Thanks for the excellent content. I was buying game used jerseys about 6-8 months ago and have noticed prices softened and there was far less competition in terms of buyers. It's also great you give the advice to younger collectors about buying index funds and benefit of compound growth. I find the pandemic gains kinda ruined them, they want 20-30 per year vs. the typical 8-10%. Really enjoy the content.

Ouch. Absolutely massive tank job for that seller. Add in fees and opportunity cost and he's definitely at less than 50% of what his 1.1M should've grown to. Had to sting even if you are rich...

I think the smart money is now picking up these golden age super keys on the cheap. It's going to be really hard for that buyer to lose money on that book if he holds it at least 5 years.

I agree, although the one collectible I’d say has a floor of value would be vintage coins (particularly gold). Not saying coins couldn’t go down but, precious metals are always worth what they’re made of. (worth it’s weight in gold 😉) That being said, the S&P 500, or even single stocks (if you actually know what you’re doing) will always be a better investment long-term.

Now is a buyers market and it gives the fans of the books a better chance at obtaining them. That’s what makes comic books valuable in the first place. I agree that the prices may not come back for a long time as Hollywood movies suck and the population collapse looms
@DeltaFH
@DeltaFH 2 месяца назад
Isn't two years quite a short amount of time to hold that comic and try to put it back into the market? Wouldn't that be a similar bad play as buying an index fund and trying to sell that only two years in, instead of giving it some time to meaningfully grow.
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 2 месяца назад
Very much so. My guess is that the seller may have needed the money or another possibility is the original buyer of that book (when it sold for over $1 million +) died and his family consigned it back to Heritage. But yes, it was a bad play indeed, regardless...

Highest price ever for the grade, wait 2 years to resell, the bidder will lose most of the time. Yes, that was a bad sale about 40 % below market. Same auction, Batman 66 and 92 up about 10%, Batman 181 up 20%. Highest graded sales like Torchy 4 and Mad 6 were up enormously. Comics since 1975 have outperformed the Dow Jones by 10 times. Probably means how unreliable the Dow is to represent any type of growth. A Detective 27 in 2.5 sold for 410,000 in 2018 prior to Covid. And a 3.0 slightly brittle sold for 600,000 this year which is about 30% below value. A 6.5 sold this year as well about 12% below value. Part of what is happening is that some buyers stay away from anything below off-white pages, so a cream or light tan to off-white page quality is generally undesirable. It used to be brittle and slightly brittle, but that has moved up. When it comes to slabbed number grades, they mean next to nothing unless you look at page quality.

Why is heritage still in business and not closed with its managers in prison for the wata crap they pulled?
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 2 месяца назад
Because shill bidding is not always illegal (assuming Heritage engaged in this, and I am not saying they did by making this response), and because the antiques and collectibles trade is a market devoid of almost all regulation. You can manipulate these markets with little to no recourse. Why do you think 'investing' in collectibles is the 'it' thing to do? The stock market is highly regulated. The collectibles market is not.

I thought of a question about coin investing that might be stupid but it is very interesting to me. It has to do with the key date 1934 s peace dollar. I was looking at the very high prices for mint state peace dollars. I was wondering if say an m62 peace dollar for that year and mint mark could be considered investment grade. After all it is much more expensive than many coins that you believe are investment grade. Just curious.

Price increases aren’t linear, or even supposed to be for collectibles or traditional investments. 1sr Ed Pokémon benefited from the pandemic boom. Still materially higher over the last decade and IMO still will be in the next decade. I’m sure Batman #1 will eclipse the pandemic high at some point over a number of years. Short term “investing” definitely has its risks despite anything being labeled “blue chip” stocks or collectibles.
@ReservedInvestments
@ReservedInvestments 2 месяца назад
Correct, but it does not change the fact these are highly speculative items with no underlying cash flows. As such, this risk alone goes against the mass hysteria being promoted by most RU-vidrs that buying top tier collectibles are inherently without risk. At the end of the day, an S & P 500 index fund held over the long term is much safer than any kind of collectible.

You can, if you are so willing, replicate an index just by buying the same weighted amount of individual stocks that make up the index in question. That said, it would be far easier to just buy the dang index fund and be done with it! Rebalancing that amount of stocks and following the exact beta of an index fund can be a challenge to even someone educated in finance, let alone the average investor.
