Little correction: Second Chances and Dark Knight Detective vol 1 should be right before The Cult. The Long Halloween introduces Dick and happens during year three/four, it's a bit weird to put that story *after* Jason's introduction in Second Chances during year nine/ten. Also, Tales of The Demon should be after Dark Victory, as Dick is already Robin in it.
@@Mark-pl3bv hi mark How do you know what happens and in what year? I'm trying to write an order to read and can't find it anywhere (Google) Now trying to piece a reading order together from RU-vid videos
@@dom020876 Have you tried CLZ Comics. It’s a comic database app, and is amazing. You just scan the barcodes and it uploads everything for you. It’s good for when your out and you need to check what’s in your collection.
First of all. Welcome aboard. Second: Do not be overwhelmed. I promise the more you read the more things will make sense. This is more of a guide as to when to read these stories available in collected editions. If anything I’m here to help if you have questions.
@@NearMintCondition I started reading Batman at the start of lockdown with Morrisons run and though it probably wasnt the perfect jumping on point what you say is true. The more you read the more you'll understand.
I really appreciate your spoiler warnings and how you avoid those pages. Some people are like "Well it's been out for so long so who cares", but that makes no sense to me. The stories are new to a lot of us, can't expect us to be caught up on EVERYTHING out there lol. Love your reading order vids!!
Man... I really want to get into this, but like, while i appreciate these videos and i can see the passion and love for the comics that go into them, literally every reading guide of any long running comic series infuriates me. It's always like "Oh yeah, start with these collection of issue 404-407 from 1987 and then read this one from 1995, and then you need to read this one-off of shoot from 1991, then you can read this almost direct followup to the first run you read, but it takes place after a major event that you haven't read yet, and then you need to see this stage play from 1975, and then you can read issue 402....... I hate it I hate it I hate it
I agree! This is what I feel like has gotten people to no longer read comics. But what I’ve been doing is just jumping right into it man. I try not to stress out about what to read first. I just dive right in to what I see interesting. Later on your brain will start connecting the dots.
@@harlingen23 yeah i feel like this as well, i'll just start picking up what interest me the most and go from there, not bothering with reading orders and following sagas, this stuff is 30+ years and iam just in it for the whole vibe
@@pedrocoelho2135 yup! Plus, it takes the fun out of it. Makes it feel like homework. Just jump right in. We already know the origin story of most of the characters.
@@harlingen23 I agree! When I was first getting into these comics I was stressing out about trying to read it all in order, and how expensive some of these oop trades are, and just trying to read each characters origin. I’m still trying to do that in order but I no longer stress out about skipping chunks of these stories.
I think you should just pick up where you want and go from there. I have started with Year One, currently reading Year Two. Have The Dark Knight Rises, Arkham Asylum, Batman/Supetman, The Man Who Laughs all on the way now for me to get into... May not be the most definite way to start, but its a start! Comics are just for fun at the end of the day
This is a very late reply, so you may have found them already lol. But ebay was my best friend when finding more niche stories. They unfortunately just don't seem to get modern reprints unfortunately. That's also kind of fine by me though, I think the art often looks better on that old paper.
Me : Reading comics from the pre-crisis era , cronologically Every comprehensive look : Starts at 1986 ( post-crisis ) :( I'll get to your guides really soon though , currently at 1984
:) At least with those pre Crisis era, they've done an amazing job collecting the Golden Age of characters and some Silver age. Bronze age though, needs some love.
Omar out here doing the Lord's work and helping the community to know what's up. Thanks for doing this, man! You've given me and so many other people a great breakdown here on Batman reading.
For anyone who'd like more pre-No Man's Land trades, here's a bunch of good ones that haven't been retconned and weren't mentioned because they don't influence the main storyline! I only mention the ones I greatly recommend but there are many others to pick up if you like early post-crisis Batman stories. Pre-Robin era (before The Long Halloween): - The Man Who Laughs : Bruce's first encounter with the Joker. - [Dead to Rights: Bruce putting the Joker to jail] - Collected Legends of the Dark Knight: The introduction of Poison Ivy and an uncommon vigilante. - Irresistible: a teenager has the ability to influence anyone by shaking their hand. - [Blink / Don't Blink: a blind man who sees through the eyes of those he touches becomes the witness of a crime.] - Going Sane: the best Joker story ever in my opinion. - Venom: Batman on steroids. Dick Grayson as Robin era (before Second Chances): - The Gauntlet: Dick's final test before becoming Robin. Short and fun. - Batman and the Outsiders: Batman leaves JLA. Jason Todd as Robin era: everything was mentioned in the video. Tim Drake as Robin era: - Batman/Demon: Bruce teams up with a demon and it's somehow really solid. - [Batman DOA: Bruce has 24 hours left to live.]
@@NearMintCondition I do too! I also wish they would made a post-crisis Jason omnibus. An omnibus that collects Second Chances, the first 2 Caped Crusader trades, A death in the Family and A lonely place of dying would be amazing.
