The thing that has always blown my mind is how bastion was made by basically 3 dudes in their college dorm room, when it first came out and I played it I realized rather quickly that SG was a studio to pay attention to.

The ending song is a mix of 2 songs from the game, "Build that wall" and "Mother, I'm here", which are the themes of 2 major characters in the game. Highly recommend these as well, or even playing the game, one of my absolute favourites! There are only a few games I can sit and listen to the entire soundrack while liking every single track, and Bastion is one of them.

About Transistor and Pyre: Transistor is somewhere in-between a tactical and an action game, with music being very important in the game. You play as a singer who lost her voice, and there's a button on the controller to make her hum along whichever soundtrack is currently playing. This feature serves no gameplay purpose whatsoever, which I find makes it even better. Pyre is like 80% reading, which may be why you didn't buy it. I loved it though, probably the best "choices matter" game I've played, and the music is on par with others Supergiant titles. Like there's a single theme for the three first characters you meet, and depending on which is currently talking, different instruments are used. ...I love Supergiant.

I remember first discovering this game- I was around 9 or 10 years old, heard my parents playing "SAIL" by Awolnation in the car. Hopped on the family computer at home and searched up "Sail" on RU-vid. First result was "Setting Sail, Coming Home" from Bastion. It was completely unintentional chance, but I discovered an incredible soundtrack that day, completely forgetting my original query. It took me a few years to finally own and play the game, but it was well worth the wait.

For what it's worth, "Setting Sail, Coming Home" is essentially a mashup duet of the two major solo vocal songs, "Build That Wall" and "Mother, I'm Here", all of which sound very different, and very good. My favorite of the 3 is probably "Build That Wall". Also, IIRC Darren Korb has described the genre of Bastion's soundtrack as "frontier trip hop".

Bastion is my favorite Supergiant game, and one of my favorite games of all time, and the soundtrack is a huge reason why. It’s one of the first game OSTs that really got me hooked on VGM over 10 years ago despite growing up playing games way before then. To this day, both the game and its music hold a special place in my heart, and I still sing along to vocal tracks every time I hear them all these years later. You’re in for a real treat once you get around to playing Bastion, the game is a masterpiece.

It's been nigh on 13 years since this game came out and I played it. That's half my life ago. And still to this day no game has shaped me quite like Bastion did. I was just the right age and this game was just that good to completely change how I viewed games, and honestly media in general. Games were no longer just your Sonic the Hedgehogs and your Spyro the Dragons (good games still) but now they could be MORE than that, to me. It made me appreciate games as an art form, as a storytelling medium. It made me appreciate VGM like I never had before. The ending to Bastion was the first time a game ever made me cry. I had Bastion laptop wallpapers for years, Setting Sail Coming Home was my ringtone, and to this day I tear up a little when Ashley's voice comes in in that first verse. This game was genuinely life-changing to little 13 year old me and I wouldn't be who I am now without it. A beyond incredible game

Bastion is a masterpiece. I really like how the Terminal March is the theme of the Tazal Terminal, the capital of the Ura, a subterranean people. It's called a Terminal because it's basically a large hub city where many of their tunnels connect, but it also references how in the game lore the first war between the Ura and the Caels is due to Caelondia building a train network over the Ura territory, causing damage and cave ins to much of their infrastructure. Terminal, like a train terminal. And the percussion sounds quite a lot like the warning chimes at a railroad crossing! The voices in the Setting Sail/Coming Home are the two Ura characters you meet in the game. Both living with the Caels for completely different reasons and with different perspectives on the path of the game and what should be done. There are other Ura, but they don't talk to you. Despite this, my absolute favorite scene in the game involves the Ura and they manage to express a very complex idea without saying a word.

Oh hell yeah, Bastion's GREAT. I mean you can tell that it's an early soundtrack, not as grand as some of the tracks in Transistor and Hades get - I mean, Transistor definitely lets Ashley Lynn Barrett off a bit more XD - but still incredibly solid. (Also RIP TB, since I definitely associate Bastion's OST and Terminal March in particular more with the Co-Optional Podcast/TGS Podcast than the game by this point.) Was going to request Build that Wall and Mother, I'm Here by themselves but more than happy to just hear a reaction to Setting Sail, Coming Home. The two feel a bit weird by themselves anyway.

