This man is so clear, informative, easy to listen to. For weeks, I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of Todo will give me excellent quality without using too much of my budget. Have read manuals, spec sheets, catalogs, reviews. Just too many features and info too scattered to make a confident decision. (Installing 5 toilets in new house). This man just clarified my choices, in 5 minutes time. Thank you!
Drake II? How do you like it? I need a new toilet. I have an old, cheapest AS round toilet not flushing well at all now. Not even a piece of TP. Plumber said I could buy a new toilet, but if issue is venting, it won’t help. The toilet in the other bathroom is literally on the other side of the wall. They share the same vent. It flushes fine. My issue is the master bathroom is tiny and a 36” door BARELY clears the current round toilet to the point it takes plumbers a couple hours to find the sweet spot so it won’t leak and door clearing. Plumber last week put in new wax rings as I had a leak. Two days later, it’s leaking. Toto seems to have the shortest ROUND toilets between them, Kohler snd AS by 1/2” or more. I think this is what I need to get in the wax rings correctly for proper sill AND allow the door to clear.
I was delighted to find this video after my contractor suggested a Toto. Seems like you have awesome content on just about every topic. I should just come here first every time when researching home-improvement topics! Thanks again wonderful site!
Thanks for the great video! To answer your question, I am looking into a modern looking Toto skirted toilet, possibly the Nexus or the Aquia. Been reading up a lot of renowned brands like Kohler and American Standard, but ended up sticking to my initial pick which is Toto 😄
Most excellent video, as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on some Toto model. We're out in the country on a deep well and leech field septic, so we're blessed not to have water worries; the higher flow the better. Looking at the Drake sku # MS746124CSMFG#01 which is described as "close coupled", but nowhere can I find out what that means. Thanks for the great overview. -In need of a clue, in New England
@@RemodelMedia Hi, I'm about to do a remodel of my bathroom. I need a back to wall floor standing toilet but want to retain all the key features like tornado flush and advanced ceramic coating with rimless. Ideally it will be elongated as I'm a guy and possibly I would like to add a washlet seat to it at a later date. Can you advise which once I should be going for?
The. Toto toilet in my apartment is a pain in the ,,, well, you know. It collects "material" all around the toilet in a little ledge up underneath the lip that surrounds the bowl. I've never noticed this in other toilets.. It's difficult to clean and gums up quickly.
Toto bidet seats fit most standard elongated or round toilets. Send me a message on Instagram or Twitter with a picture and I can help you double check that.
I just listened to the entire video thank you so much for all that information I myself am a salesperson and a bathroom kitchen store and I'm learning all about Toto this was very informative thank you very much
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very educational and informative. At 7:23 you mentioned a clockwise rotation but the under rim water passages show a counterclockwise direction, and diagrams indicate the same thing (side view: clockwise , overhead view: counterclockwise). I think these are mistakes that were overlooked in the editing phase. Diagrammatic mistakes of this kind can also be seen in some turbocharger and jet turbine illustrates and animations. Please clarify.
thank you - very helpful. We remodeled and upgraded 2 toilets- a toto drake II and a toto 1 piece - loved them both, 1 piece easier to clean. now moving and need to replace all 3 toilets and trying to decide 1 piece or total drake 2 again? unsure if any difference other than easier to clean 1 vs 2 piece
I have 3 American Standards -- 2 are water saving and one is 50 years old. I hate the new ones, the tanks wobble on both and the tank is cracked on one of them. And, I don't like the fill valves which are unique $50 and were available by mail only! The 50-year old model is great -- I keep a filled 2 liter bottle in the thank it to save water. The bottle occasionally tips but otherwise it's been great. Looking to replace the other 2 asap. Toto is looking good. Can I get the fill and or flush valves off the shelf?
Drainage to city drainage I understand from plumbers that the low water usage toilets ten to clog up the lines from your house to city lines is this true
Great video. Now here’s an important question will a tornado flush work properly in the Southern Hemisphere or does Toto manufacture a clockwise model?
Hi, Dave. Great video. We unfortunately can't use the elongated size due to bathroom space, so we are looking at the round Drake II. Almost all reviews on the Drake II refer to the elongated. Will the round perform just as well as the elongated? I didn't know if the shape would effect the bowl sides cleanliness of the flush system. Thanks for your reply.
