GUYS I've never had a comment section go off like this, and I'm religious about trying to reply to everyone. THANK YOU and I feel all the love, and the love for MISA and BAND-MAID! I'll try to get back to you all ASAP, but I can't wait to listen to more of this band!
She seamlessly curls it under her index finger. She is literally one of the best going today. Paz from the Pixies is her idol. Also...she plays Black Cloud. You wanna see them live? May...Houston, Austin, Daytona(Rockville Fest.), Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Detroit, Columbus Oh(Festival), St Louis(Festival). More dates in August yet to be announced. Edit- performing at Lollapalooza August
@@johnmagill7714 If you are a paying fan-club member, she have a video, showing how she curls it under her index finger, and how she just puts the thumb behind it again to start picking again, not between thumb and forefinger.
Was about to comment the same. From my perspective it looks like the same techinque I I use on guitar when playing Jazz for example when I need to transition from using the thumb for chords and the pick for melody or solo. Never tried using that on bass yet but was always wondering if there was an application for it.
Index finger and forefinger means the same thing. The photo was probably taken at the point where she was moving it back into picking position. So everyone is right. Diplomacy: 100.
MISA IS the "Slide Queen" and will wear out a fretboard every song You can really see how MISA changes from pick to slap here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mVrN-j_Uc0U.html Kanami (lead guitarists) is the songwriter but after she gives the song to the girls they put their own spin and technique on their parts. They then all collaborate and create the final version. Band-Maid is a true all-for-one and one-for-all group, a recipe that has kept them together for 10 years now, and they just keep getting better. Stay with them and you will be WOW'd!
The change is at 2:33 of the video. It's well lit and close up and you pretty much still can't see it very well. Misa said a while back that she hadn't dropped a pick in two years.
@@TehPhysics Hmm🤔 of course they do. Stealthy assassins aren't usually noted for rushing you head on shouting "I'm going to kill you now". Plus i can't even get irked at you anymore cos your emojis are just too kawaii :)
I'm surprised Your here considering Mincho was NOT the focus, I guess Talent Will Out. Not saying Mincho doesn't deserve as much praise but it's good to see MISA getting the focus every now and then.
BAND-MAID is a band that is fun to listen to, with arrangements that are not bound by any genre and that will never bore you. And since there are many songs in which the bass guitar stands out, we encourage you to listen to a variety of their songs.
The more you get into Band Maid the more you'll appreciate how good they really are and how many genres they cross through. The Maidiacs call Misa The Barefoot Assassin. She plays barefoot on stage and drinks while she's playing although she's slowed down on that. Pick any song to watch because they're all good and all different. Best rock band on the planet.
@@LowEndUniversity Misa has said she kicks off her shoes when playing in concert to better feel Akane's drumbeats and use them for her own timing. About her drinking: Early on, she had stage fright and would have a drink before a concert. Then through a series of circumstances it became a public "hell yeah I drink" thing. Watch the Gold Rush interviews on RU-vid. They were each being asked their cafe-Maid "charm points." Akane claimed a bottomless appetite, 30 bowls of ramen in a sitting - a very UN-kawaii thing. With the faintest smirk. Misa deadpanned, "I drink." Pushing the un-kawaii thing even further. She was asked what her favorite drink is. Whiskey, on the rocks or straight. The questioner was impressed. Not long after, at a concert in Germany, she came out and found a bottle of imported Jim Beam honey whiskey on her amp. Everyone was watching. She opened it, chugged a good amount and re-capped it and slung on her bass. They loved it. It became part of her onstage persona. Part of the Band-Maid story. She has a drink on her amp every time, but these days it's more often beer. I think it was last year that she had a bottle of whiskey and was opening it when a fan standing at the front jokingly asked for some. She stepped forward, told him to open his mouth wide, and very accurately poured a shot in from a few inches above. Awesome moment. Now THAT is an honor.
@@LowEndUniversity they are coming to the US in May and August. May dates are announced and tickets are on sale. August dates are yet to be announced. Definitely recommend seeing them live if you can. Awesome review man.
