Batman: Return to Arkham Graphics Comparison - PS4 & Xbox One / PS3 & Xbox 360 / PC 

this is weird there are sections where the remaster is clearly better by a long shot then parts where the original looks better.

The remaster does look much improved, my only problems are that joker looks way too clean and Hugo strange looks like he's wearing a fake glued on beard.

In my opinion, penguin looks like the most worked on character in the remaster, he looks so real.

The remaster is...well it's not like they didn't try like I mean they've revamping the textures and shadows, lighting effects, and other effects but the problem is the lighting is weird and bipolar, it's either darker in some spots and so bright in some spots while the original understand that even though its dark in the room its movie/video game dark meaning we should see it, I mean for Arkham Knight the way they use lighting is fine but for Asylum and City where the games are more stylized to look like a comic book it's just off, every character has a weird plastic sheen to their face and skin ultimately making it more like a cartoon. Like in 7:09 Hugo Strange on the left face looks so much better his face has defining lines, texture and hair and eyebrows that looks like real hair not ones you buy from a halloween shop.

Something about the art style changed in the remaster and I don't like it

The hair in the remasters pisses me off. It's totally demastered. The lighting lacks harmony with the theme of the originals in some cases.

Why's everything brighter in the remaster.

It's basically like this: hallways, corridors, and crumbling broken walls and floors have amazing updates in the remaster. Colors and shading effects have been massively improved. In a weird way, things look better up close rather than further away, which is weird because it's usually the other way around. Lighting effects from fires shining on walls and such are more subtle and to me work more realistically, not to mention how well fire and explosions look themselves. The biggest issues are obviously the character models. Somehow Batman's face looks very unnerving in Asylum, yet they have it looking better in City. Why they didn't just use the same model for both games, I will never know. The worst character model from both is easily Hugo Strange. The skin textures are not as good, the reflection in his glasses is too clear and should be more subtle, his clothing somehow less texture, and yeah... I don't want to talk about his hair. It's like that old toy where you use the magnet to put facial hair on the picture. It gets weirder though, because then you have clearly better character models like Catwoman. I don't think there is a single downside to her new look. If I had to nitpick, maybe it'd be that her lipstick is way brighter in color. Honestly though, the skin is smoother, and the suit looks like Arkham Knight. Penguin looks much better too, his glass bottle is much clearer and looks very realistic, his skin textures are done much better, he has some noticeable stubble, and his suit looks amazing. I think the downside would probably be the same as all the other characters, that being his hair kinda looks glued on. Then there are some mixed bags like Two Face. His scarred side seems to have more detail put into it while not as much was put into his non- scarred side. His suit is better textured, but again his hair is crap. Kinda ironic that Two Face is done half better and half worse than PC. Joker is tough for me. They took out a lot of detail to simplify his look, and I honestly don't mind it. I think he looks closer to his look in Knight, and he just seems more intimidating to look at. If you pause the video during the death cut scene, just staring at the two side by side it was more unnerving to look at the remaster, and not in a bad "that looks awful" way. With him being the Joker, I feel like adding more color worked better for him too. It also blends better between pre rendered cut scene to gameplay. The only other visual negative I can think of is the water effects. Not like rain, but the textures for the water surrounding both of the islands is better looking and more detailed on PC, despite having less movement with waves. In the case of frame rate and performance (which this video didn't show off), this is probably how I'd recommend this package: If you are a pc gamer, you won't be getting your 60 frames. You already have a visually stunning game, and you probably don't want to sacrifice frames for a mixed bag in visuals. If you are going from PS3/ 360 to PS4/One, I believe the original games were already at 30 frames, and even with some issues with character models, I still think that there is enough there that is an improvement to visuals that you should go out and get it, maybe at a lowered price. Both games as of the recent patch are both 30fps locked, and they are much closer to the design of Knight now. That is also another added bonus that you can now have all Rocksteady titles on the PS4 including the VR game.

Amazing how a few minor tweaks on shaders can improve the overall visuals. Arkham City is one of the greatest games of all time in my not-so-humble opinion and it certainly deserved a facelift.

Wow. The leather effect on Catwoman looks really neat. At least here I can actually tell the difference. Most remasters look fairly similar to the original.

Certainly some texture elements in the update that look slicker, like the rain and viewing distance. But from videos I've seen I still prefer the green hue and darker tone of the original. May pick it up when it's on offer though.

Not worth it, especially if I have to shell out for an entire PS4 Pro just to get it to work properly. I'll stick with my 360 GOTY versions with the goofy 3D glasses. ^^

5:34 shows how realistic, true and smooth graphics PS4 version is easily delivering compared to the washed-out and jaggy-edged graphics the PS3 is hardly trying to produce ! This has nothing to do to respect or disrespect to PS3 but that's only the difference the new gen of consoles have come to make.

PC is hands down the best version. it still has the same OG visuals but much better textures

Wow I love the PS4/Xbox One version the graphic is clearer and looks more realistic now that is the version on all the Arkham games I want to see come out for the switch

Awesome comparison. I just got an Xbox 360 version for $2 yesterday so I can compare all 3 versions for myself now. I like the console remaster for its environmental and weather effects and the more authentic leather look of the Batman's and Catwoman's suit. The AA setting outside looks better as well while inside I prefer the PC version.

