I bought my uke bass a year ago but I could not find a physical teacher to teach me, so it just stayed in a corner of my place. Because I want something "bass" for our seniors uke group, I decided to search the internet for tutorial and found this website. Thank you for your very clear instructions. Funny thing, when I did something right I smile at you, my teacher! By the way I will be 79 this April and to learn play the uke bass is a gift I want to give myself. Hope I can learn something before then to surprise my group. Our group, which performs at nursing homes, plays old ditties loved by the residents (ages ranging from 65 above). Thank you for your teaching. I enjoyed my first lesson.
Such a lovely comment Nona, Thank You so much. I'm always glad to hear how I am helping, but have trally made me smile with your words. Very much appreciated, from your teacher. :-)
Oh my gosh. I adore you. I would have absolutely LOVED you as a music teacher in school. Hell. I'm an adult now and I love you now!! I'm here to learn ukulele and I'm sure hoping you will put together a strong set of lessons.
Fabulous lesson, thank you. Received my very first Ubass today, so excited to start learning. 63 years old, I can play chords on a uke, but always fancied bass. Never too late.❤
You might find this strange, but I looked for almost an hour, and this is the only actual beginner bass ukulele tutorial I found. Thank you for posting this. Now maybe I can learn something now. :-)
I’m new to the bass ukulele I live in SE Idaho. No teachers close so RU-vid university. I have watched many but your teaching method works for me. Just got my ubass. Keep up the good work.
Weeeeeeeee! I’m SO SO happy that you’ve started to post Ubass lessons! Hard to find Ubass specific lessons as opposed to full size bass tutorial. Thank you!!!! Can’t wait to play with my three Ubasses (yes, I’m learning and I already have three - including a gorgeous solid body blue). 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎵😎🎵😎
I was so happy reading your comment Diane, you sound soooooo happy! TBH, I was quite suprised that there weren't more lessons aimed at bass uke rather than just bass guitar. Not something I had originally planned really but as a long time bass teacher, and loving my bass ukes I thought I could be helpful and have fun with my basses. 3!! Fair play, impressive! LOL What blue bass is it? I'm intrigued......
Ukulele Wales There are so few Ubass tutorials! Learning from standard bass can be challenging, especially for positioning techniques - so I am so grateful to see your videos! I got the blue one from AliExpress and she is STUNNING! took a couple of photos and would gladly share them with you ! (How?)
I wished there was more diversity of instruments when i was younger, the recorder quickly killed any interest i had in music at the time. But now i rediscovered it with my wife, i started play the Cavaquinho (the Grand father of the Uke) and now the Bass ukelele. I Wish i had you has a teach back then.
Next time I go to wales with my lovely I want to give you a hug... post Covid of course.....I’ve been playing uke for about 4 years and just ventured forth into bass and harp uke.... thank you so much!
Rachel I have been teaching my wife how to play bass ukulele and couldn’t seem to get her to progress. (I am a music teacher) but my wife was my hardest student to motivate! Then I discovered your site for ubass lessons and she got so excited! Thank you for your great lessons, you have helped my wife get to the next level when I just couldn’t.
Thanks Bill, that's lovely to read. If it helps, I've given up trying to teaching my husband so totally appreciated what you've done to help her. Sure she appreciates it too.
Hi, After learning Ukulele as my first musical instrument 3 years ago at age 60 I really enjoy being able to play and sing many of the songs which shaped my musical tastes. I’ve always fancied having a go at Bass but tried and struggled with conventional Bass Guitar learning resources then gave up. This lesson is EXACTLY what I need and I can already tell your teaching style will allow me to play along with my recently formed beginner Ukulele Group very quickly. So I’ve just won a used Kala U Bass on eBay and can’t wait for it to arrive so I can work through your lessons.
In fact, everything 's said in the comments already, but I feel the necessity to thank you personally. Got a Bass Uke as a gift from a friend, along with an amplifier LANEY Linebacker30. Haven't played any Bass before and was looking for help to get started. You're just, I make it short, a bliss and so talented in teaching beginners, so clear and motivating easy to follow your lessons. Would like to give you a big hug. So glad having found you 😊👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you sooooo much😊.