Excellent, work Omar. I've been on a Batman kick lately(Specifically Nightwing which your video was awesome. I've picked up all of Chuck Dixion's stuff on Nightwing) and I'm definitely going to pick some of this up. I love Loeb and Sale's work with Long Halloween(I have the omnibus). I think for me, I enjoy Batman early years because I always love the idea of seeing how a superhero figures out how they go about defending the city. It is why hot take; I actually like a lot of origin stories, like the MCU films. Formulaic as they can be. My favorite Batman comic is a tossup between Hush and Gotham Central. Yeah, I know Hush gets a lot of naysayers, but I'm a sucker for Jim Lee's art and I like Loeb's writing. Also, I love Gotham Central because Brubaker and Rucka are on it and giving me the Shield with Gotham city is awesome.
The Matt Wagner art is SO GOOD!!! I love my trades and it saddened me that the HC they dropped recently wasn't oversized. Fun fact: they're actually updated versions of classic golden age batman stories.
@@NearMintCondition people should get omnibus editions of everything.even though its more expensive .also what is your top five recommended comics of all time
402/403 are NOT pre-crisis. Like you said, they retcon Jason Todd. 400 was the last pre-crisis Batman issue. 401 is post, about Magpie, but isn't collected..
Yes, thank you for adding that. I got my words messed up and caught it in the replay. I meant pre Year One. Surprised they didn’t start with Magpie as she shows up throughout those late 80s issues.
Still watching but you have no idea how much I appreciate these videos Omar. Got quite a few of the Batman omni's but also lots of different trades that go all over the place and make it more complex where to place them compared to the omni's. Now I can finally start reading it in the correct order.
I'm sure it's already been asked, but is there ever going to be an Omni that collects Contagion and Legacy as a pre road to Road to No Man's Land? I just started collecting omnis, mainly because of NML and other mid to late 90s Batman comics.
Hot Damn, Uncanny Omar may not talk pretty but he makes one hell of a reading order video. Thank you for all your hard work on this. Let the Batmanathon reading begin! (Would the Neal Adams Omni be pre-crisis then?)
Neal Adams is all pre crisis. With the exception of Odyssey, but I can’t even remember if that’s even cannon anymore. But feel free to read that after Year One.
All I wanna say is, Thank you!! You are awesome! Your "Batman Reading Order" is my guide and I'm sticking to it (with occasional diversions like reading Batman Ego or War on Crime) but I'm slowly slowly slooooooowly making my way through all of it and I'm having the bast time while doing so! Currently I am at Robin Reborn and even though I really would like to skip and go straight to No man's land I am sticking with an order. And really works! I get to experience fantastic stories, all the most important events, character change and growth (or sometimes lack of it) it is amazing journey and without you I'm sure I would be completely lost and expirience would not be the same. Thank you again for this series!
Volume 1 goes for no less than a hundred buckaroos rn. Not pulling the trigger on that cause 150$ is to much for the set. Sucks cause moench/jones was the first Batman run I’ve ever read.
I have a Question, so when you put your Batman books on your shelf, im guessing you put it in reading order. So what do you do with the else world storys? where do you put those in your order?
As someone who has been looking to get into comics, and Batman, I don't understand the collection of books and omnibuses. I was thinking about going in chronological order with Detective Comics (not from the very beginning), and I don't understand why some of the omnibuses are comprised of a list of cherrypicked issues. Some from different Detective Comics issues and various Batman titles. I'm assuming that they follow particular stories in chronological order? I'd hate to get a book that seemingly jumps around between different stories.
Omg I used to own the story at the start of the dark Knight detective vol 2 with the Ventriloquist. I have been looking for it for a while and you just opened a book and it appeared. Man I feel like crying as the story fascinated me so much as a kid.
Thank you so much for finally making this video! While a lot of Batman's most popular stories/comics are continually printed and talked about today, some of the lesser known but still essential stories are forgotten or passed over. This is my chance to finally see what I've missed and still need to read. It also goes to show how few of these amazing stories are collected in deluxe, oversized format. I don't know what DC is waiting for. Batman is pretty much one of their biggest and most well known IP and they should make sure that these books are accessible to newer readers. Very excited for parts 2, 3, and 4.
Well I can’t get Into every amount of detail. I open up that Shondra door and then I’ll have to talk about every one of his ladies. Jack I was saving for a Robin walkthrough. But I know what you meant.
I love Batman from Year one to flash point as much as the next person, but I get agitated when some people feel like that's all they should read. Batman from 1970-1986 is good too. 1940's Batman is fun, not a great read, but fun to visit.
I used to have the first 4 golden age omnibus. While I read them I realized that I wasn’t enjoying them at all. So I sold them. I then moved on to silver age and it wasn’t for me. It was different than what Marvel was doing during that era. But if people enjoy those stories, more power to them.
@@NearMintCondition Yeah Like I said, not a good read, but fun check out. Batman comics in the 1970s got good, and then in the 80s and into the 90s they got really good.
It's good I think. The big reason you'd wanna read it is that the story is an introduction to the joker, who is obviously pretty important to the batman lore. You can skip it but then joker just kinda shows up later and everyone acts like they already know him. It's entirely up to how much of a complete story you want in your head.
