➡️ Long before I knew about Faith No More, my friends turned me on to Mr. Bungle and I had never heard anything like it...ever. It was super interesting when I later heard "Epic" and heard Mike Patton over a more mainstream rock sound. Today, I'm stepping out to discover more of this band with your requests for "King For A Day" featuring the silky grooves of bassist Billy Gould. In this video I talk about his "sticky" (perfect!) bass tone, the music theory behind the chord progression's twists and turns, a breakdown of his tasty bass fills and phrasing, the subtle layers of melodic tension that develop throughout the song, and much more.

In my fifty years on this planet, this is one of the few rare albums that I consider truly overlooked and underrated. Don't misunderstand, those that know know, but this album should be spoken about with reverence... it's that good...

@@scramblesish That is absolutely one of the most relatable things I've ever read in one of these comments...I adored my CD collection. I loved flipping through the racks of CD's at the mom & pop music store, looking for something unusual (its how I found Tool's Opiate ep literally two weeks after it was released...thirty years later, still a Tool fanatic). You are 100% correct, the internet has killed all of that...

@@billyfuckenbobnot amongst the new generation or listeners. Those who know and appreciate this band get it, but when I saw this band headline a festival a few years back, many people started leaving. Bill Gould is the primary song writer for Faith No More. Fantastic and under-rated bass player and song writer. FNM is in my top 3 favorite bands of all time. Every album is great including their early stuff with Chuck Mosley as well as the latest album. Their latest album does lack some of the whiplash I felt from one song to the next on all the previous albums. King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime is almost as great as Angle Dust was.

I think the Real Thing is equal to Angel Dust, but King For a Day and Album of the Year have a ton of great songs. I mean, I think the entire King for A Day album is great, I just like Angel Dust and The Real Thing better. The Real Thing has a few epic songs that no other album has IMO. You are also right about the Chuck Mosley years. I love a number of those songs. I love his version of As the Worm Turns and We Care a Lot

I have pretty diverse tastes in music but these guys have been probably my favorite group for most of my (long) life. It's pretty cool how even though you're mostly focusing on the bass performance, your breakdown of the musicality of it adds so much to the whole composition.

The song is in E minor, they use the chords from the E harmonic minor scale, the very common chord choice for the chorus is the dominant chord of that scale, that is B major with step embellishment, that is long B chord, short A and C chords coming back to long B chord. Also going back and forth between E minor, C major and also G major chords that are 3rd substitution chords of the tonic E minor chord. Chords 3rd apart, share 2 notes and often are substituted or used together. They also blend a few gypsy scales in the bridge for a different taste.

I was jamming with a couple of guys back in the late 90s and this was one of the tunes we played. Up until then I was only familiar with one or two hits from FNM and the guitar player introduced me to them with needing to learn several tracks from this album. Was the most fun I ever had playing bass as a teenager at the time! King for a Day definitely turned me on to checking out all their other stuff they had put out at the time. Great band! Saw them live in Vancouver for the Sol Invictus tour and was one of the best shows I've seen.

I've got a little Mike Patton story. My brother went to Lehigh University and was a dj on the university radio station. He did an alternative show with his roommate. His roommate went to school with Mike Patton. One night after they finished the radio show a limo pulled up and out jumped Mike Patton . He invited them to drive to New York city to buy some spiderman underoos underwear to wear in a show the next night. My brother had never heard of them and couldnt go because he had an exam in the morning. A few months later they releases Epic and Faith blew up. He kicked himself for not going for the adventure.

I always thought the lyrics to this song were inspired by the death of River Phoenix. Hence, the happier tone in the beginning as the narrator enters a cool-kids party and is introduced to a dealer, the heavy middle when the drugs hit ("look everything's spinning, you're on the ground"), and the spookier tonality at the end as the narrator dies ("don't let me die with this silly look in my eyes").

I’ve done a bit of binge watching on your reactions, next step some of your tutorials! Liked and Subscribed 🤘🏻 I wonder if you’ve heard of a band called The Warning? They started out in 2014 covering Enter Sandman aged 9, 12 and 14 - it went viral and now has had 25 million views. Their Bass player is the youngest, she’s a Spector artist and has been since she was 13. She’s also a classical trained Pianist along with her two sisters (the other 2 band members). I think you might like some of what she does. There are two great performances I could recommend, both at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX; Animosity and Hunter; but there’s lots of great performances from that same concert!

i always read how underrated FNM and esp. Bordin oder Gould are. A lot of Bands already admitted how influencial and ahead of their time FNM were. Metallica were big fans of FNM and played together with Bordin. Flea said that Goulds play was a major influence to him. FNM were on of the most important Bands of the early 90s. they created a new sound. I dont think they are really underrated. They are admired in the whole Metal community for being phenomal musicians and one of the best live bands ever to exist.

One of the best bands ever. If you’re gonna do another, avoid the more mainstream ones like ‘Epic’ or ‘the real thing’. Try anything from the album Angel dust which is their best album overall but I would probably do ‘the gentle art of making enemies’ from King for a day. One of their more straightforward (kind of) songs, Jizzlober’ if you’re feeling adventurous or ‘stripsearch’ if you just want total bass line heaven.

One of the most diverse rock bands of all time, especially after Patton joined. Whenever an album came out, you had no clue what you are going to get... but it all sounded incredible. They aren't unknown, but definitely underrated. Large part of that comes down to Kiedis trying to sabotage Pattons career on every step. Sad that one jealous cokehead had so much influence. He could never come remotely close to Patton, in any department... even got beat at his own game with Epic

Never listened to this band besides Epic. You missed out. Billy is an awesome bass player. Your reaction to the changes, typical FNM.
