People are calling him a reporter but hes clearly addressing an audience and looking around while he speaks, I think its supposed to be a politician or something along those lines giving their rehearsed speech.
completely agree with you on this one, i just scrolled down and was a little shocked that people thought of him as a reporter. Either that or current events have shifted the meaning of the video. Which from a social aspect, absolutely fascinating.
yeah this video didn’t age well given the events, at least here in the UK. even the lyrics are so relatable. this coupled with Doom Days, Blame and World Gone Mad sum this year up
I've always assumed that he was meant to be the CEO of Wild World Communications. Kind of surprised that no one else has said the same, but it probably doesn't matter that much. I think we're just meant to know that he is some highly influential individual. I always interpreted him as 'faking it' on behalf of WWCOMMS, most likely for his own wealth and/or power: corporate and insincere. WWCOMMS don't seem like they're good news. Maybe he's meant to be delivering a public apology for (or at least response to) something he or the company did?
@@liamcurtis9533 I beg to differ; I think they've aged exactly as well as they could have! Not to say that's a good thing of course; would prefer that they weren't so relatable. =P
The best bit is at 2:11 where the make up person, presumably retreats. And the politician who has been laughing at her jokes suddenly, but subtly, drops his smile and looks ta her with contempt. Showing he has been 'faking it'
I think this politician guy or whoever he is is the same person at the beginning of "Send The Off" (You can see him at the top right corner on a giant screen). He says "It was a slight on my honor, so he deserved it. But we're talking about the most brilliant mind this world has ever seen!" If I'm right, it might give some insight to the possible meanings of this video. :)
my interpretation (first time of watching) The TV represents society or the pressure society holds for us to pretend to be "okay" or mentally stable. This news reporter maybe symbolises those who aren't, especially the scenes where the camera and what the news reporter is actually doing contrast phenomenally - one with him screaming and trashing his desk and what the camera is showing - that he is smiling and pretending everything is indeed okay. Also with the screen with the script on it , this could be interpreted as the pressures of society and also the line 'fake smiles'. This is just my impression based on the music video.
I know what the meaning of this song is, or rather have a understanding. But, I can relate to this so much when it comes to me and my crush. I have no clue as to why.
I remember seeing this guy pop up on the big screen when I went to go see Bastille touring for Wild World. We were SO CONFUSED. I'm still a little confused.
Plot twist huh guys? The emotions/sides/feelings of a politician under pressure. How confused or frustrated they feel with media and their image. This could be a reference to past life problems, trauma, or moving on. Good day to you all. *drops mic and walks off briskly*
Okay, but seriously, the actor playing the reporter is SERIOUSLY under appreciated here, like he JUST PLAYS A REPORTER REALLY WELL. all the facial expressions, the gestures, the movements, he just does it so convincingly!
Omg yes then when they showed House of Parliament at the end which is basically the root of all lies and the master of faking it I was like oh my god that shade
What does the scrolling text on the bottom in all the different languages mean? The Japanese is a bunch of idioms and metaphorical phrases. Is the stuff in the other languages similar? If anyone's curious, here's a translation of the Japanese phrases in the order they scroll across: Sowing and reaping evil Using a better name to sell inferior goods Ignorance is bliss Once a fool, always a fool Dumplings over flowers (meaning the practical over the beautiful) Honesty is the best policy To direct things from behind the scenes, or to pull a puppets strings I don't remember the meaning of the last one, but it literally means don't feed autumn eggplant to your wife
Lyrics: And I don't think that that's a selfish want, I really don't. I'm not saying that I have this capacity because it's hard to develop that capacity on your own, when you're being stopped at every turn. Drive around, night time, nowhere to go Melt me down, I'm like wax to your jokes Lost and found, knocking heads, laying low And there's no point reliving crimes to lose this Still wanna waste all of my time I wanna waste all of my time Still wanna waste all of my time I wanna waste all of my time With you Oh my lover, my lover, my love We can never go back We can only do our best to recreate Don't turn over, turn over the page We should rip it straight out Then let's try our very best to fake it Show me joy, flower through disarray Let's destroy, each mistake that we made Then restore the color back to the grey There's no pride in sharing scars to prove it...