@@amannamed_8072 yes I read it now and it fits nicely as an early introduction for joker. Quite a good story in general and it even connects a bit with the killing joke which confirmed Batman's suspicion of how he became joker.
Feel free in the next videos to do the Absolute and Deluxe suggestions for certain story arcs. Crazy that you need 4 videos for the Bat reading order! So Much BATMAN!!!!! Love it!
back in the 90's Knightfall was my introduction to comics. My little sister (she's 20) is collecting all the Jason Todd and Tim Drake stories, she has a thing for Robin's. I was in college when Cataclysm came out and wasn't reading mainstream comics, so I'm really looking forward to those Omnibus!
Oh man... batman year one it is and go from there. I'm no stranger to new hobbies and researching all the info I can find but this is next level in depth.
While your DC universe starts post-crisis, I’d love to see a video talking about some of the classic Bronze Age stories/runs, especially by Denny O’Neil.
As I would like something like that but with the Joker, in itself this series is incredible and each character brought is magic, but with Joker it would be interesting.
Guess I'll have to stick to the movies... I don't think I'll ever have enough time to read all that. Or money to even buy them. I don't know if DC sells anything in India. And if they don't I'll have to get them imported from some other country. My currency is already so weak. Trying this hobby will definitely make me broke😅
I only watched like the first 10 minutes and sorry, but this makes no sense at all!! I though you were doing a chronological reading order but this is a little bit of a mess: 1.batman year one OK, I agree 2.tales of the demon ? 3. Second chances: Robin is now Jason Todd, Already at the second robin???? 4. dark knight detective Robin is Dick Grayson again... 5.Year two: Bruce Wayne still doesn’t have a Robin, why put it here? and also, this is no longer canon. 6.haunted knight/long Halloween/dark victory, Bruce mets grayson in Dark Victory, so this should be right after year one in your order right? 7.dark knight returns, Ok, this is an elseworld and bruce is old, a little bit early for this... 8.The killing joke: You still haven’t introduce Joker and you go straight to the killing joke? The man who laughs should be first I stopped watching at this point, is just a very random order…
Unfortunately most of the Dark Knight and Caped Crusader TPB have gone the way of second chances just a couple of years later they are almost more expensive than the original issues.
The only issue with Tales of The Demon following batman year one, is that it involved Jason Todd. Would it slot in better sometime after dark victory? or right before birth of the demon?
Today I found a copy of Second Chances in perfect shape for cover price. Thanks to your videos I snagged that boy boy up. So excited to add it to my ever growing Collection of Trades and Hardcovers.
Near Mint Condition I’m not positive about it. I’ve always assumed that’s how it’s pronounced, because Jean-Paul is a somewhat common name. But I could be wrong, especially since I don’t think he has a hyphen.
These videos are really nice, do you have a blog or website with a typed out comprehensive list for a quick reference guide? I find myself taking screenshots every time you show the issues collected in each edition and then going through my phone gallery to check them.
I was asking because in absolute killing joke is relatively cheep compared to most absolutes, and I was a bit surprised you still owned the seemingly standard hardcover for a story you seemed to enjoy.
This rips! Thank you, Omar. Dreaming of the day when we get a Superman reading order as well. PD: didn't know about the Moench/Jones trades. I'm going to get that asap
I’m fairly new to collecting theseBatman trades, so if anyone could enlighten me here it would help. I’ve always been told that after Year One, you read Shaman, Monster Men, Mad Monk etc. So why is this continuity so different to the one I’m familiar with, even though they’re both post crisis.
Those are sets I wasn't focusing on since this is basically a Batman and Detective Comics order. I will say you can read all those after Year One, I even mention it in the video. But they are all standalone.
I just read two of the stories by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones, about Killer Croc and Scarecrow, in an old German edition of Batman Special from October 1997 which I had found in a second-hand bookshop in my street, and thanks to your vid I found out about the two collected editions and ordered them at once since I love Kelley Jones's horror take on Batman (Batman: Vampire is one of my favourite Batman books), and at least the story about Killer Croc was also very well written. The first volume of the collected editions was out of print but I found an offer at ebay that was acceptable. These two volumes will make a great addition to my collection. Thanks again for all the great information and I am looking forward to Part 2.
Yeeesss Batman Batman Batman now if they only came out with omnis for the caped crusader trades we can have this reading order looking great on the shelf.
Thank you for this Omar! I'm curious as to what has been collected since then in omnibus format? I want to start from year 1 but to get all those trades...
Batman Year One Batman Gothic Legends of The Dark Knight by Matt Wagner Batman Haunted Knight Batman The Long Halloween Batman Dark Victory Nightwing Year One Batman The Caped Crusader Vol 1 Batman A Death in the Family The Dark Knight Returns
So, I won't read the year 2 and 3 books since I'm a HUGE fan of the Long Halloween and Dark Victory, and I don't want to mess up the continuity. What books should I read that don't mess it up for TLH and DV? I want to be able to read Robin's full story from Dick to Tim without any retcons.
