That's an "affordable" challenge that is closer to my home than guys in "without busting the bank" series, who spend over 3 times the wage most people get here (and close to 2 times the official "medium wage"). These are basses and amps I would (and actually did at one point) look at. But hey, we live in different worlds, that's not a criticism at all. It's also great to see people actually happy with what they got, even though it's pretty cheap ;)

Personally the cheap bass powerful amp would be a better choice for gigs. Unless you're plugging in straight to PA and then the better bass would be a better choice.

Depends on the situation. If you're joining a band (especially a loud rock band that already gigs), it's not a bad idea to grab a better amp/cab first. I did my first couple of years on big cabs (Ampeg 810, GK NEO 412) and good amps (GK 700RB, Ashdown ABM 900) using a Classic Vibe Squier. No issues. I did upgrade my basses later on (Fender P and Music Man Stingray are my mainstay now). But CV Squiers do feel alright and don't break the bank. But yeah, a good quality instrument definitely gives that awesome feeling.

Hey guys, really appreciate the concept (especially for new and aspiring bassists), but I find myself doubting whether these amps could hang with a rock band.... My advice to young bassists would be: these are fantastic practice amps, but start saving for a more powerful rig, you'll need it!

Joining a band is the best thing you can do for your progress as a player. Beginner bands do not have PAs. So you can join a band with the 100W amp, but not with the small amp. Plus, if you worry about your sound, the amp does it. There are amps that you can plug anything into and it just sounds great! Amp all the way!

I think that Nathan had the right idea. I would probably go with a different bass at a similar price point but this is the same kind of amp that I have bought and use for band practaces. It has no issues with keeping up volume wise to a drummer and the flexibility of sounds is just excellent. While I still have my big rig I have simply not needed it since I purchased the Fender.
@MravacKid
@MravacKid 7 лет назад
While in general it's better to get a better instrument because that's what you're in direct contact with, even the cheapest modern instruments are of decent enough quality that you can usually go for the cheapest one you like the feel of, and spend most of the budget on an amp as that has more of an effect on the sound in the entry level market.

I started with the same Ibanez bass together with a Rumble 60 (the old looking ones). Some comments from real life experience. I played with some friends in a band for a couple of years and did some gigs. The bass had a very poor setup. The string action was way too high. I could put my fingers under the strings. It is easy to correct. The pickups are nothing special. The electronics in my bass were very bad. The bridge pickup used to go completely off when I used the volume knob, so I had to turn it like a radio station knob and catch the channel somewhere in between. The other thing was the buzz. The sound technician at our gigs was always going - where is this nasty buzz coming from. As for the feel - it is a nice guitar. I like the neck. It plays nice. Would I recommend it - not really. I still keep it and plan on switching the pickups and electronics and see how it goes. Recently I decided to switch countries and travel a bit. I wanted to buy an entry level bass again. I tried the cheapest Squier jazz bass. The instrument felt cheap I didn't really like the feeling, but it was great to play. The pickups were not that great, but as an entry level bass I would go for the Squier, although I would really recommend to go for a Classic Vibe Squier (which are very good). The store where I tried the Squier had that model and a MIM Fender, so I went for the Fender. Buying a more expensive bass does not guarantee no problems with electronics, as the pickup switch on my MIM Fender has some problems from time to time. For the combo I would go for 100 W as well. I could play with a 60 W but when the drummer got excited I had to turn the volume to 10 and the sound got worse. The Rumble series is nice I am not sure for the new lighter ones. I played a Rumble 15, which was very bad. I had to play for several minutes to get a decent sound. I have a Hartke 15, which sounds a lot better. One thing to keep in mind - 15 W amps have smaller speaker, which sound poor for a bass guitar. I would go for a 10" one. One other thing to note is that it is very hard to make the best purchase in the beginning, so don't think about it that much. I have a Fender MIM PBass. At one point I bought an acoustic Kingman. I found out that I like the neck of the Jazz bass a lot more, so I guess at some point I will get a Jaguar. Go in any store play several basses and pick the one you like the best.

