Hi everyone, welcome back for Part 2 of my analysis of BTS's Tiny Desk Concert! It's been wonderful to see such a positive response and appreciation for my detailed breakdown of what's happening vocally, and overall musically in this awesome BTS performance. i feel like you would really enjoy their 2021 FESTA (Yearly Anniversary Celebration of the Group&Fans) BTS ROOM Live Performance. It's a Mash-up of a LOT of different songs, a little trip through their songs from oldest to newest and gives you a good sample of their catalogue. It also highlights a few of their pure rap songs! there definitely is a backtrack, to give the performance a fuller sound and to patch little adlibs here and there that was originally done in the studio version. but in this performance, the backtrack can be easily picked apart from the live vocals, which is why it's my absolute favorite video when i just wanna bask in their voices!

I would recommend also watch BTS Festa Room Live 2021. This is a medley of songs performed live, where they’re also up and moving around a little bit more. The songs included in the performance range from their first album in 2013 to their most recent album in 2020. Just a little background, “Festa” is what they call the annual celebration of their birthday as a group, from their debut date 6/13/13. They usually drop a lot of freebie content for their fans during the first couple weeks of June. This video came from the 2021 Festa.

RM, who is the guy in the denim suit, is quite fluent in English. In fact he has addressed the UN General Assembly in English. For the "lip-sync" part, I think that what happened was that he was about to sing that line, but opted last second not to. It could be because of muscle memory. As you might have read from other comments, their performances are dance-heavy, and if they're not dancing they're still jumping and running around the stage. Since there's a lot of choreo and timing is very important for those kind of packed performances, they have to rely on muscle memory for choreos and some singing parts. They wouldn't be able to function with so many things to think about at the same time. Therefore, since this version was different than the one they usually perform, he might have been following his instincts implanted through the hours of training, and remembered just last second that he wasn't supposed to go for it for that version, so he just mouthed it. They use backing tracks to support the stability and fullness of their voices during performances or add extra layers of armonies. In the case of the last two songs however, I would almost consider those backing vocals more like voice samples that are part of the instrumentation, rather than singing support. Mainly because they could be distinguished very easily and they were purposely not singing in those sections. I don't know if I made any sense with this 😂

Having watched their Fix You cover of Coldplay's song, you would probably enjoy the collaboration they did with Coldplay doing My Universe. There is a music video of it and there is also a video of the according of the song in which Chris Martin from Coldplay travels to Korea during the pandemic and spends a couple of days recording the song with them. Fascinating project and the behind the scenes video left me a bit choked up.

Just so you understand Jungkook and Jimin do most of the background vocals so they have to do a backing track to do all the harmonies. But he is used to doing all the harmonies so that was the reason for raising the mic to his mouth. It wasn't lip sync per se. The dedicated Baritone is V the one with the tie, even though while he was doing english he started singing higher. They are not all fluent in English just RM (the one with the blue hair) he also speaks in Japanese along with Jimin the one on the right end.

Yeah, that was a backing track, they usually have that to provide more of the background vocals. They also are a dance-heavy group, so they'll use it (a backing track) occasionally when there's strenuous choreography preventing them from singing. The thing with BTS is they don't try to fool you with lip syncing. If it's only the backing track no one is pretending to really sing, although you may see them mouthing along. There's actually many performances where that's clear, like one where Jungkook (orange jacket) starts laughing and can't sing and it's very clear he is live. Yoongi (second from left) has purposely stopped rapping a few times to prove he's live (often the audience fills in). If one of them gets out of breath someone else will take over. I'm sure there have been venues where they've been told to do it for some reason, but it's not something they ever want to do.
@nickiturner1164
@nickiturner1164 2 года назад
Something I think you might find interesting! The reason they usually only have 1 or 2 singers singing at a time, despite there being 7 of them, is bc their normal performances have a very strong emphasis on dance. So generally, the person singing at any one moment is doing less moving, whilst the other 6 do some very intense dancing. And obviously you need to breathe to do that. It’s why a lot of their songs are structured that way and you wouldn't necessarily notice in a stripped down performance like this one. I think this performance is a really good example of that if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wSNd02kVv8o.html

I have watched dozens of clips and Jungcook (JK) often does this when some other members are singing, imitates without intention, because he enjoys performing so much because he has an incredible voice and doesn't need to prove anything when it comes to singing. Jimin who has the beautiful angelic voice was chosen as a member very late just before they debuted in 2013 . He was chosen for his years of Contemporary dance and hip hop dancing, he had no vocal training and virtually trained himself. He asked if he could watch the other vocalists having lessons then went back to their Dormitory and practised for hours in his own time training himself to sing. Also this an on-line concert for the fans. Thankyou for your reaction. They have evolved from 2013 to 2023 in many ways. They struggled during the Pandemic because they had to stop live concerts. 😊