When you go with the same flush system yes. The old Eco Drake, aka Drake 1, aka E-Max flushing system is OK but the Drake II Cyclone will perform better amzn.to/32a8blh
The main benefit and intent of elongated is to allow the penis to hang freely when seated instead of coming in contact with the bowl. Though this may not be much of an issue for those not so endowed.
Great video! Any news/experience with the Aquia IV? I'm debating between the 1.0 and 1.28. The Legato is also on the table but i prefer the dual flush systems. Thanks!
I’m binging your videos as I plan a major reno. Currently knee deep (intellectually speaking) in toilets. I inherited Totos in my house from previous owners. I think they are Ultramax II. They constantly plug. Constantly. Is it just that I have pipes from 1957? Which should I buy for the new bathrooms I’m putting in?
My Drake II is 5 years old and it wants to keep running. I have to jiggle it 9 times out of 10. Crap sticks to it easily, bad pool size. I was a big Toto fan. Probably owned 9 in our family. Not sure I am going with a Toto next time.
Our grandkids were frequently clogging our toilets with too much paper. I purchased two Toto toilets (Drake Model) to replace the original toilets and lo and behold NO MORE CLOGGING. We love the Toto brand.
***this is a long reply so please read all the way through*** Amy Pennington I suppose that depends on if you’re talking about the Drake or the Drake II and the ultramax or the ultramax ii. From a flushing performance perspective The original Drake is the same flushing system as the original ultramax they both use E-max. But the drake is a two-piece toilet. One piece like the ultramax is better, it lasts longer less prone to leaks. The Drake II and the Ultramax II use the updated double cyclone flush, which flushes more cleanly than the E-max. And again the Ultramax II is a one piece toilet as opposed to the Drake II which is a two-piece. A sidenote to keep in mind is that all of the II series double cyclone toilets are also taller “universal height” seats. Which most people prefer. The short answer to your question is if I was looking for the best possible flush and the sturdiest toilet it would be the Ultramax II. See link below. amzn.to/2stybIs
If you need more information about why a One piece is better than a two-piece you should watch this video here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mP6iaNHCyUQ.html
So what’s the difference between the Carlyle II vs the UltraMax II? I see one is skirted and one is not. Send help! Thank you, and may you never run out of TP.
@@RemodelMedia Do they both have a slanted top? Also, where’s the best place to get a 6 pack of toilets? Could you ship me some to VA? Would love to support you as a thank you for the content. Hopefully toilets are cheaper by the (half) dozen!
Is the Tornado Flush considered to be a "pressure-assisted" toilet? If not, who makes a low-profile (needs to fit under a pork-chop shelf) toilet with pressure assist?
Eric Pollins No a pressure assisted toilet is a toilet with a little tiny engine in it. And it sounds like an airplane taking off in your bathroom. Although I did an episode on Niagara toilets a while back at the kitchen and bath industry show. They have a very quiet pressure assisted toilet. You can watch it here The Most Water Efficient Toilet on the Market KBIS 2019 Interview w/ Niagara Conservation Corp. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I0GJryg94IE.html
The tornado flush however is considered a bulk flush. It will flush a lot so if you’re looking for a low profile toilet with the tornado flush check these two out. Toto Carolina II amzn.to/2NJjVU4 Toto Supreme II amzn.to/2qQun30 They’re the same toilet but one is skirted and one is not.
For the record I own one older Emax and one newer tornado flush toilet in my house currently. They both perform great but the tornado is easier to keep clean.
We have just installed by a professional a Toto toilet Model ST243E#01 (1.28g). We are not happy with it because it leaves paper and solid waste behind frequently in the bowl and will take multiple flushes to no avail. Is this model an older Toto technology? Might you suggest a different model of Toto to get a better results?
I hope this helps answer the question. Thanks for asking and let me know how I can help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-epw_NWXVZrM.html
The Toto Drake II is dual flush with a 1.6 gallon maximum. It is the best toilet that I have owned but it is still not perfect. Crude to say, but there are still bowl stains after a major event. Anyway, the Toto Drake II has a larger spillway ( pipe diameter) that most toilets. It helps. In the old days, the toilets flushed with 3 gallon tanks so the siphon action was enormous; not so with the lower capacities. Conservations laws have limited these capacities so we are all stuck with lower performing toilets. I was so aggravated by dealing with clogs that I thoroughly researched the subject. Hell... I am an expert!
