The story goes that King Dharmangada and Queen Satyavati of the Chola Dynasty prayed to the Goddesses Lakshmi for a daughter after losing their hundred sons in war. The Goddesses granted their wish and the baby was named Lakshmi. However, the baby survived many mishaps and her parents named her Bathukamma, which means "life" and "mother".
