Middle Bayou. Technically speaking, water property owners co-equally own the lake. If you own the property on a lake, river, or a bayou, you own it to the middle of the waterway. So, in fact, lake front owners do own the lake. Not knowing the history of Hamlin Lake, or any waterfront property, I can understand why you might not know this. The Hamlin Lake of today was created when Charles Mears, then owner of all the property surrounding the Lake, dammed the Sable River. When the land was sold to private individuals and the dam burst, it was the Hamlin Lake Dam Association that organized to maintain the lake and the dam. That organization was created by property owners along Hamlin Lake. While it is true that people who own Great Lake Frontage do not own the beach, that's because historically speaking (and this dates back to pre-statehood) the beach has always been a public highway. However, if you own property on any of the Great Lakes and whatever lake you lived on receded to only 30' wide, you will legally own all the land up to the state border. Another example of this is Muskegon Lake. In North Muskegon there is a road that runs along Muskegon Lake; however, it is underwater. There are people who own property on the lake that currently have lake front property but are behind that road. If ever Muskegon Lake was to recede, those people would not be entitled to any lake front property because their property ends at the county road. When the water receded a couple decades back, those property owners that lost access to the water were not entitled to dredge their property to create that waterfront access, because they did not own waterfrontage. When the dams broke on the East side of the State, those property owners were entitled to protect their property on their unflooded land up to the natural river. That was because they owned that property. In Michigan, property owners are limited with what they can do along the waterway or out into the water way, for example on Hamlin Lake you are not permitted to build a permanent dock, they have to be removable, and they can only extend so far into the lake. In other parts of the country, homeowners are less restricted, and thus can cut off boaters from accessing a waterway. I don't recall that sign while I was growing up. What they originally may have been attempting to prevent are people coming up on shore and fishing from the shore. Shoreline fishermen can (often) believe that someone else's waterfront property is their lake access. We had to have signage on our dock when we owned property that there was no trespassing. If something happened to someone on our property, we were potentially liable for it. We had, case in point, someone dive off into the lake, hit their head on a rock in the water, becoming paralyzed. Not only were we responsible for the injury, because we didn't also have signage on the dock indicating no diving, we were responsible for the rocks in the lake and had to remove them. As I recall, the home that sits above was a much smaller cottage and the owner of that cottage was a cantankerous person. As a kid, he didn't much like us kids encroaching on his land (up on the hill). I also don't recall the hill or waterfront people improved (a break wall). So, some things have been improved there. Likewise, the property to the right of it, with the white boathouse, I knew well. In fact, I was pushed into the weedy bayou by my sister off that break wall when I was a child. The boathouse was added later. My guess though, because the improved land on either side of it, that small strip of land is owned by a third party. So, yes. People who do live along the lake do in fact own the lake. They do not own the water itself and cannot prevent you from using or accessing the waterway via public access, but they can and have a legal responsibility to prevent you from using their land in order to use or access the waterway. That said, I approve of your choice of ice cream, though your wife's choice interests me. Bubble Gum ice cream was always a favorite because not only did you get ice cream, but you got bubble gum pieces as well.
