After Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered, he swore vengeance against criminals and decided to serve justice. He believed bats feared criminals so he had a bat-inspired persona to fight crime. Bruce became known as the Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight, the World's Greatest Detective and Batman. It does have nice references and meta Comedy if you're into comics but you can't see past the butt jokes (yes they are annoying but I can ignore them) The show creators clearly know what they are doing and it's self aware as well

Batman: The Animated Series, Along with the rest of the DCAU [Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited], Will always be My favourite Interpretation of the Character. Sophisticated writing, Detailed artstyle, Orchestrated music and actual Jokes that never resorted to Toilet Humour [Excluding that terrible Batman and Harley Quinn Film but best to not even think about It] will always make It an amazing series to Me. After the DCAU, I would say Young Justice Is a very close second.