I’m a guitarist and I have an old early 00s ibby Indonesian base model with active pickups and preamp. Other than the need for a 5 string I can’t bring myself to sell or trade it because it sounds and plays so great. Wanted to get a p bass but not giving up my pawn shop find bass. I think I paid 200. It could be a lower mid to mid model but don’t know my Ibanez basses like I do my guitars. Don’t pass up a well cared for old Ibanez bass or guitar.

I bought the Sub ray bass in 2015 because I really wanted that type of bass guitar at the time. I bought a £120 eden bass amp to have fun with. Now I've joined a band and upgraded to £670 Mark Bass amp for gigs. I'd highly recommend this route, as you never know how far you want to take your playing! Anyone that needs a "giggable" amp should already have a bass they like. How else did they get to the stage where they feel they could play gigs?

It might be an option to show how well amps etc perform when up against guitar amps in a live environment, as I doubt even that 100W would push through enough. Bass frequencies are much lower in a live mix, I had to turn up my speaker to hear the Fender amp when the EBS was playing the higher range stuff at the start of the clip. I also like how the cheaper Ibanez sounded really good for the price.

I've been a guitar-player for over 15 years and basically never touched a bass in all that time, but I still wanted to get into it for the fun and experience of course. I found an old Jazz-style bass at a second hand shop for which they asked like 80 Pounds, and I got it for 70 Pounds. The only thing I needed to do was clean possibly 20 years of gunk off of it (it was really nasty, definitely owned by some careless greasy rocker), but apart from the wear it looked almost like new after. It was structurally fine as well (something you have to really check), and considering this one's from the '90s, has been dragged around through all kinds of environments, given a beating by its owner(s), and probably collected moist and dust for many years, and STILL is in good shape, it really proved its quality already. Then I happened to find an old amplifier, which was just a meant to be kind of thing, cause it's the perfect size as well, and it's an old Roland Cube from the '80s, still works and sounds great (the shop owner even cleaned the potentiometers from dust), and I got it for 90 Pounds. Add some new strings (cause the old ones were so disgusting with grime and rust, even soaking them in spirit didn't help one bit), and the package cost me just under 200 Pounds. This doesn't benefit shops like Andertons (sorry), but you can get a lot of good used stuff for even less money if you're on an even tighter budget than 500 Pounds. Just know what you're looking for and make sure you're not getting ripped off (both in price and integrity of the items). Oh, and you'll have to not be so picky on the way it might look. If you want a completely fresh and shiny package, you might have to forget about that for a while and buy for the functionality. I definitely learned to stop caring, cause ai got great stuff out of it.

But it's hands down the best amp in that price bracket for tone and overall oomph. I play a Fender MIM Jazz through it (approx €900 in Ireland but I got mine for around €750) - sounds fantastic through the Ampeg.

If you're doing a cheap bass rig, the best thing is to buy a £200 squier and then a £300 bass amp. A cheap bass through a decent amp will sound infinitely better than an expensive bass through a cheap amp. Speaking from experience here, my first bass was my dad's Fender jazz bass through a fucking awful 20w peavy amp with a 10" speaker and it sounded awful. As soon as I upgraded to a nice 15", 180w ashdown, the difference was astronomical.

I think it boils down to what you want. If you don't have a band spend more on the bass because you will progress easier and feel like practicing more. If you gig you should spend more on the amp. Either way, if you get serious about playing bass, you will end up spending a lot on both! And some pedals, good cases, divorce, etc.

I like someone said a few month back in another video .. Why doesn't the shop not sell such packages at various price points .. If the retailer is willing to do such video's in order to attract sales from customers by visting the shop and via online .. it makes perfect business sense to sell guitar packages be it Acoustic / Guitar / Bass ... . Like to hear what you're thoughts are ...
