A playthrough of Sega's 1993 licensed-based platform game for the Sega CD, Batman Returns.
Batman Returns was an amazing follow-up to the 1989 Burton Batman film. It wasn't typical in the early 90s to have a good game tie-in with a movie, let alone several, but the NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Sega CD, and PC games were all good. The Lynx one was not.
The Genesis game (which you can see here: • Batman Returns (Genesi... ) is the base for the Sega CD version, and both share the same platforming stages. The CD version nearly doubles the length of the game with sprite-scaled Batmobile combat stages, some fancy cutscene work, and a completely different CD soundtrack.
Sega's Batman Returns feels much different than the Konami games, and is much more a platformer than it is a beat 'em up. It relies pretty heavily on the grappling hook to get around some of the tricky gaps it throws at you, and you get a whole set of gadgets to launch at stuff.
It plays pretty well, though the controls have some awkward delays in them - for instance, when you land from a jump, you can't immediately turn around (there's an odd delay before it'll allow you to), which makes for some annoying moments of getting punched in the back of the head. The grappling hook controls can be tricky in their timing - the whole mechanic requires some definite practice before you find yourself not regularly falling into pits, and the entire game requires some serious focus and memorization.
The new driving stages are the best part of the CD version of Batman Returns. They are just as difficult as the platforming stages, but the relatively smooth animation and framerate make for some fast and exciting moments that the rest of the game just can't match.
The driving stage graphics are the standout here, making use of the Sega CD's added hardware muscle to pull of the pseudo-3D sprite scaling effects that go way beyond what you'd see on the SNES in mode 7 racers.
The action stages look alright - the art style is fantastic, but the predominantly green-and-purple backgrounds look splotchy and gross, and the animation is pretty stiff. They look exactly the same as they did in the cartridge version.
The music in this one is top notch. It's not quite as moody as the cartridge's soundtrack was, but the tracks are more than awesome enough to make up for that. Those 90s guitars are pure crack for the ears.
Batman Returns was a real showpiece for the Sega CD hardware when it came out in the spring of 1993, and as long as you can get over the number of cheap hits the game throws at you, it's still fun to play now.
And it's super Christmasy, so it seemed perfect for today. Merry Christmas, everyone!

The driving levels were great. The platforming ones not so much. It's not that the Genesis/Sega CD couldn't better though (look at Contra Hard Corps, The Castlevania game, Vectorman, Ranger-X or even Chakan which has a similary dark style which works a lot better). They just made odd color choices on those. They're so dark and drab looking, you can hardly distinguish the main sprite from the background and the enemies are even harder to see. Perhaps it was an intentional stylistic choice since the movie the game is based was rather dark and brooding for the time, but it did pan out.

Oh, so THIS is what the Sega CD version of the game was like? Wow, it's neat! Have to admit I have a certain fondness for Sega's penchant for special effects in their games. Each platform's Batman titles of the first two movies had their certain charms, but I really dig that playthrough you did of _The Adventures of Batman & Robin_ . This one comes pretty close. Merry Christmas to you as well, NC, and a Happy New Year also.

AMAZING soundtrack! Simply amazing. The Mega CD and PC Engine CD games had such phenomenal soundtracks. Worlds beyond any cartridge-based game of the day.
@graalcloud
@graalcloud 2 года назад
Idk man SNES synth-based soundtracks were often pretty good, arguably preferable imo. I really get a magical feeling playing something like Chrono Trigger with its synth tracks than I would ever get if CD audio were substituted no matter the quality improvement. A good example of this is how SQUARE decided to go with synth music for FFVII instead of CD audio. The music just sounds amazing that way and you really get a "video game" feel from it, in a way that takes me to another world and provides a lot of cathartic escapism compared to CD audio.
@MatthewBenson321
@MatthewBenson321 2 года назад
@@graalcloud Oh I definitely prefer SNES over Genesis games in terms of sound quality. I guess it's the fact that back in the day my family didn't have a Sega CD or Turbo Duo (or even 3DO) so I never experienced Redbook audio while gaming. Chrono Trigger was a big favorite but I must have played through it almost a dozen times over the years so the music lost its nostalgic impact. Something about hearing the tracks in a game like this, or Shadow of the Beast on the PC Engine Duo/Turbo Grafx Duo makes me feel more "90s". On the other hand while I love the music to Sonic CD, I've heard both the US and JPN music so much in the past decade or so that also lost its magic.

So much of this soundtrack is mid-90s as hell. Every track, but especially the power metal boss fight theme, says "Okay, we *have* Redbook... but what do we *do* with it?" It's one of my favorite things about this era, how strange the soundtracks were. Nothing's as odd as Vasteel's lounge jazz soundtrack, but you'll find some oddballs anyway.

This game and Sonic CD were my two most favorites on the Sega CD, and the music was a big part of that. The driving stages were the best and really showcased the hardware, but had a fairly steep learning curve especially on the later stages. This game has a unique final stage for the driving only and platform only modes and the only one I have never been able to beat successfully was the final stage in driving only.

Being one of *_many_* Sega CD games that was just a re-released Genesis game with some improvements here and there. "Batman Returns" is a mixture of both the Genesis levels (S l o w n e s s a n d a l l ), newly implemented driving levels that are just okay but are also a nice showcase for the scaling effects and excellent redbook audio.

This really seems like a game that was on CD primarily for the soundtrack. I think the Genesis could have handled a lot of this by itself barring the music. The sound effects do not seem beyond the Genesis' basic capabilities. The dithering aesthetic to the graphics really hammers home how few colors the Genesis could display.