There are some pre-recorded choirs; are parts of the song that Army (their fandom) sings at a concert, they left them as a reflection of nostalgia and because they miss being with Army. The one in the orange jacket with purple microphone is the main vocalist and his voice is very stable. The one in the floral shirt with the gold microphone is considered a light tenor or even a countertenor. And he is a lead vocalist. The one you mentioned was an example of a light falsetto, it's the only baritone in the vocal line; his voice is deep and soulful, but very versatile and with the widest range of the group.

Thanks for your reaction. The singer with the purple mic, 'JK' is the lead singer of BTS & also lays down the master when recording for the rest to sing their parts to. Yes, there was a backing track, it is obvious and they are not trying to hide it - it is clearly audible & JK was singing along, just as there were horns playing in dynamite and no hon players in the band - not synthesized, etc. I think you would enjoy their hearing the vocalists in the group perform "House of Cards' live version, a song from years ago & 'Film Out' a Japanese track they recorded last year - the Music Blood or CDDT live versions have the best audio. Look forward to more BTS reactions, I enjoy your commentary! :)I love how you appreciate the instrumentation as well, the guitar, bass & drums were going ham, especially in 'Spring Day.'

Yes, there is a backing track. But Jungkook (the singer in the orange jacket) didn't actually mean to lip-sync the "save me-me-me" part--it was literally a timing mistake, where he forgot that they weren't singing that line live.

Bc the majority of their songs are usually performed with an accompanying dance routine or in large stadiums they almost always have some sort of backing track to get the right sound mix & help fill in where they might need a breath. That particular part in Save ME is a dance break where they are dancing very hard & energetic choreo so they don't sing those "save me, me, me" parts & just let the backing track play. For future reference on this, BTS don't bother to lip sync, it'll be very obvious if they're just letting the backing track play (you'll see this a bit more clearly in, for instance, Jimin's solo performances of Serendipity as his main focus for certain parts of the song are the choreo over the vocals so he'll just let the backing track take over & doesn't bother trying to "fake" that he's singing bc he isn't for that part though he is singing over the backing track the other 80% of the time). Not sure if this is something you're aware of, but BTS most definitely employ the backing track & live sound mixing techniques that MJ pioneered & perfected, so if you pay attention during their live stages with choreo you'll notice the hallmarks of those techniques (backing tracks low in the mix but enough there to pad out any rough spots during choreo while allowing the live vocal to cut through & shine, only certain small sections/vocal chops being brought forward in the mix for artistic affect & emphasis, etc). They write their songs WITH the dancing & performance of that song live on a stage in mind so that they can majority of the time be able to sing it live & achieve that full bodied sound

Yeas they have different positions main lead and sub vocals, dancers and rapers. This is something that influences in they responsibilities. For exemplo JK (the guy in orange suit) is the main vocal, because his voice is the more stable so he used to have more lines and he is responsable for recording the vocal guide to help the others, Jimin the guy on the right is lead vocal, so he is normally responsable for sing the parts they want want to highlight. It doesn't means that in some songs they don't do different, but it is how normally goes.

I mean a true good representation of seeing what BTS is really capable of is watching them in their full element. Like performances like these are cool, but BTS are BEASTS on stage. Their stage presence is killer and they can sing AND dance at the same time and have crazy stamina. Cuz their concerts average 2,5 hours and they'll sound stable all throughout. Watch their GRAMMY 2022 - BUTTER performance for a taste! And watch their MMA2019 performance after that for the full scope of their capabilities. You'll be blown away. It's 40 minutes of them at a Korean award show completely shutting down the place with their awesomeness. But the recent GRAMMYS is a nice prequal to that showing their showmanship. So please react to that. And thanks for this reaction, cuz I love hearing more professionals break down performances like this.

There's a backing track with the gang vocals of Spring Day (it's something the audience is supposed to sing along to), the synths of Save Me (the chorus of that song is a dance break) and a few of the alibis. It's pretty easy to tell apart those from the live singing here, I think, since the backing stuff is more muffled/less upfront. I don't think Jungkook was supposed to lipsync that alibi, I think he just got "into it", and yes, most of them are pretty bad at lipsyncing... Honestly, even on their music videos, they rarely match the vocals, some of them don't even try, it's almost embarassing.