Even if some parts looks better on the remastered one, overall the original PC version + a mode, looks better, especially in Arkham City.

Think I might pick up the remastered anyway. I don't have my old console anymore, and I'm not socially inept enough to have a gaming PC. So i'll buy it on next gen, mainly for the enjoyment of playing two games i loved! And for $25 for two games, not gonna break the bank!

I think the remaster exposes more of the flaws that were in the original as everything is a lot more clear and lit up so nothing is blurred out, which is good as it makes spotting things easier but the blurriness hid ugly textures a lot better. I think the remaster is graphically more impressive it's just that the uglier textures are more noticeable now that everything is much clearer/cleaner

What did they do to Batman's face in the Asylum remaster??? how did that pass quality control? also why did they disable the bloom post-fx on return to arkham?

One thing i do notice from both games is that in the original graphics, Batman looks serious. Now, in the remaster, he looks serious but more angrier. Like if his eyebrows got thicker.

Honestly I think this would have been a good graphical overhaul if they didn't drop the ball on the lighting. Most shots look better in the remake, better models, better textures, better effects. But in others there's hardly any shadows that add to the atmosphere of the originals. Not to mention that occasionally the models for batman and joker look more like action figures than anything

I remember finding a missing texture in Batman AC Remaster. The part after you ID your first *Identify Thief* victim, the political prisoner covered in blood didn't have a texture, well, technically his blood-stained jacket didn't have a texture. It made me laugh and feel disappointment at the same time.

The environments look a lot better ( maybe a little lighter than i wanted) but a lot of the face models look like they've been washed over. Worth an X-mas buy.

They messed up Catwoman's eyelashes and Gordon's eyes. Backgrounds are higher quality textures. Character models are generally lower quality, especially Joker. Lighting is more realistic, but that removes some of the cinematic charm. For example, look at 3:02. The shadows clearly make that enemy look more menacing on the PS3/360 version versus letting players see the whole model, making him less menacing on the PS4/One version. Overall, this remaster was clearly done by someone who didn't understand Rocksteady's original art direction, but did understand how to make things look more photo-realistic.

I'm glad Return To Arkham is an improvement over the original versions on the PS3 and XBOX 360. I have never played Arkham Asylum so that's a great excuse for me to buy Return To Arkham when I get my PS4 soon.

They clearly messed up the lighting. I can tolerate the new character models but the different lighting takes soo much from the original mystic feeling away.

Overall I still feel the original looks better than the remaster, mostly because the lighting and character models look better.

Looks to me like the studio who remastered the games tried to make it look more appealing by over-saturating the color palettes. I was interested in the remasters, but I don't really see how this edition will enhance my experience with the original titles I played on PS3. Only thing I can tell is visual enhancement; and not that impressive, either. That's too bad.

The rain looks gorgeous in the PS4/XB1 versions.

I think it's split. For Arkham Asylum I think that the original looks better because of the character models and the green tint that made everything look so dreamlike, eerie, and creepy. For Arkham City I think that the environments look better on PS4 but I think that the character models look better in the original. There's no excuse though, in a remaster everything should look better. Rocksteady should've remastered this instead of working on Arkham VR, Virtuos shouldn't have been the one to remaster this. Also Virtuos needs to fix the frame rate now!

Funny how they tried to portray that pc was inferior when it was just an exclusivity deal for consoles to have the remaster and not on PC. It's a shame because the return to arkham remaster would sell well on PC these days.

Yeah, textures are better. But the very first scene - no atmospheric effects, toilet scene - no dust flying in the air, character faces less detailed than the original. Wow.

I've not played these games yet. I did have Arkham city on wii u but my daughter snapped the disc before I'd got very far. I'm looking Forward to playing these on ps4.

My opinion On a technical standpoint: -Remasters are certainly of higher quality ( that rain in Asylum) -PC trumps in performance. Overall the increase in graphical quality doesn't compensate enough for the hit in perfomance and artstyle (especially City because the remaster wasn't as big as an improvement as it was for Asylum) Artistic standpoint: -We've heard it all before, the atmosphere and character models took a hit. Overall, still prefer PC, though I still kinda wished this was officially ported to PC. In Arkham asylum my biggest complaint is the bright ness and some of the character models, in city it’s the same thing but not as bad as asylum to be honest I feel like in city return to Arkham the lighting is darker in places that were lighter in the original.

Cutscenes and most models (specifically the joker) looked better in the original but the gameplay graphics look better in remaster.

Original looks good, then PC is basically the original in it's best form so great there, and the PS4/Xbox One are clearly the best overall with it's remastered textures and such. Makes me think if PC would win if it had the remastered version, probably. Either way great video!

Running these games at 30fps is insane. especially on modern consoles.

The remaster looks better by making the environment and such darker, but the lighting doesn't feel right, and feels too bright imo. It just doesn't really fit... a dark environment filled with such bright lighting.
