Kevin VanDam is still to this day the GREATEST BASS ANGLER OF ALL TIME! Just watched him rack up another top 15 in the MLF Redcrest Championship. He never slows down. I remember watching this tournament and wanting to go down to Toledo Bend to try and catch fish the way he did in this tournament. I bought my first big cranking stick right after this tournament as well. Never gets old
KVD created the rod and reel cranking system.. he basically started all rod and reel set ups for different parts of the game.. Swim bait set ups Frogging set ups and so forth. He’s the absolute king of bass fishing !!
I do. I’ve been outclassed by several anglers in the past and thought “goddamn...there are so many levels above me...” And those guys were amateurs...multiply that by 20 and you’re starting to get there...
Yes they are I could hold my own though it makes it easier having sponsors to be able to have the best gear possible u give me the same boats rod reels I'd give em a runive won many tournaments not like theses but I've fished the Same lakes they fished anddne very wrll
Thanks so much Bassmaster for posting this. Congrads KVD for an awesome victory. Not just Kevin obviously , but he's probably taking the worst of the spectator boats . No way in the world I would do that to someone. Geez if you've got the money to follow someone around in your big bass boat yourself, you would think you would be courteous and smart enough to stay TOTALLY out of there way. Watch the weigh ins, watch it on TV, watch it on YT, but come on put yourself in that situation and realize that following these pros around the lake and getting in there way is just wrong.
I agree with ar these guys go through a lot to make this happen and too much is at state including millions of dollars, and endorsements also like KVD said"you dont come across these opportunities everyday" even the best in the world had that much to admit, the sport is very beneficial to the economy in our country as well as other countries for that matter and also when im fishing though im no pro or tournament angler i wouldn't get in anybody's way it's just rude and nobody should ever have to tell you that!
That's true they don't own the lake, but everyone with half a brain knows that you don't go near someone when they are on a spot fishing. Assholes do that When they are jealous because someone is catching fish right in front of them and they can't catch shit.
@@jackpickle5486 I’ve had one in each of my thumbs. First one was right through the knuckle. I had to push it through, snip the barb, and pull it back out. It honestly didn’t hurt until I started pulling it back out then it burned really weirdly and hurt like hell 😅
What a fun tournament. Toledo Bend is a fantastic lake for sure! Cool to see the mix of deep and shallow water fishing taking place in this event, and cool to see the GOAT come out with the win! Nobody better than KVD 🐐
Kevin... you're the man! I appreciate and respect your humbleness....but you are the man!!! Congrats....if I could get away from my 3 kids and work I'd love to spend a day on the water with you!! Keep killinem' man.
It's crazy how different this lake looks compared to how it did when I was growing up there in the 70s. The place was basically a flooded forest. We lived right down the road from Pendleton Harbor on the Texas side, and when you crossed that long bridge there were trees everywhere. You had to run in a boat to the Louisiana side to get north of that area. Crazy.
At 22:25 Chris Lane hooked a bass in the same exact spot I hooked my PB (7lbs6oz). Grew up on this lake and my camphouse is right around the corner from where he was fishing. Incredible spot. Incredible to see my honey hole on the bassmasters
I went to Okeechobee weigh in last month they said it would be on TV in two weeks still haven't seen it.I love the bass live, its only 4 hours a day each tournament but its a great way to see how the guys fish and talk. its funny a lot of the time they trash talk each other, fart ect. u get to see the real anglers.
They need to just ban spectators following the anglers, and use drones to cover the footage where spectators can watch back at the pavilion on big screens. I know they can't stop people from fishing public water, but just keep them from fishing right on top of the guys like that. It will increase their sales, keep the anglers more focused, and people wont fish the hell out of the spots.

I am same age as VD. And I am a fan. It drives me crazy these guys come down south and school us on catching Bass. I mean he’s from Michigan!!!! I would have told him that 10XD is mine!!! Lol. I really like KVD.
We host catch-and-release tournaments. The fish are kept in livewells and in tanks until after they are weighed, and then we release them back in to the lake. I don't have stats on hand for all of our tournaments this year, but at one of the hottest events of the season 96% of the bass caught during the four day tournament were released alive and well. - Sara
I land fish a lot in Fla. No livewell... But I got my phone and camera... so I get my quick weigh in, then a picture, then right back into the water to bet bigger and make more babies. I've was a B.A.S.S. member since Ray Scott launched it..and even way back then, B.A.S.S. was about catch and release. :) And my how you have grown. Good Stuff.
With the technology their putting into the livewells like flowing water, ph and oxygen levels inside water, ect most fish survive. I think it the fish that are gut hooked, gill hooked, the hooks down their throat and people use pliers further injuring the fish, and just improper hookset is what leads to the fish dying.
When the bite is good you can use anything but when the bite is dead, use frogs or worms. No weights on the worm. This means you need to use a ZEBCO spin cast reel. Yes I said it. You can cast a weightless worm a mile with one of those reels. The drag is smooth and you will have no trouble landing a large fish. I caught big pike on those reels 30 yrs ago when they were junk. Now they are much improved and very smooth. The drag is very nice and adjustable. No shame for being resourceful!
17:47 was me and my buddy! For the record we never fished his stuff!! You can't call yourself a fan and do something like that in the middle of competition. I don't see how anyone thinks that's right!
Lol! wrll it is bud not sure what the sudafed reference means. I guess I could post a pic of my huk shirt sighted by Kvd saying 2016 Toledo bend champ!! Amongst several other pros. I also went to bass fest this year. Crazy I know!!
Lol the announcer said the patriots said the back up QB was said to need to be the starter over tom Brady , crazy how things change he is now traded and having a great year
there's a bass that I'm trying to catch but it's not falling for any bait I throw I just got a frog bait but IDK I've bought so much and the bass is a big one it's at least a 9-10 pound bass
it is amazing how they can function fishing for money, to support their addiction, their way of life, and constantly be harrassed and followed to every single spot they go to by annoying spectators. it is amazing how they can hide the pressure so well.
Cody Guilloud no, you are NOT allowed to use a net in any Bassmasters tournaments. In the FLW tournaments, they DO allow netting of your fish when you get em to the boat.