There's also a special live recorded variation of some sort for an anniversary, it's (like always with supergiant games) free to watch on youtube. It's called "Remember the Bastion", and I think it's also amazing.

I did notice one link to Hades in the first song - the sound at 1:45 seems to be the same sound they used for shocked or surprised reactions in Hades.

As a million others will tell you here; Yeah, Bastion was their first game. Then came Transistor, Pyre, Hades, and now Hades 2. As for the songs, most I can say without spoilers is that 'Setting Sail, Coming Home' is two songs mixed as one, each one belonging to a separate characters in-game.

Pyre is probably the strangest game that they've made, but it's also one of my favourites. 3v3 arcade basketball visual novel is a very hard sell, but it comes with probably one of their best narratives.

Bastion's sound is like if a bunch of middle eastern and south Asian people settled in the old west and are playing around the fire with people playing guitar and fiddle, except then throw some occasional distortion on top of it.

One thing about the ending song is that it has its own identity in that it sounds kinda hopeful while it is also a mix of two characters themes, one of them being a war march while the other is a funeral march/dirge.

Glad you got to hear more Bastion music! I do want to say that since the day I did request Setting Sail, Coming Home I was very conflicted about how I wanted this song presented to you. Ultimately I left it at this and hope one day you get to experience it in game for yourself. Great video as always and I look forward to more!

Darren has said in interviews that the style of Bastion OST was Acoustic Western Trip-Hop. And, personally, to get the full effect of "Setting Sail, Coming Home", you should listen to "Build That Wall" and "Mother, I'm here" first.

The Bastion OST is such a vibe, a playlist of masterpieces. 'Setting sail, coming home' just brought back so many memories I had to pause to collect myself. Even if you don't get around to playing, I hope you eventually get more gems from this soundtrack, definitely worth playing it if you love Hades.

Heeey, Bastion is back! ❤ Very nice. Definitely play it someday, it's awesome. Though if I had to choose only one game for streaming/VOD purposes, I'd go with Transistor over Bastion. It's got more...catchy moments to react to, I think is the way to put it. That's not to say I wouldn't watch a Bastion playthrough, of course I would, don't be silly!

Yeah, there's absolutely nothing else like Bastion. Not even their other games. It was arguably _the game_ that put "indie games" on the map as a force to be reckoned with. With a team well under 1% of the size of a AAA studio's, a budget probably even smaller than that, and all but no marketing budget whatsoever, they created an all-time classic that a decade and a half later still stands out WAY more in my memory than _anything_ made by a AAA from the same time period. Each of their games is _very_ different from the rest, and yet they all _feel_ like Supergiant games. The soundtracks are all very different, yet they all _sound_ like Supergiant and Darren Korb. I personally couldn't get into Pyre or Transistor _at all,_ while Hades and Bastion both really tickled me in good spots. I probably have similar play times in each, but for very different reasons. Bastion is a fairly short game, even to 100%, I've just done, I dunno... five, six full, 100% playthroughs over the years? Something like that. It's a game that leaves me with a very particular emotional landscape that lingers for days or even weeks. Hades is a little less my style normally... I'm old and slow and don't deal with repeated defeats all that well, but there's enough of a sense of progression in Hades, both in gameplay and story tidbits, that I just kept going and going and going, _way_ after I'd have gone away from most rogue-lites, just to see that _one_ extra line of dialog in the 29th full run that wasn't in the 28th. xD Which since argually _most_ of the story comes around _after_ you "beat the game" the first time... yeah. xD

In a lot of ways, Bastion is very obviously a first effort, albeit a very polished one. The gameplay is a fairly basic hack-and-slash adventure with simple controls and a bare minimum of upgrades for it to technically qualify as having RPG elements. The story is also fairly rudimentary, although it tells it in some interesting ways. However, the game absolutely oozes style, and its soundtrack is a big part of that. If you decide to go back to Bastion after playing Hades, though, I fear you might be a bit disappointed. There is just simply not the same level of polish, and unlike something like Pyre or Transistor, the story and worldbuilding doesn't quite make up for the gameplay deficiencies.
