Dubbed as the world's most pleasant prison, Bastoy prison in Norway offers a contrasting experience for inmates compared to the conventional cramped cells. Instead, prisoners can bask under the sun on the beach or take a leisurely walk through the lush pine forest.
Sitting on a small island, Bastoy prison accommodates 115 prisoners, some of whom have committed serious and violent offenses. Despite being the largest low-security prison in Norway, Bastoy is more of a community than a prison. Inmates reside in shared homes, each with their own bedrooms and shared amenities. They can wear their own clothes and visit the prison shop, library, or church.
During their free time, inmates can engage in activities such as fishing, football, and working out at the gym. A movie room and weekly schedule of courses, lectures, events, and concerts are also available. Furthermore, they even operate the island's ferry service, although no one appears to be tempted to use it as an opportunity to escape.
Bastoy's approach to prisoner rehabilitation is vastly different from traditional punitive measures. Critics have argued that the prison resembles a vacation spot more than a correctional facility. However, Norwegian authorities maintain that this more lenient approach is more effective.