Band Maid are one of the few bands that have a bass solo in practically every song. Lots of live video exists in YT as does a Japanese interview where MISA explains how she does the magic trick of hiding her pic. Glad you found them., They really are well worth a deep look as they have such a library of songs. They also have so many songs that will 'stick in your head'.
It's always so much fun witnessing the birth of a brand new Maidiac! Believe it or not, that's just the tip of the huge iceberg of musical greatness from these ladies and the more you hear from them and get to know them, the more you'll love 'em! Some suggestions: Play, Domination, Onset(instrumental), Dice/Different -all Live, because that's when they really shine! (Best MV's: Blooming, From Now On (instrumental), Secret My Lips) Thanks!🤘🤩🤘
MISA is a crazy excellent bass player, she's very prominent in most BAND-MAID songs. For another live featuring MISA try "Play" live from their channel.
MISA's bass is from Black Cloud. They are located in Nagoya Japan and was a two men custom shop until short time ago - may have expanded. They make crazy good instruments. The yellow bass in the video is Black Cloud Black Smoker TRAD MASTER SERIES BETA J5 (customized with a distressed look).
Love the bass player. She plays any style you can think of. I've seen her play finger, pick, tap and slap, and she's great with any of them. I've seen the drummer described as "beating on those things like they owe her money." A really really good metal band.
I found Band Maid while doing reactions as well. They are incredible musicians and Misa is one of the best bassists of the modern era. Another great surprise out of Japan is Gacharic Spin and their blend of metal/jazz/electronic with predominantly slap bass. The best bassists in the world are currently coming out of Japan along with those who have been influenced by the Japanese metal scene in my opinion. As a used-to-was bassist myself I have to say you're talented as well to find notes and licks so quickly. Keep the Bass alive in modern music!
Had the pleasure of seeing them last year in New Jersey and they are amazing. Not only are they exceptional musicians, but they are hilarious between sets.
You should definitely dig in more to Band Maid. They’ve been around a decade and have a massive catalog of fantastic music. They’re touring the states this year, and they are a blast live, they usually play solo gigs where they just kick ass for 2+ hours.
Also, not sure if its been posted but Band-Maid will be on tour in the US in May playing solo in Houston, Austin, then Rockville in Daytona, then solo in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Detroit, Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, OH, Pointfest in St. Louis and just announced Lollapalloza in Chicago with potentially more US dates in August. Tickets are on sale for all except Chicago currently. If you're anywhere near any of those cities I HIGHLY recommend going to see them live. You will not be disappointed.
MISA, MISA, MISA. Plays so nice, we name her thrice. Our "Barefoot Assassin" usually performs without shoes so that A) she's not so much taller than the other members of the band, and B) so that she can feel the pulse of the bass drum through the stage. I've never had a "favorite bassist" before, but MISA taught me the error of my ways. MISA plays on Black Cloud basses though Orange amps. I recently heard a rumour that she's switched amps, but I haven't tracked that down. She typically plays with a pick. Both she and lead guitarist Kanami use a lot of slides in their playing. When she switches to slap-style, she tucks the pick into the middle knuckle of her index finger. As someone else noted, you can see the swap very clearly in her Onset (live instrumental) solo on the Band Maid RU-vid channel. Rather than having a genre, Band Maid has a sound. I've listened to just about everything they've ever produced. If your music playlist consisted of just the Band Maid catalog, you'd never get bored and never get a bad song. Aside from Onset, I strongly suggest the Manners/Black Hole video from the same online concert that No God was taken from. Her bass is really groovy and cuts through the mix very well.
"It's gonna be stuck in my head all day now." Welcome to BAND-MAID! All their songs are gonna get stuck in your head. And side note, you can use the *coma* key, and the *period* key to reverse and advance frame by frame. Might make things easier to exam in the future.
Ha! It was ABSOLUTELY stuck in my head for a day or two after filming this. I DID know that, as I said in other comments, I just got excited and caught up in the moment and completely forgot 😅
I gotta love it when a true musician picks apart a Band-Maid song. This one is a tasty Bass analysis. You totally got wowed by her too. Hey guys, this one starts outright in Camp MISA! I'm sure he'll get to the rest of the camps in due time, but this is really an interesting starting point on an interesting song. Looking forward to hearing more from this channel.