I understand that flush strength and low water usage are important but I never hear anyone discuss the toilet refill time..... Can you shed some light on that?
I covered your comment in my most recent quick tip Tuesday episode. Thanks for the feedback. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-31WKURLGIeA.html
@@RemodelMedia I always test by not allowing the float to stop the water flow so that the water will rise above the overflow tube. In my case (Toto Drake) the water would have overflowed the tank so I slowed the flow rate at the shut-off to ensure the overflow tube could handle that rate. I say this because, years ago, I had a neighbor that had a toilet with the big ball & lever type fill valve. When they returned from a short holiday they discovered that the ball had come unscrewed from the lever (rod) and the tank had been spilling water over the top onto the floor, down to the kitchen below, etc., etc. There was a LOT of water damage! I decided to test mine and, sure enough, it would have done the same thing with the shut-off valve wide open. Ever since then, when opening the shut-off I always test. By the way, great channel - I subbed.
Can you explain the style of lower trapway that appears to have a slight bump before end of the trapway? Some appear to have a large open area and some appear to almost have 2nd water trap?
I’m not sure what you’re referring to. Can you give me some models as an example and I can give you a comparison between the two? Could you be referring to a unifit trap versus a standard trap?
@@RemodelMedia Hello, here are some examples of the lower trapway near the hold down bolts. They all appear to have a raised hump. I wonder if the raised hump area is hollow or is there also an internal raised hump? Thanks....
@@RemodelMedia I did forget to list them, sorry about that. They are the American Standard Champion, Toto Eco Ultramax, Toto Drake 2, American Standard Cadet 3. They all have the raised hump in the lower trapway area. Is it hollow inside the hump, or is there also an internal raised hump? Some are very extreme and appear to be a 2nd water trap.
Hey Dave, great video. got a AquaSource Watersense with elongaetd bowl last summer 2019. Only 1.28 galons. The long bowl is most comfortable toilet I've ever used but tell that to my ex wife LOL
Thanks for watching. Gentlemen definitely seem to enjoy the majority of the benefits when it comes to the elongated bowl. 😂 just make sure you subscribe so you never miss an episode.
We are starting a remodel 1-6-2020. I am debating between the Eco Drake II and the newer model Drake (CST746CEMFG#01) which has dual flush using a trip lever, not a top push button (which I dislike). Do you have any comments or recommendations for purchasing one over the other?
This is a great question and I will have a full complete answer in video format hopefully uploaded today but The short answer is I have the Drake II in my master bath and we put two it in my parents house. I would prefer that one over the dual flush.
@@RemodelMedia THANK YOU! Would you please include some specifics such as if either model uses a siphon jet or uses a flapper? My husband is dead set against another toilet with a flapper and I am dead set on purchasing a TOTO.
ClarkBarKid well the siphon jet is the hole at the bottom of the toilet bowl. A flapper is that rubber disc inside the tank. I’ll post the link to the episode here when it’s ready. Also make sure you subscribe so you get the notification when it gets uploaded.
@@RemodelMedia Hi! We purchased the Drake II 1.28 for that remodel and are very satisfied. We are now remodeling the second bath and debating between the 1 piece Ultra Max II and the Drake II, in either the 1.28 or 1.0. Thanks for your great, informative videos!
I was looking at Ultramax II sold at Lowe's, as we get 10% discount. Not sure how it is different from Supreme II. Then there is the slim-design one Carlyle that has sleek design but funky install with extra piece I'm not too keen on. Thanks for this video!