Still wanna waste all of my time I wanna waste all of my time Still wanna waste all of my time I wanna waste all of my time With you Oh my lover, my lover, my love We can never go back We can only do our best to recreate Don't turn over, turn over the page We should rip it straight out Then let's try our very best to fake it Help me turn a blind eye Days and nights we lost to weakness Help me turn a blind eye Days and nights we lost to weakness Oh my lover, my lover, my love We can never go back We can only do our best to recreate Don't turn over, turn over the page We should rip it straight out Then let's do our very best to fake it Oh my lover, my lover, my love We can never go back We can only do our best to recreate Don't turn over, turn over the page We should rip it straight out Then let's do our very best to fake it
Where do they get their inspiration from? They have fresh ideas for each song and the video (if there is one) ties in so well. Even when I don't imagine the video as it turns out to be, I still see how cleverly they have visually represented the song. Even though sometimes I have to rewatch the vudeot a few times to fully understand it.
I finally got a higher quality set of headphones, and I cannot believe how much of this song I was missing out on! The layers and details you put into it are truly appreciated.
If anyone's wondering what the greek phrases mean: "Γνώθι σεαυτόν" means acknowledging who you are and "άλλα λέει κι άλλα κανει" means he does something else than what he promised to do.
εχεiς δικιο σε αυτο..
Me too 😂 I was 14 and in my last year of middle school, I honestly miss walking home from middle school especially in the fall because of the colors lol
i think the music video is meant to portray how modern day politicians constantly put on a front and essentially 'fake' their confidence in the decisions they make. then, behind the scenes, they are panicking and stressed with no idea how to handle the situation except to put on a smile when the camera's rolling. this would also make sense as dan tweets a lot about british politics and seems very disillusioned by it. although this way of 'faking it' doesn't necessarily fit in with the lyrics, i think it definitely is another way of seeing the title.
Another theory is that it's a reporter/journalist, not a politician. Most people are saying that the reporter wants to say what he really thinks is right, how he feels, or even what is the truth, but has to put that aside and say what's on the teleprompter, fake the smiles. I'm a fan of both theories.
+Nik Cruz in most of it the guy is portrayed like a politician with the hand movements and surroundings but at the end it shows him like he's about to tell us about the news on scene
Though this doesn't only have to mean with politicians, journalists, or any social figure. This also represents how every day many many many people have to fake a smile, but when people look away they drop it because they can't do it anymore, just how it happened with the makeup lady.
That symbol is a Valknut, a symbol connecting to the burial sites of Norwegian gods like Odin, often thought to relate to Norwegian religious practices involving death
@@alejandrodemis8201 norse-mythology.org/symbols/the-valknut/ Yeah, it's widely agreed upon as a symbol revolving around Death, this article among others states it around 7 paragraphs in.
I have this very same symbol tattooed. I didn’t get it for any other reason beyond I liked the design but it’s interesting to learn that it has a rich history. Unfortunately I have been asked before if it’s a nazi symbol but I supposed the Germans stole quite a few old symbols back then.

+maisie moo I dove I to the song totally blind, so I was not prepared for anything. I haven't listened to any other of their songs yet, but this one sounds amazing.
It could still be interpreted as a love song because Bastille makes music videos that almost never correspond with the lyrics. Like "Oblivion", "Pompeii", "Good Grief", "Of the Night", and "Fake It". The song lyrics in this song do seem to imply that Dan is talking about his lover, or maybe he really is talking about a news reporter who is slowing going mad who is forced to fake it for the camera and that forces him to go mad. Because only the artist will truly be able to understand the intended message within their art. Welp that's just my opinion, but the great thing about art is that one can interpret it 1,000 different ways. Bastille is my favorite band and I'm glad that we can enjoy this music together.
+Jack Iribarren i'm pretty sure this isn't just about a single news reporter faking it. I think it's subtlety hinting at how everyone has to fake stuff to make it better but it's a different story behind the scenes.
+Harrison James yeah I never interpreted it a single news reporter faking it, I also felt the message said how everyone has to fake it sometimes. but like I said, everyone has their own way of viewing the song
Shit man. Last year when my mom kicked me out I listended to this album all the time in my car and I would play this song after visiting my bf and hitting the road to drive 4 hours home. 🙍 makes me remember the days i had to sleep in my car and pretend everything was okay.
I just ran away from a toxic home and this song is what I cry to, especially when I'm grieving over my little sister I won't get to spend time with anymore.
@@whitleyphillips6092 I hope you'll do better in the months and years to come and I hope you can find a way to help your little sister as well :'( . Wish you better days ❤🌷
