@@Edias85 I think that's "grit" not fry... but I think I'd need Peter to explain the difference between the two. The number of locations I can pinpoint in the "In Hell.." video is approaching the ridiculous. I think one of the hotel rooms was the Holiday Inn by Maple Leaf Gardens.... but not enough to bet money on.

"You Are My Sunshine" in a minor key really hits different what else should I analyze by The Dead South?

I think the way he sings through his teeth adds to the threatening character of it. I love it. I think Black Lung they have all three vocalists take lead at one point, that's always neat. Their big hit is In Hell I'll Be in Good Company which is catchy as all get out but repetitive, grittier vocals from the main guy if you can believe it.

I love love love this version of this song! It actually matches they lyrics. So many people have no idea what the lyrics actually say. It's quiet morbid. I don't like to hear it sung by children or Mom's to babies. This was great! Thank you for sharing your gifts 💜

I've heard this song so many times now and it still gives me goosebumps. If you ever have the chance to see them live, do it! The cello is actually their bass. I think they sometimes use a loop pedal to keep the bassline going while he's playing with the bow. And I just want to add: you have a nice voice to listen to.

i have loved these guys since the first time i heard them. "in hell i'll be in good company" is the mest toe tapping finger snapping song about murder you will ever hear. they are a great bluegrass group but by a lot of theie lyrics you can tell they love to make subtle jabs at the genre. my favorite is banjo odyssey which contains the lyric "I guess she's my cousin But she needs some sweet lovin' anyway" hence the mocking of the genre

My wife works at a psych rehab. She's been there over 20 years. The first person she worked with was a little lady (under 5') who was one of the feistiest, smartest people I've ever met. When she went to a nursing home she named my wife her Person of Medical Responsibility. Earlier in 2023 we lost our little old lady friend. As she lay in her hospital bed dying I sat with her and held her hand. For hours. And I sang this song to her. This version. No relation to me at all, but she became SO important in my life. She was family. This song, I hope, helped ease her and allowed her to let go. She new in the end that she was loved. I miss her so much! To make it harder, within a few months we lost her, our 17 yo teacup pom (my other little old lady), and my wife's aunt who I had been taking to chemo several times a week. I sang this song to Little (my dog) also. It has become my favorite Dead South song.

Hey Peter, nice analysis. One thing stuck out for me, that I don't think I heard you address was the entirely off-tune singing of the first singer (guitar guy) throughout the later three quarters of the tune, I suspect that it was intentional (or semi-intentional) to give the ensemble a raw 'n' rustic effect. Pitchy, oh hell yea. Discordance decorated the entire tune, lending a very fitting tension to the whole affair.

One of the artistic choice he made there is called a vocal cry (common in males while woman were more common to use vocal squeaks) ... the thing about male vocal cry technique is when it's done in a prolonged execution (like with added riffs and runs) it becomes a "Yodelling " technique 🤔 like this example of a Filipino song which utilizes that said technique a lot.... listen the following video... just disregard the graphics ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kc_Dw9G0k_w.html

Talking about the off-screen bass track, I wonder if you're old enough for Pomplamoose's first videos. They filmed as they recorded, so there's video of every layer, but then they mixed it, and then edited the music video to show the layers. (Also, Mumford and Sons is just the four guys. I call their genre popgrass.)

What a fun group! (Tho' I too wish for a bass voice. 😏) The minor key suits this song a lot-the usual bouncy-pop renditions jar on my ears (& I *really* dislike hearing youth groups singing this song). Thanks very much for your eclectic taste & the wide range of styles you react to, & for sharing your knowledge & enthusiasm about music! On a different subject, I'm wondering if that "vocal flip into head voice" you pointed out by the lower-voiced singer can be the basis of yodeling? I don't know how yodeling works but it sounds possible to me.... 🤓

'You are my Sunshine' is such an old folksy song from the 30s; and even though nowadays it's considered more like a children's song or lullaby even, this shift in tone is really more fitting since it's about and unrequited love. The lover left the singer for someone else, even after the lover said they would 'love them forever' lying - and the singer can't get over it, so much so that it's almost haunting him. Both the Jimmie Davis and Rice Brothers Gang versions made in the 40s are both still upbeat to contrast that hurt. John Cash's version while it's not as dark as Dead South's version, it is more in the lamenting area of feels at least.

I found a Dimash duet you might like. The note from the video is "Incredible Dimash Kudaibergen & Sundet Baigozhin, Tu vas me détruire/Notre Dame de Paris. Kazakh golden voices." I think you might like to react to this Sundet is an opera bass with Dimash as tenor. read somewhere that the performance was at some kind of Opera competition they were not part of the contest but guest singers. I enjoyed them a lot hope you do too. Looking forward to your reactions and comments. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8EVQNzxu43U.html

Peter, the Dead south rules!!! Do listen to more of theirs, such as 'In Hell I'll be in Good Company' and 'Banjo Odyssey'. I especially enjoyed this reaction. I am a zero when it comes to music, and you said a few terms I have heard before but don't totally know the definition of. I will look those up and try to get a little smarter!