Hi Rachel--and hello from Australia-- Goodness, I wish I found you when I first picked up a Ubass in my late 60s! You're a fabulous teacher and am now recommending you to uke players who ask me how to go to Bass--you've done al the hard work for me😂
Thank you very much for posting these lessons. I just ordered a Bass ukulele and am already watching your wonderful lessons in anticipation of receiving it.
I have a Ubass. I love it along with my Steel drum from Trinidad 🇹🇹 abd drum loop machine I make a one band singing calypso soca and reggae and jazz standards. Love doing gigs with it. People out there learn the scales.vitally important! Scales and all the different keys.bless.
Thanks Steve, not something I had ever really thought about doing but there does seem to be a bit of a need as I've had quite a few requests! This one is very simple but I will hopefully do a couple more over the next few days.
Taught myself to play guitar 46 years ago and took up playing soprano ukulele about 2 years ago. I never bothered with the theory side in 46 years but now I’ve progressed to a semi acoustic Bass Uke I think it's time I went back to school. I've subscribed and ticket the notification bell, bless you!
I wish I had had such a cool and good teacher when I was at school. Thank you. My new bass will be arriving sometime next week and while I do have a jazz bass (that i can no longer play for health reasons) I've grown to love all things Uke.
50 years playing guitar........ive had a U bass for 5 years and never picked it up ....now I can't put it down. ABSOLUTE WONDERFUL TEACHING thank you... oh and you're wearing a G Shock which increases your cool level 100% :-)

So glad you enjoyed and found it helpful. Thanks for the time stamps, I will go back and add them soon, that feature wan't available when I made the vid. Thanks
Good Heavens, I am *not* one of those bass guitarists who "reads" tab. I loathe tablature for stringed instruments. Thank you for these lessons, I'd l love to play bass uke in my local group.
I picked up a UBass because I have Carpel tunnel syndrome in my left hand. I was finding the Ukulele a bit hard because of this. I love your teaching and am more than happy to subscribe. I feel a bit guilty about not paying for all your excellent work. I would be happy to donate for your good work. From a teacher to a teacher you are good.
Thanks Richard, so glad to be helping and great that you are managing the bass if you are having problems with the uke because of your CTS. Please don't feel guilty, I love making the videos and have great fun doing them and having comments like yours really does make them worth while.
thank you! this is great. Just ordered a bass ukulele. I'm practicing a bit while I wait using my Baritone Ukulele but tuned like a bass (but of course an octave higher). Look forward to going thru your whole tutorial. Bass very different from what I'm used to playing with a standard ukulele just strumming chord! Thanks again!
You are fabulous I love all your content.. thank you!! … and you can never have too many purple Basses 💜💜💜… your reviews helped me decided on my first Bass… got the Kala UBass and I’m already so in love with this beautiful instrument… ✌🏼💜🎶
I just bought my first Ubass. Even though I am no longer young, I find that I can learn something through these excellent lessons. Thank you for building a great series of lessons❤️
Lovely video. I just bought a new Kala U-Bass. I want to create a virtual band so have my normal uke, banjelele uke and now a U-Bass. You teach similarly to how I teach when I am, not currently, took James Hill's certification, have been playing for 11 years now. Your tips on holding the Bass uke is so essential to getting off on the right foot. I haven't even tuned mine yet, it just arrived yesterday and this first video is a great start to me getting started on my 'virtual band'. The reason I'm doing this is to create videos, using multiple tracks to send up to a senior's centre (it's actually a care facility) that I used to play piano and my ukulele (you can't visit them right now so they are missing out). Of course the songs are quite old but I'm familiar with them and your lessons will be invaluable to getting me up to speed quickly. Thank you so much for posting these. You know how to teach....... :-) And though they didn't send it with a battery for the amplifier/tuner, I have a couple externals and we're now tuned......this is going to be fun......
Loved reading your comment Thank You. So glad to be ehlping, especially as you are doing such a great thing for some local seniors. Hope you get to visit them in person soon but in the mean time, have fun making the vids and playing all your instruments.Warm greetings from Wales.
This is brilliant! I'm so glad I found this channel... I just purchased my very first (serious) instrument - a gorgeous Kala electric/acoustic ubass and I'm a total beginner, this was very easy to follow, super informative, very personal feeling and so fun to watch/play along with. Thanks so much, heading over to lesson 2 now!