I sure did, I just couldn't believe the nuance of the slap bass parts WHILE holding a pick. I can't even fake it - it's a specific skill she's honed, and I have a lot of respect for stuff like that. Appreciate the kind words, and thanks for stopping by, Rahim!

if you look up "MISA's Interview (partial) and Hybrid picking demo in the Bass day" you will see an interview with her as she demonstrates what she does
Thanks for this expert's perspectives on my favorite bass player. If you want to get more insights into this hard-working rockstar, I recommend going to see Band-Maid live and get yourself in front of Misa - I can tell you first-hand (no pun intended) it'll be worth the effort.
Thanks for that, Jonathan. I hope I can see them soon. Someone here in the comments mentioned they're coming near my area in a few months. Going to do my best to make the show if life allows!
Thank you for reacting to Band-Maid and MISA. MISA is a very versatile bass player, she master finger style, picking, slapping and sliding at a very high level. Found Band-Maid two years ago and they immediately became my new favorite band of all times, tipping Dream Theater off the top spot. I'm a bass player and MISA has become my new source of inspiration.
If you want to see Misa switch from picking to slapping, watch Band-Maid's song Onset(official live version) & see her solo at around the 2:24 mark of the video(she tucks the pick under her finger & begins to slap). Totally Love Band-Maid!
The amazing thing about Band Maid is that each individual is at the top of their game. Akane the drummer is held to be one of the best in the business, Misa as you have seen is super talented and Kanami the lead guitar and composer is a genius. Singers Saiki and Miku work together brilliantly. All in all a mega band full of talent off the scale.
Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. One of the seven wonders of Band-Maid is Misa's bass playing. It clearly stands out but never disturbs the song Saiki and Miku are singing. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands (including BABYMETAL you mentioned). They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄
Really enjoyed this. The more you listen to this band, the more blown away you're going to get. They have everything - phenomenal songwriting and arranging (so tightly intertwined that it often takes 50 listens to hear half of what's happening), yet somehow accessible to the masses due to the catchy hooks mixed in with the proggy hard rock. This has been, by far, my favorite band since I discovered them 3.5 years ago. Recommend you keep checking them out. You'll see her pick tuck best in the official live of their instrumental Onset, but everything they do is incredible - even though stylistically they are all over the map. For bass, you'll find that most of their songs have really interesting bass stuff in them. I'll let others make recommendations but they are all correct, because this band is THAT good. And as a bonus they'll leave you grinning like a fool! And yes, you need to see them live - they're coming to the US in May for some shows, and just an hour or so ago announced an appearance in my neck of the woods at Lollapallooza Chicago!! I'm still on cloud 9 about that. So excuse me while I say YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Kevin! I'm starting to see that. So many passionate folks here with recommendations. I can't wait to dive in and check out more. Many have commented their dates here, and I think Houston might be doable for me, if life allows!
It’s great to have a bassist reacting to and analyzing BAND-MAID’s music. Each song has a different sound. I would be interested in your reaction to WONDERLAND and PLAY (official live pre-pandemic videos).
Thanks for that, Greg! I can't wait to check out more. I DID check out "Play", and the bass work was like gymnastics right off the bat. So many folks have recommended songs here in the comments, and I'm making a list to check out in the coming weeks!
Besides picking and slapping, she can also play fingerstyle. My favorite MISA video is Manners/Black Hole (live), they have her high up in the mix so you can hear her well and she lays down some incredible bass lines. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iaf94nNSRGE.html
What an interesting reaction. Welcome to the world of Band-Maid. Great to have a proficient bass play here with us. Hope to see more Band-Maid in the future !
