you got the old proverb wrong. It is “If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day; If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.”
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 4 года назад
Hi, Nathan. Yeah, I know. I took liberties with it, and could have said, "paraphrased" :) . The ideas the same though, whether we give a man a fish or show him how to catch one. To be consistently catching though requires more. Cheers, Paul

@@thenatureoffishing7591 I also really like your videos. Some of the best fishing stuff on RU-vid. I caught the bad proverb right off the bat and scrolled to see of someone else called it. I read your reply and thought, "meh, no biggie" amd returned to the video just in time to then hear you say, "that's the point of the proverb". In reality you took liberty with the proverb to make an albeit valid point but, that isnt the point of the proverb at all. Keep making videos. I'll keep watching. You're for sure getting the one eyebrow on this one though.
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 4 года назад
Hi, Rick. I guess I'm going to have to give a one eyebrow back at you. :) The point of the proverb, as I understand it, is that teaching someone to fish will provide them fish for a lifetime. Versus a one-off, such as what would happen if we told someone to go to a certain place, at a certain time, cast a certain lure, in a certain way. Same result. Could just as well "give them a fish". Hi, Jeremy. You're SO welcome! :) If you haven't already found it, my second documentary follows the development of young bass through their first year. The focus, again, is on behavior with special interest in bass' cognitive development, setting the stage for coming docs on the behavior of adult bass. And... if you haven't already been around the channel, The Nature of Fishing (TNF) has four playlists: -Documentaries that give us a better understanding of the fishes themselves, currently focused on LMB; -Fundamentals that provides important background information, in depth. Info that comes up in our Video Fishing Journals (VFJ’s). -Fishing Tackle Know-How, where we take an in-depth look at the tools of the trade, taking the fish’s perspective into consideration; -Video Fishing Journals (VFJ’s), where we hit the water together and decipher the system, and the conditions & circumstances, in front of us. And to put our knowledge and decisions to the test. Be sure to share with friends. The more the merrier is the way YT works. Cheers, Paul

Hey, UBS. Now that is awesome! And a new one on me. Highly likely you are reading that right. I used to do a lot of steelhead fishing. At low water, those steelies would lay low, go "stale" we called them. Fishing was darn tough. Then I noticed that every time a drift boat came through, there'd be a short flurry of biters. Scarcely a need to cast, until a boat came through. Paul

I absolutely agree with your assessment of technique explanations. “Depending on conditions....” ........what? Expand on that, man! “I use natural colors, transparent and this sparkly, flashing clown color with the KISS logo....you know, for certain conditions...” *gene simmons fish swims by in the background* I understand the challenge. There are an infinite number of variables out there...but broad strokes and one or two details can at least get you on the right path. Great stuff as always man 🤙

Hey, manifestgtr. Yes, I'd almost say I wish it were easier; Then again, I'm glad it's a challenge. That's... the challenge! :) I do pretty much the same with my colors. There was a time though when I just went, mostly, black or white. Still generally do in my spinnerbaits. I enjoy "bluegillizing" my crankbaits, and swim-jigs though. Dunno if it makes any difference. But it's fun. And yeah, we do have to make room for the Gene Simmons fish out there. There's probably a little Gene Simmons in every one of 'em. :)) Paul

Large mouth bass remind me of dogs out in the country trying to bite your truck tires as you drive by, that being said it’s hilarious some of the lures and tactics we use to hunt them. I’ve always liked large mouths cause they go air borne and try to murder your lure at certain times of the year! Paul, thank you for your patience with large mouth bass! I haven’t fished much in the past during the winter for them but your videos make me want to saddle up! 😎🎣

Hi, Casey. A friend of mine once said, "Ya know, I started catching more bass when I stopped trying to feed them!" :)) There's some serious truths in there. I love winter fishing. As long as I'm dressed for it. I finally got out yesterday for the first outing, 45deg air and wind, and I'd forgot a few things, like my heavy thermals and fleece socks. My lips and hands were purple when I got off the water. And that wasn't "winter". First trips are always a little rough.

Paul I have really enjoyed your videos. I have often wondered how long a fish's memory lasts. What I mean is, if a bass is moved from the "hunt" mode to the "predator avoidance" mode due to a loud disturbance such as a large lure, a jumping fish on the line, or a starting of a boat motor. How long do they stay startled? Understandably, the variables make it difficult to be exact. But is there a rule of thumb?
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 Год назад
Hi, Brandon. Great question. You are right there are variables at play: species, individuals, conditions, circumstances, contexts, experience with fishing… . Short answer (that I can thumb type): Most fish want to get back to business after a disturbance. If it’s a small disturbance, they may even be willing to bite right away. Move a fish away from a shoreline and you might be able to cast ahead in the direction he went and catch him. But scare one good, esp out of a risky location, and it may take longer to settle down. Memory on the other hand can be longer, say in recognizing a given lure as “not food”. Some research has indicated that this can hold for months. A trick I pull is to offer fish a different lure after they’ve understood that the first (or more!) are “not food”. Another trick is to rest a fish then sneak back undetected. This has made biters of wary individuals. How long to rest them depends… . Five to 10min is usually long enough. Species matters: I always gave brown trout more time than brookies or rainbows, say.