Hi Peter: One thing to know about BTS is they give the ARMY clues to what the future holds for BTS. The Fix You Cover was a clue for a project that was happening in the future with ColdPlay project. Turned out they did a song called My Universe with ColdPlay. You should react to the Music video. If you're ARMY you know even the simplest thing can be a clue. Usually we look back and realize they told us their plan but we didn't get it. Sometimes, we are just wrong. LOL ! Then we get our clown make up and laugh on twitter. There latest Clue came at the end of the Permission to Dance Concert last week in VEGAS. The words, "We are Bulletproof" came up on the big screen, followed by the BTS logo. Then the date 06/10/22 came up on the screen. ARMY went WILD!!!!! The Bulletproof clue was from their first album and BTS/Bangtan Sonyeondan means Bulletproof Boyscouts in Korean. 06/10/13 was the release date of the Original Album. I would bet Big Money, they are telling ARMY they are taking us back in time, to the beginning & releasing a new album on 06/10/22. We're thinking more hip hop. I've gotta admit; They make it interesting for us.

They actually do have "lead singers" - although song by song it's not about who sings the most. Jungkook (purple mic) is the main vocalist, in the center of most ensemble pieces. His voice is generally regarded as the most stable & a lot of songs come back to him again and again for repeated chorus or prechorus sections. He's also incredibly adaptable (there are a zillion videos of him doing lots of stuff with his voice) and blends really well when he's on harmonies. The other three vocalists all have different colors/tonal qualities and they arrange songs to make use of those qualities while still passing the melody around. And a couple of the rappers sing sometimes as well - especially JHope, which we see here on Spring Day especially. As main vocal, Jungkook actually lays down the vast majority of the harmonies and ad libs on their backing tracks, so whether or not he was singing in that little moment on Save Me, it's probably him on the backing track. The guys are notoriously terrible at lip sync, which is funny because they're good at everything else.

what you pointed about that “me, me, me” was definitely no live singing. they do like to mouth or sing the words (even if its not their part, for example) though. I know tiny desk is usually super raw but bts like to have fuller sounds s, I would say, so you might hear pre-recorded (or usually taken from their studio version) adlibs

7:24 he was just mouthing along to the song man i don't think you need to focus too much on that, the way they perform (in concert they do intense choreography) they're used to using backing tracks for fuller sounds and some background harmonies, however, you can always hear their mic output loud and clear, it's clear when they're singing and when they're not and in this instance, for example, he was just vibing to the save me me me part, none of them normally sing that part of the song

2 years after, maybe no one then will read this comment, not even Peter... But still I have to say it: he felt the humming, melancholic tone in their way to sing Spring day without knowing what is it about, even though he could read the lyrics. That's how powerful the singing is!!!!!! Spring day is, indeed, a gorgeous hopeful and at the same time melancholic and sad song. Me, personally, even though I have never experienced the kind of tragedy we know it is related to, still, this song makes me cry almost every time. It just breaks my heart beautifully... BTS always has the backing track on all their songs because they are a dance heavy group. They are still in great shape, they practice singing on a treadmill so they can control their breathing when they dance while singing. They record the songs with all these adlibs and harmonies for the fullness and work on dance routines for their performances. That’s why they had a lull on the first song “Save Me” where all you heard was backing track because they do heavy choreography at that time. When you get to their mvs or their performance videos, you’ll see why. These men are consummate performers.

I would say with a performance like this, if you really suspect lipsyncing, it's more likely they cut two takes together and weren't able to match the two takes together perfectly this is a common way of doing prerecorded performances in general, def common in south korea. they weren't able to do the tiny desk in person because of the pandemic, which affords them the luxury of being choosey about how it comes out (like doing multiple takes and splicing together the ones they like best). we get the behind the scenes for these, we know they sing them live because we see them do it in the behind but we don't always know how many takes they did lol there are def other pandemic performances where they put two takes together, I think we just don't talk about it because we don't find it unreasonable if they're given the opportunity to put their best foot forward bts are really terrible at lipsyncing, they can't even manage it in their music videos with a director to help them and typically if they don't sing something, they don't try to fake it. they will just not open their mouth and it won't be a secret they aren't singing

Thanks for this reaction and the breakdown! I love how you're pointing out things I never noticed even though I've listened to these songs so many times. Spring Day is widely considered by ARMY as the queen of their discography. I won't go into depth about the meaning behind the song but it hasn't left the Melon Music chart (kinda like Korean Billboard Hot 100) since it's release in early 2017. It's the longest charting song by far! I also agree you should check out their live performance of Your Eyes Tell. I think you'll really enjoy it