The B on Misa's bass stands for Black Cloud. She has about four guitars by them. The pick stays in her index finger when she slaps- so quick. If there is a better rhythm section- show me!
thanks to the RU-vid algorithm, it got me to watch your video. I like to watch musicians reaction to some "foreign" song/band because I could get some surprises also new knowledge or insight about the song/band. thank you for sharing yours in this video. as some wrote here, welcome to the BAND-MAID rabbit hole, LoL. AFAIK, this band is quite unique because it seems in every song they write, they keep putting a spotlight on every member to shine; although in one of the interviews, they prefer to call it competing with each other to get the spotlight from their audiences. related to MISA, you might find people talking about so much great stuff about her, from bass to booze, LoL. that pick stuff also her kind of magic, she has shown it in an interview back then the way she holds the pick with her index finger when changing to slap the bass. if you want to go deep down into these maids' rabbit hole, you could just pick each video from their official RU-vid channel [ www.youtube.com/@BANDMAID/videos ], and you'll be keeping blown away each time. as some of the suggestions stated here in the comment section, you could go with: - onset (live) | ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mVrN-j_Uc0U.html - Domination (live) | ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QbyQCJn6rYg.html - Dice (MV) | ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpAYnVJX9CY.html *PS: watching some fancams or video reactions and comments from BAND-MAID's latest tour in the USA, it seems the fans and audiences have grown up quickly there. so you definitely need to start monitoring their news for their upcoming tour [ bandmaid.tokyo/contents/617485 ]. they will be back in the USA this May 2023, better go check for the tickets then!
Thank you so much, and I'm glad RU-vid led you here. Appreciate you commenting and stopping by. They are certainly great at showcasing every band member in a musical way, which is why I'm so impressed. I can't wait to check out more. Cheers! I will check these links out ASAP!
New subscriber here. I'm starting to learn to play the bass and Band-Maid are my favourite band (as great technicians as they are, it's the song-writing that sets them apart for me). I enjoyed your down-to-earth insights.
Really appreciate that, and thank you SO MUCH for subscribing. Best of luck learning the bass, it's going to be an awesome journey. Talk soon! Thanks for stopping by!
I been listening to this band since 2016, super excited to finally see them live in August. As an amateur bassist MISA is truly an inspiration, def one of my favorite bassists currently.
Oh and welcome to band maid they have so many good songs and they always give misa at least a small little spot in like every song to stand out. She's amazing as they all are
Thanks, Mark, some excellent observations there. You're so right about the importance of inserting good bass composition into open spaces, and MISA is an absolute master of this -- her writing makes Band-Maid songs pop out in 3D. Of the videos on the official Band-Maid channel, the one that shows the pick/slap sleight of hand the best is the song Onset. BTW, you are always safe when reacting to videos from the official channel. There are other non-official videos on YT that are also excellent showcases of MISA's work, but you might risk getting dinged.
Appreciate that, Phil! MISA does a masterful job of technicality and musicality in this song, and I can't wait to check out more in the coming weeks. So many folks have recommended "Onset" and I can't wait to specifically check that one out. Appreciate you!!
Her perfection didn't come cheap. In an interview a few years ago she complained about her need for sleep. Said it interfered with her progress on the bass. That's some serious dedication.
I don't recall that interview... 🤔. I DO recall an interview early on when she first started to do serious slapping, that she practiced the slap part of the song ("Order" IIRC) till her fingers literally bleed... all the other members were seriously concerned for her zealous commitment. 😂
@@LowEndUniversity oh yeah dude, MISA is the real deal! Seriously one of the best modern bassists in the world. She will try to downplay this though because, you know, Japanese humility & all... 😆. In other words she has zero ego & is actually quite shy IRL. She is a MONSTER though when she gets her bass in hand on stage!
I fell for this group about 2 years ago and especially MISA. Could not believe they were real but enjoyed the show. Then last year saw them live in Houston then about a week later in New York. They are the real thing. These girls are incredible musicians and very generous to their fans. Joined the fan club to gain access to individual performances like the one of MISA mentioned in the comments as well as the Christmas acoustic show and concert performances early VIP access to tickets and merch.
Yes, MISA is really prominent in almost every Band-Maid song, with having solo parts in quite a lot of them. Another incredibly good japanese bass player you might want to listen to is Miyu Yoshinaka from the band ASTERISM. He's still just 21 yo, but already leagues ahead of many others you know. Also plays a 7-string bass regularly. Thanks 🤘🏻🙂
tbh, you can pick any Band-Maid song and will immediately hear the fantastic bass lines. What I would like to suggest is NEMOPHILA's new song RISE. Now... that Bass riff(s)? on that track... I can't get it out of my head.