Great question! The Ultramax II is a one piece toilet with a standard height in the back on the tank. It uses the double cyclone flush. You can buy it here: amzn.to/2XTxQOb The Supreme II is the exact same toilet with a lower back. You can buy it here: amzn.to/32PQg14 The Carlyle II is exactly like the Ultramax II except it has the clean skirt on the side, I’ve installed plenty with the unifit rough in and it actually gives as good, or maybe better seal than a regular toilet on a wax ring. It’s definitely easier to put on and get right the first time. I remember the first toilet I ever installed, I ruined a few wax rings before I got on there right. I wish it had the Unifit. I’m happy to recommend them, but all three are really good toilets. You can buy it here: amzn.to/2XSu5IB
Hi Dave, we are trying to decide between the Drake II 1.28 and the 1.0. It will be an elongated, standard rough in model. Here in Toronto, it’s about a $30 up charge for 1.0, which is not a big deal. Which of those two models, would you choose for your own home, at the present time? Thanks.
I have used both on projects recently and in either case both toilets got rave reviews. All things being equal my first choice would be the 1.28, unless you’re in a drought area, but I doubt Toronto has any water shortages. Another thing to consider is do you get a rebate from your city for using “green products”? Check with your local utility company. If that were the case maybe I would go with 1.0.
The Toto Drake II is the best toilet we have ever had. Everyone hates to deal with a clogged toilet and so far, the Toto has performed better than the Kohler units in the other bathrooms. I installed it 18 months ago and now I am now certain that Toto is the best.
Sirs, there's little doubt that Toto toilets are nice, but for twice the price or more, they should be. I bought a Lowes toilet and it works fine. A toilet isn't computer science.
The original Ultramax uses a G max technology. The new Ultramax II (which is a 1.28gpf) uses the newer tornado 🌪 flushing technology. I have both types in my house and I say that they perform equally well. However my preference is for the tornado because the tornado gets dirty less. It has a cleaner flush.
O... is the price for the II more expensive? I see that the Ultra is alittle over 500 here in NYC at HomeDepot.. that's pushing my $$ limit but I would prefer the strongest flush.. ty again . Joe
I see that the specs for the Ultramax and the II height is almost 17" without seat.. My needs is that the height be no more than 15".... Can you make a suggestion on a toilet that's equal to the Ultra II that is no highier than 15"?
Then in that case if you need the lower seat then the original Ultramax is the best one for you. Most toilet brands are going to a taller seat. For the record you should be able to pick up the Ultramax II for around $485 if you shop around.
CRAP ..American Standard brand new Champion 4 ..both have chunky uneven bottom Porcelain and difficult to sit flat or safely tighten down..LEAKING from flush valve after 1 month...wastes water constantly...Only real fix is to take apart and adapt a TOTO or other simple flap valve , which is easy to replace....Pissed off that this is necessary on 2 new toilets..Rona / Lowes and Home Depot should stop selling..this garbage...What about EPA or which ever government agencies over see this water wasting..
Okay video just because it takes so long to get to the best toto. I mean five minutes of History that's just too long. Just my my take I wasn't really into all that history
Very good information. Just one small correction, the 3.5 gallon per flush toilets were introduced in the mid 1980s. The 1.6 gallon per flush toilets arrived in the mid 1990s as a result of federal legislation (EPACT of 1992).
OK, I understand you want to add humor, but I have a serious toilet problem and I am watching this video to get serious advice, so please take that big wheel clip out. It has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, it detracts from my attention and does not belong here.
I’ll keep that in mind. Many people find plumbing material dry (no pun intended) so I try to make it an easy pill to swallow. However in retrospect I agree and going forward I have tried to minimize the punchlines. As far as the audio you mentioned on the other episode. I apologize. That was one of the very first episodes I ever filmed so the audio is a little out of whack. But thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching. You said you have a serious problem. You can call me as well and pick my brain 🧠. I got a call the other day from a lady in Ohio who needed a kitchen sink. 951-834-4172
@@RemodelMedia Easy pill to swallow. That's a good way to put it. The ones I have simply can't get the big pill down and that's why I am shopping for a new one. I need something that's going to break up the fight. You know what I am saying?
Fox Rivers I know exactly. My best recommendation would be, if you’re set on buying a Toto and you want to skip the “why buy a Toto” history lesson go straight to the 5:20 mark.
@@FoxRivers778 remember you can call me too and pick my brain 🧠. I got a call the other day from a lady in Ohio who needed a kitchen sink. 951-834-4172
@@RemodelMedia Quite simply, I need something that is going to break up the fight and if not, I'm thinking any toilet that can suck down a dozen golf balls, should probably do the trick.