Totally read the conditions today with the wind, the cold and the drizzle. It was tough especially on a tough lake to catch Bass in 46° water so I went to a smaller lake when I thought hey could be warmer water. Choose a cove with access to deep water, it was protected from the high winds, it's a known bedding place on the lake (well known be me). Crayfish haven't made a visual appearance yet so I know they are possibly targeting shad so I broke out my jerkbait. I've never caught one on a jerkbait so I just worked it the way everyone says to, then I felt a doink and then my rod started loading up so I started reeling. Caught my first jerkbait fish (lmb) of my life and I was hooping and hollering in the cold because I just did something I've never been able to do before. Two casts lateri catch a huge crappie on the same jerkbait now I didn't catch anymore than that in the jerkbait but I did lose one at the bank on lipless crankbait with a Willow blade on the back of it on a bad cast up shallow lol. I'm not saying it's all because I watched your video on this and the second addition but I am going to say what you explain certainly influenced my decisions to where, when and what!!!! Your advice based on your findings is legit and solid facts which is making me look pretty dang awesome to my friends who say you can't catch anything in this cold weather lol 💯🎣👍💪🔥
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 4 года назад
Hi, NTF. Congrats on your jerkbait fish! They will catch you many more. They have such great attraction and triggering power. And the fact that they can suspend in place, makes the pauses deadly in cold water. Keep fishing em. Don't worry about "technique", it's all about the acceleration, and the pause. Cold water bassin'... I remember, a number of years back now, I was fishing a large pond from the bank. A man stopped to tell me it was too early for bass. And I caught one right then. He said, "Well I'll be. You won't see that every day." I broke it to him, "Bass are very catchable in cold water. That was #17 for today." Great to hear my vids are giving you stuff to think about while you're out there. It'll come together as you go. Best, Paul

Hey, Michael. That's what's been interesting about my "job" here: deciphering what nature dishes out, with a human brain, and putting it into language we can, hopefully, all understand. Yes, C, & C, are related. Between you and me, since you brought it up (I think), I wondered if I even needed to add Circumstances to Conditions. But I decided that Conditions (the state) are what happens to the aquatic environment when Circumstances (events) happen. Could be seen as complicating things, from a fishers standpoint. But, I have to separate things, take them apart, and put them back together again, I guess. Funny, my brother operated the same way, but mechanically. He dismantled every machine he could get his hands on, just to see what was inside. He was a toddler who had to be kept away from electrical outlets. He came into the world at a good time; He's now global high mucky-muck of network administration for a large corporation, doing... whatever global high mucky-mucks do. Me, I'm still "wandering around behind the little animals" (sans the stimulants). :)) When he was 12, he ran a tv and radio repair shop in the basement of our home. Me, I made and ran a nature museum. I believe I got one adult visitor, who actually paid the 10cent admission. I considered it a success, but realized "success" needed to have a different interpretation. Paul

Hi, Khoi. Yes, I just can't keep up with the YT algorithm. It essentially requires continuous uploading. And I've never been interested in running a "this is my life" vlog. So, it doesn't look like I'll be quitting my job and full-timing my channel anytime soon. It does get a bit frustrating NOT working on TNF. I do get nearly 100% positive feedback and that's been encouraging right along. As to saltwater fish and fishing, I've done some of that, even ran saltwater fly-fishing camps for a while. And fish's, both FW and SW, responses to tides are quite fascinating, and pretty much in line with what FW fish carry in their behavioral 'tool kits'. But, I do not have SW nearby at present. But that may change as my wife and I retire. Looking forward to that. Cheers, Paul

Zack, I don't identify locations not bc I'm keeping secrets; These are pretty average waters (part of the point of the channel actually). But bc I don't want other anglers I share water with to be concerned about me "televising" waters we share.

I've been catching thousands of bass over the last 25 years or so. I've learned so much from this man's videos in the last week that I've been watching them. Idc who you are, there is a lot to gain from watching this library. I hope it stays public for all to soak up for many decades to come.

Such a unique approach to teaching about largemouth angling, truly the only channel I've found that explains so much about why, and not just promoting some company's lures. I greatly appreciate the time and effort you put in for our benefit Paul, especially since I'm confined to bank fishing mostly ponds, which is also a unique aspect of this channel that gets almost zero attention on other channels. Keep up the amazing work.

Hi, Ben. Thanks. Yeah, I found that out too. Sometimes you just gotta do stuff yourself! :) I understand the commercial aspects behind the time spent to get info out. I'm not even against it, as long as it doesn't take up my time. This is a part-time, full-time undertaking for me. Thanks for the encouraging comment. Cheers, Paul

0:47 - "Teach someone to catch a fish and they'll be fed for a day...teach them TO fish and they'll be fed for a lifetime." You doubled up on the same thing...teach fishing Pretty sure it's ***GIVE*** a man a fish and he's fed for a day.....teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime.

Hi, R C. Yes, you are not the first to miss the meaning in the liberty I took with that parable. My "bent" was: Teach a man to catch A fish, compared to Teach a man TO fish. The first may be accomplished with info limited in scope. The second requires the why's lying beneath the what, where, when, and how. Paul

Following up, I just spent 2 hours trying to find other resources on this topic. It's really difficult to find anything. You should make this a book or expand on this more. Maybe a udemy course, if you don't like books.