I would be interested in hearing your reaction to the double live feature Manners/Blackhole, both are very bass heavy. Misa goes groovy in Manners, normally when she is groovy she plays fingerstyle but in Manners she sticks with a pick and then in Blackhole.... well it's best to not spoil the impact, lets just say they all dial it up a tad.
These girls are the coolest rock band in existence right now. I guarantee that the more you listen to them the more you'll find to love. My *least* favorite BAND-MAID songs still get heavy rotation and I've been listening to them for eight years.
To really see Misa close up, check out ''At the Drop of a Hat'' from their acoustic session. Magical bassline melodies. Also ''Dice'' official live video where sh plays her blak 5 string. Two very contrasting performances highlighting her versatility.
14:18 the orange cab had been part of her rig for many years. she recently switched to aguilar. btw, her bass is by black cloud, a custom shop based in japan. the maids will return to mainland us this spring/summer. lucky you.
Thanks Craig, both brands are great, and Aguilar will serve her well. Others in the comments did mention they are coming near me, and I'll do my best to make a show ASAP!
Oh, MISA will ALWAYS find all the space in the song and fill it with some phat, juicy, tasty bass lick. Probably comes from her days playing bass+rhythm guitar while the rhythm guitarist and band founder was training up. Any BAND MAID you listen to, especially live, will have MISA constantly providing bassy goodness. If you wanna pick something very much oriented around bass and with more groove, do Manners/Black Hole live, it's two songs in one video, the first one is groove all the way, the second one is the best composed chaos you'll ever hear.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Band Maid ! Misa is our hero! She is quiet and reserved but she is a killer bass player !! Onset live MV would give you a better look at the change also she has a double solo in 'Influencer' MV
Welcome to the fandom! Ahh recognize that 'WTF this bish doin'?' look anywhere 😉 In my non-professional opinion, MISA is the best bassist I've ever heard! ♥ Band Maid!
Welcome to the maids! I enjoyed your commentary. MISA is definitely a bassist to watch. Rather than add a lot more chatter, I'll just slip you a technique to use in the future to avoid all the jerky stopping and starting when trying to catch something. When the video is paused, you can advance (or reverse) it frame by frame with the period and comma keys.
To my ears, Misa-sama is the closest you will find to how John Entwistle would play within a Who song... She creates her own part inside of what Kanami composes. How she remembers what she does in a studio is pretty remarkable.
@@LowEndUniversity If you want to hear even better riffs from Misa-sama, check out "Play" live, and the "Manners and Black Hole" dual song live videos.
They've just done a US tour like 2 month ago - I think they are going back for a few events too soon- assuming your in america. p.s Band maid are incredible - they are all great musicians especially misa and their drummer. Most of their songs feature the bass quite prominently. p.p.s If you check out their instrumental 'Onset' (the official live version) thats about the best look at Misa hiding the pick that i know of. Or check out one of their newest tracks - also an instrumental 'from now on' to see some of their musical skills on display :)
MISA! MISA! MISA! Holding the line in solid Guitar Rock, Band Maid has picked up the Mantle of Rock'n'Roll where much of the West has left it behind! More Band Maid Always!! Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!
Misa plays one of several custom 5 strings by Black Cloud. She has a couple of other brands. She played G&L, was using a Fender Precision bass supporting "Becky" in 2012 (a year before Band-Maid) and was using a Fender Jazz Bass in her early days with Band-Maid. She also has an Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray somewhere in there too. She is on her Black Cloud 5 strings consistently now AFAIK. She does slip the pick between her fingers while picking and slapping, super smoothly. How? She practiced this and everything else she does obsessively to get it to this level. Early on, she developed bleeding blisters while intensely practicing slap technique. Then got a call, "We got some studio time, come on." So... she went and did it anyway. Perfectly of course. A ninja assassin does not make excuses. Misa really is that badass. Yes, her amps are all by Orange. She loved the sound she could get from them from her first try, and so do we. BTW, in live concerts she typically kicks off shoes and plays in stocking feet so she can feel Akane's drumbeats more immediately and keep her timing on point. She is the one who doesn't use a click track for that. Misa and Akane were friends from music school and often played support roles in club work, and jazz clubs were major part of that. Tal Wilkenfeld is one of the players she admires. The EVH 5150 is Miku's. She plays Zemaitis guitars since mid 2016, not just for the looks but she loves their playability. Her first two guitars were Rickenbacker. Kanami uses a Mesa Boogie head unit. As Miku's guitar sensei, she probably recommended the 5150 as best for her. Kanami is a fan of EVH and Carlos Santana, and noticed the latter playing PRS so she looked into them and started using them even though she had a signature Addictone line. And seems quite happy with them. She got her first PRS in late 2016.