Oh My Merci from Montreal! just had a crush on a Bass Ukulele from the pawnshop and you were the first one to appear on RU-vid! Thank You Sensei for this first amazing and fun class
Thanks for these Rachel. I used to mess around on a bass over twenty years ago, just treated my self to a bass ukele and have already learnt more from your first few lessons than i managed in several months trying to learn from books back then.😁❤
My first ubass uke just got delivered it's a Kala Nomad in mahogany fitted with Aquila Thunderblack strings don't know anything about them if there good or bad but they seem to have a nice tone so here I go lesson 1 on playing this beautiful instrument. Thank you for posting these videos cheers John
I will be getting my first ubass for my bday within a few days. I’m very excited about it and I’m very glad I found you channel just in time to begin 💕🤗
You are an excellent teacher! I was wondering if I wanted to try a bass uke so I could play along with the group and you have encouraged me! I'm going to get one and come back for more lessons. 😂
Just got my Luna Bari-Bass Ukulele, so I am very grateful for your lessons. Looking forward to the next lesson. Thank you very much. Sending greetings from the Czech Republic! Jindra
Oh wonderful! Brilliant! I've played the electric bass and UBass for quite some time - so I enjoy watching UBass videos just for fun. Your teaching method is wonderful. It's obvious you know how to teach! Bravo! I can't wait to watch all the rest of your UBass tutorials!
Hi I'm waiting for my ubass to arrive 😃 I'm so excited 🥳 I've never played anything before I'm a late starter 60 years young next month 🍾🥂and I can't wait to get started. Your lesson's look great & you make it easy for me to understand so big thank you for your time and putting all your lessons on RU-vid 👍 I've been watching your lesson's already 😂 just need my bass now. 😂😂 👍Thanks Rachel
May I first say that you are absolutely brilliant. I’m 60 years of age and have a balance disease that has stopped me being able to work so have needed a hobby. You inspired me to start playing through your videos and although progress is slow your teaching is brilliant. I have a gear for music like yours ,Can you tell me if the feedback problem with Bluetooth amp connectors would be the same with inline headphone amps ? I can’t afford an amp at present and thought a headphone amp might be the answer. Thank you
Hi Dave, Thanks for your lovely comment and so glad to hear you are enjoying and making progress. Honest answer is I haven't tried a headphone amp or at least I don't remember if I had any problems. I'm sure my hubby has one somewhere, if I can find it I'll try it and see if there are any issues.
This is awesome. there's so much about music theory and everything like that that I think is important somewhere along the way but this was exactly what I was looking for. I want to grab the bass out of the box and start playing it. I love this.
Отличные видеоуроки. Все ясно, понятно, никуда не торопясь, спокойно и легко. Дошел уже до 4го урока, но играю на обычной бас гитаре :) спасибо за отличные уроки! Привет из России)
Hi , my names Percy from Ashby in Leicestershire,I’ve just watched your beginner Bass tutorial and it was brilliant! , you kept me engaged all the way through! I’m going to try and play Bass! And subscribe ,Thank you , spot on !
I got a bass ukulele for holiday. I've been putting off learning, but. You seem like a great motivation for me there. I've liked subscribed and rung the bell!👍🤘
So many things to talk about!! I hope I was your 3k sub. I am a welsh American ❣️ Living in Ca. Iv been a musican for 21 years. Started on bass. I mostly play acoustic guitar in my punk bassed band. Selling my double bass at this time to get back into a solid cutaway acoustic bass and a uke bass. Really happy to meet you and hope we can talk some!:)
Love your lessons!! I am a senior and would like to purchase a Kala U bass but, not sure which Kala acoustic model to purchase. Please give me your opinion on this U bass. I am so excited by your lessons to make this purchase. Love your teaching style for the very beginner. Thank You!!!!
Thanks for such a lovely comment. It really does depend on your budget and whether you are looking at rubber strings or round wound strings? Kala are certainly the most well known U-Bass, and generally make great instruments but the more you pay, you do get better hardware, pickups etc. Are there any models or even other brands that take your fancy?
Im 51 and this is my first musical instrument, and have fell in love with everything bass now. If all teachers were like you the world would be a better place.
