On a recent walk with my wife along the Chisholm Trail in Plano (Texas), we noticed some yellow flowers. The plant identification app on my phone said it was "bastard cabbage" - not a very nice name for such a pretty flower! I later learned that bastard cabbage is a serious invasive weed that is threatening the habitats of Texas bluebonnets and other native wildflowers.
The idea of a western folk song with that name was too tempting, so I wrote one. This may be the first in a series called "Folk Songs Nobody Asked For."