MISA has reminded me of various renowned players. I don't remember what song it was but just the other day I thought 'OMG, she sounded like Jeff Berlin (RiP) just there' Cheers!
The only thing better than band maid, and that's watching someone discover Band maid. You nailed it in "fun" these are the most joyful musicians I've ever seen. Love the Maids.
Her technique of transitioning between slap and picking is done by pulling the pick back with her index finger against the top end of her palm near the base of her thumb, and for returning to picking, she pulls her thumb back so it’s behind the pick and in one motion she pulls her index finger and thumb away from her palm which brings the pick back to playing position. It’s surprisingly easy to do once you manage to do it once, it becomes muscle memory pretty quickly. The reason MISA is impressive when she does it is because of the speed of the transition and that she doesn’t drop the pick, ever. Just note that tucking the pick is really easy, but the transition back to picking is the hard part because you can drop the pick mid-transition and because it’s very hard to return the pick to a comfortable picking position immediately. The rumor is she’s never dropped a pick during this transition from slap/pick. Edit: after reading some comments, I grabbed a pick and tried the motion of hiding/bringing back the pick and I realized my explanation was off, so I corrected it above
Thank you for responding to BAND-MAID's songs, comments from professional musicians like you are very helpful and fun. I'm happy to shine a light on Mass, but please be surprised by the talent of the other members. I recommend the live version of "ON SET" and "From Now On" and "WITHOUT HOLDING BACK".
Thank you so much for the nice words. I certainly acknowledge the talent of them all, but wanted to give the spotlight to Misa, as this is a bass-focused channel. I look forward to listening to more Band-Maid!
If, if you want to listen to more MISA, try "Influencer" "Domination live at Shibuya" "Dice (my 2nd fav Band Maid song)" "Manners (both live and studio), "all their instrumental songs" though basically all of their songs have the "MISA" factor in them.
Great stuff, loved the reaction/breakdown. Misa is my favorite bassist right now. I think a great suggestion would be to check out their Manners/Black Hole live video. The first half is super groove oriented. While the later half is quite experimental.
Great review thank you. MISA is sponsored by and uses Black Cloud basses. To see her pick-tuck in close up watch their instrumental "Onset" live from their official channel.
Dude, nice video, amazing song, I'm a professional bassist also and, like you, I am like... I wish I could do that. I've played electric bass since 1983. Her chops are INSANE. VERY cool part too.. and I love the crazy guitar fills that are completely wack atonal stuff
Thanks for the kind words man. Yes, I didn't dive too much into the guitar, but there were some very thoughtful transitions using leads to either add tension or bridge together some of the chromatic riffs they had (which I also didn't mention). It's very thought out and intentional, I love it!
@@LowEndUniversity absolutely. Which reminds me… i need to switch to classical speak now (rehearsing with orchestra in 25 minutes). Have a good one. Thanks for the reply
Thank you! I won't repeat any artists in the near future, but I will for SURE do more Band-Maid soon enough. I hope you'll stick around and check out more.
Welcome aboard, Mark. You are embarking on (along with many others - 170 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular! Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uds7g3M-4lQ.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid Members: Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen! Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!! Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA! Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans. WOW Tom, thank you for all the background and details! Great read! I feel like I've learned so much about the band just from you guys in the comments getting me up to speed. I am close to Texas and hoping I can make a show soon. THANK YOU again for stopping by!
