ahem not to bash on you for saying something incorrect or diminish Geoff's performance ability with the 2 octave slide... but you should know that actualy Geoff has said he considers himself not a bass but a baritone extended with a bass range so when you say jumping up is hard for a bass or being confortable low...might wanna rethink it .

@@galadballcrusher8182 Just because Geoff has mad skills to match his mad range does not make it any less impressive. I sing bass, and that F4 is just barely in my falsetto range. Geoff's low-end range makes him a Bass, I'd even call him a Basso Profundo. I mean have you heard how smooth his low notes are? If anything, how easy Geoff makes it look makes his absolute mastery of his voice even more evident.

VoicePlay arrangements (mostly Layne & Geoff) are exceptional, they pay so much attention to all details! And I love that you catch them! 🔥💗 Another thing I noticed is when one of them starts a sentence as lead, and another person finishes it, the transitions are terrific (like Cesar and Eli at the beginning, or Eli and Jose later on). Of course Geoff and Layne kill it!! they work together to perfection!! 🤯💖. I love VoicePlay so much!! 💖, and I really enjoy your analysis, thanks, Peter!

My favorite thing about Cesar is how fully he COMMITS to the bit. They are all great pantomime actors, and in a very short time with them on screen, Cesar has thrown himself into each part fully. Even when the acting choice calls for something understated that doesn't pull attention to him (like the Metallica cover). Not that this one is particularly understated, but it's nothing like the bubbly joy we see from him in more pop-y tracks they do.

Always love the analyses. Something I don't recall seeing is watching the video in full and then going back and step by step analyze it. I don't mind the pausing but i do hear a lot people doing this kind of content talk about it here and there. Wonder if that would be a happy medium. But honestly I prefer seeing people being genuinely themselves. There's enough cookie cutter content out there as is. 😎

This is my favorite song of VoicePlay and your reaction to it did it wonderful justice! I have learned so much by watching music video reactions - one thing is that while my ear naturally tends to want to follow the lead, I need to try to separate the parts out in my head to see where everyone else is going. Prime example is where Geoff did the two octave jump (perfectly). Not sure if I really caught or appreciated that the other 1,000 times I must have listened to this song! I have a question for you, however. You mentioned early in the reaction that you weren't generally a fan of the vocal "slides". Might I ask why? Matt Sallee, who is the new bass for PTX, is ( in my opinion) a MASTER at bass slides! He does them so effortlessly and perfectly - better than probably any other bass I've heard. A perfect example of what I am talking about is Matt's bass slide at about minute 2:40 in the PTX cover of "Shallow". If you have time to answer, I'm just curious! Thanks!
@PeterBarber
@PeterBarber 3 года назад
Totally depends on where the slides are! Generally when I don't like them, it's when the lead melody slides around too much. I think it's a useful technique, especially when used to convey a certain emotion, but only when used sparingly -- if you do anything too much, it kind of takes the value out of it
@ladykilgore2337
@ladykilgore2337 3 года назад
I can't accurately speak to Peter's reason, but it might have to do with him being a classical opera singer? As a classically trained vocalist myself, I don't particularly care for an abundance of sliding either. Sliding, particularly gratuitous sliding, is more a facet of pop or especially country music and sounds more...informal, I guess? It is also sometimes (not always, of course) used to cover over inconsistent, sloppy or lazy vocals. Either that, or it's a stylistic choice to add some interest or contrast but, again, too much and it starts to sound sloppy or breaks genre into country-sounding. I actually agree with Peter that Geoff tends to slide a bit too much for my taste, especially in his solo work. Now, I'm not trying to criticize Geoff, and we all know that he is definitely neither lazy nor inconsistent in his singing. He has amazing technique, so it's most definitely a stylistic choice. When he's singing a cover of a country song, the sliding really serves him. When he covers other genres, however, it kinda sounds like he's doing a slight country-ish version of them, which I don't think he's necessarily going for at times. Again, I LOVE Geoff's voice and his work. This is just my take and it's really just a matter of personal preference. And again, Peter's reason may be completely different. I just thought I'd lend one perspective on it. :)

So here is my question. That section where everyone gets their own solo, wouldn't that be called a fugue? They do the same thing in Don't Stop Believing a Journey cover.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. There is no one I would rather go to to watch reactions from. Peter is just able to level with the audience in enjoying the music, while still being able to be critical, while still being nice to the singers and avoiding hate from the fanbase. He's a beautiful man (with quite a low, beautiful voice himself). Thank you Peter Barber for teaching me music theory and also being good at reacting to things.

Fantastic reaction. Have you reacted to VoicePlay’s Little Mermaid Medley? Geoff is amazing as Ursula. Can you also react to VoicePlay’s warriors (imagine Dragons) too please xx

I thought this was one of their best covers. Well, until I heard The Dragonborn Comes. 😁😁 I just enjoy listening to Voiceplay. And love their videos.

I'll tell ya, my young brother-I always find your technical analyses of these videos so very educational. Thank you! But I can't take you seriously in that mask, srsly... o.O

You should react to Lauren Paley, Malinda, b Bobby, and Colm McGuiness doing Hoist. Their version is so incredibly haunting. Lauren at the top creates some amazing dissonance. So good!

The Major 3rd in F minor Geoff did in that one section was definitely different... this is normally only common in Blues music; although, it's used in Jazz sometimes, too. Very interesting choice. It's not something you see in Aeolian minor, though. I use it quite often with the pentatonic minor scale. It's nearly like they were trying to superimpose a harmonic minor transition over the Aeolian minor key.

Peter. The mini solo's as you describe are referred as counterpoint. (Overarching solo in their own tune and rhythmic registers this makes the harmony sound complex. This style of lyrics is far more frequent in the musicals Hamilton, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.)

Nice analysis! The only caveat I would add is that usually counterpoint happens simultaneously, whereas the singers here seemed to be doing more of a call-and-response between lines (Eli would call and the two other tenors would respond)

I was an idiot and wore my cheap crappy headphones while watching this react. I'm smarter than this. Oh well, I guess I need to watch it again after I swap out my headphones to my much better ones. Headphone quality counts when listening to VoicePlay.

First, I enjoy you musical analysis. It’s interesting. Second, really, Eli’s name is pronounced L-E, not ee-lie. Short for Eliezer

Lately, when I end up in a bassy stretch of The Algorithm, my mind wanders to Colm McGuinness. Be it his Hoist the Colours, or My Mother Told Me in the Old Norse. Mesmerizing. Would be awesome to experience your take on something of his.
