One of the greatest descriptions of bassoon vibrato and it’s uses in music as a soloist and supporting member of a ensemble. Master educator at work here!

Can you go over the nuances in bassoon fingerings usually not found in fingering charts? Like adding the resonance key to middle G, F# and Ab? Also, how to get trickier notes to sound good like F#? Love your videos, they've really helped me, as I'm self-taught and never really had formal bassoon lessons :)

Thank you !! For the first time I was able to grasp a way to get vibrato that did not default to my years as a professional sax player using jaw vibrato. Ha-Ha never worked , did not sound musical, and slipped to jaw every time. Who-Who made all the difference. You also laid out a simple explanation of when to use it, re ensembles. I was always able to balance my limited use of it, but was insecure. This was so clear . Since CoVId and returning to a small town, there isn't much paid work, but there are some excellent community orchestras, where I spend most my time. This has really helped me out, :)

Hi Nancy, I’m so glad that you’re starting to get the hang of using vibrato on bassoon, that’s exciting! And it’s great that you get the opportunity to try it out in an orchestra setting - that’s the best practice!

I thought about that, but a there are a lot of similarities between tuba and trombone/trumpet when it comes to switching to bassoon - check out those videos and let me know if that helps!

Hmm. Have you considered taking bassoon lessons? A bassoon teacher could work with you to figure out what’s holding you back. Sometimes all it takes is having someone listen to you to give you the feedback you need. If you send me a message through my website, I’d be happy to schedule a free 15min mini lesson with you via Zoom to help you get started. 🙂 Take care and hang in there!

Vibrato is generally to be avoided and as in the voice it has to be above 6Hz. If you cannot achieve that then avoid it. It will be dire unless you can use it properly. Slow vibrato (as seen with Callas) is appalling

I agree that super slow/wide vibrato isn’t tasteful!