@@LowEndUniversity--------- I don't get how he left out, however, the most important feature of Akane !---------over-hand pitching of banana-skin into unprotected audience ! Deadly accurate.
Loving the bass reactions. Misa and Eugene from Jinjer are my 2 favorite bassists. I especially like how different their playing styles are yet they both contribute so much to their songs. Speaking of different playing styles I would love to see what you think of the former bass player for Unleash the Archers. Their full band play through of “Awakening” is beautifully shot so that you can really see how the musicians are playing. The bass player uses a technique that I had not seen before or since. Thanks in advance. New sub and cheers from West Texas! 😎🤘🏻
Thanks so much Johnny! These are my favorite types of bass players - technical, smart, but they do it all with restraint when needed. I love that the instrument is evolving to more of this lately, and I really applaud the players who do it well. ALSO, I just finished filming a video for "Awakening" - it'll go up later this week! Stay tuned!
If you pause a RU-vid video, you can go frame by frame with the < > keys. Just a tip for the future for when you want to see things that go by real quick.
Band Maid is one of the best hard rock bands playing in the world. Misa, the lead guitarist Kanami and the drummer Akane are extremely talented musicians. Miku is the rhythm guitarist/vocalist and the one who created the band, its concept, is the leader and also writes the lyrics. Kanami writes the music and arranges it, somehow every song she has done is a banger and exactly right to have what any good rock needs to have to be considered good. What you watched was actually a live version from their online concert a couple years ago, yeah they play that good live. They also turned 14 of their rock songs into Acoustic versions for an acoustic live christmas concert, so Misa's bass playing is different as she is accommodating two acoustic guitars and mellower drums and No God is one of the songs, it might be interesting to react to No God Acoustic to see what differences you notice in Misa's bass playing for this. Otherwise, pretty much any song from Band Maid is great. Most have decent Bass parts, some with Misa doing extra like No God, very few just have a basic bass part, though Band Maid is like that, they play exactly what makes the song the best. A new song with Misa being extra is Influencer, released only a few months ago.
I have been a band maid fan for about 6 years, and I remember watching an interview with the band and the interviewer asked Misa how she does the switch between pick and slap and she demonstrated her technique. I was a Japanese interview with subtitles. Maybe another fan with a better memory will be able to tell you the link to the interview. Also, Misa also plays finger style for some songs as well.
Misa plays “ Black Cloud “ basses, a Japanese brand. Your absolutely correct about the pick thing, it’s a very magician slight of hand sort of thing. There is a video out of her doing an equipment run-down sort of interview where she actually shows how she does it, though if anyone can pick it up by just watching it they way better then me.
I'm late to this video, but been a fan of Band Maid for a few years. They are tremendous musicians and MISA is just on a different level. Thanks for taking the time to show case her unique skills.
Methinks thou will become a died in the wool Maidiac like the rest of your commenters soon. I'm 71 and gave up on new music for a long time. I forget even how I tumbled to Band Maid, I think It was Daydreaming vid, and i thought wow what a catchy tune its mostly or all in Japanese but it sounds great. But my mind was then blown for months as I found out holy schnickies they have 7-8 cd's out, they're like ten yrs on.!!! Going through all these songs, waiting waiting waiting for that first song that was a "meh". Still hasn't happened. Even the first two cd's I got, Brand New Maid and New Beginnings, where only one song was written by BM, they absolutely own these" adopted children" . Of course their own compostions are just so good, so layered and more complex, but still love all of it. In summary, they are as accomplished musicians as you will find, they write terrific songs, are better live than recorded, stand out as individuals but are so friggin cohesive as a band, and have FUN FUN FUN their primary secret ingredient
Rather than stop-start, you can drop the play speed to 1/4, which may be more useful? Failing that, you can see exactly how she holds the pick at 2:32 of this video of Domination - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QbyQCJn6rYg.html - but watch it from the start, because... BANDMAID! 😁
I would highly recommend watching this close-up of MISA playing bass in this intsrumental version of NO GOD ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UMeuRAdcaY4.html All you get is MISA and you get a clearer view of her switching from pick to plucking.
