I love how the Hatter struggled with the morality of controlling people in the beginning. In fact, I love how this series humanized a lot of its villains like Mad Hatter, Two-Face, Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze and Harley Quinn.
The premise of this episode is scary enough when you think about it and only gets worse when we get to the Trial episode, where Hatter outright says he would rather have killed Alice than accept that he couldn't have her. The man stuck to his morals...right up until they were inconvenient to him.
Interesting fact of note the voice actor of the Mad Hatter aka Jervis Tech also played Bookworm in the 60s Batman tv series. The actor name is Roddy McDowall.
Mad Hatter is one of my favorite villains that don't get a ton of love. In some of the Batman video games, it implies that he starts abducting girls and turning them into his Alice. It gets quite dark. I'm sure the comics flesh him out better, but my knowledge is limited to more visual media 😂 Great reaction, glad you guys are sticking with the series.
@@chaost4544You haven’t seen the version of Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth than. They go one step further and you can’t really go past that line any further.
I don’t really think we are supposed to feel sorry for Jervis. It’s a cautionary tale about respecting boundaries. Hatter/ Jervis is a predator ( of various types if you’ve read the comics) and he is usually meant to give you a Icky vibe. BTAS does a great job at making him charismatic with Rody McDowell voicing him, however he’s one of Batman’s most pure evil villains like Prof Pyg, Scarecrow, Zsasz and Joker.
There's one comic where Tetch realises he's going about everything all wrong, with the kidnapping stuff or weird plots he's been doing. So he programs his hat to just make him happy and then puts it on, basically falls into an endless euphoric state like a heroin addict.
The taste improvement of Dominoes Pizza, pen cap BB shooting, and your brain preventing you from biting off your own finger are the sort of normal and relatable banter than makes me love the review segments just as much as the reactions.
The Mad Hatter is definitely one of my favorite Batman villains, and Roddy McDowall's voice is so distinct and so good at adding some sympathy to his character, whilst still being able to pull off the more intense moments.
Out of all of Batman's villains, Mad Hatter and Ventriloquist are the ones I feel sorry for the most. You'd think that with proper help, they could live relatively normal lives as reformed citizens, but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way in Gotham.
Arnold Wesker does get better eventually (though in the comics, 'Scarface' gets passed down to another even crazier person who takes the mantle). But the only way to satisfy the Hatter's driving obsession would be to have Alice be with him against her will.
The1960s hatter wasn't just into mind control ( the top of his hat popped up and sent out a hypnoray). His obsession was hats, too. Really wanted Batman's cowl to add to his collection.
You mentioned Kill grave. I don’t recall but I remember there was a scene where he tell somebody to put a bullet in his mouth. The person try to kill himself. But I think Jessica Jones put the bullet in his mouth and whisper to him there you go the bullet is in your mouth. Then the person snapped out of the trance. Maybe it’s about interpretation of the person who’s hearing. I don’t know
There’s another Mad Hatter that I really really love because it made me cry especially when the actor who played him was so emotional delivering his lines. I can’t wait until everyone reacts to the episode
Having never read the alice books, and only knowing based on the disney film, I had been a bit confused as a kid as to why there was a dragon there. I hadn't known the Jaberwocky existed.
Introducing the premier brainwasher of Gotham. I always thought a movie version of him would be terrifying, planting subliminal Manchurian-style triggers in people to be activated by specific phrases from the Caroll book. The Gotham version is close, but not quite what I envisioned.
Like any other kid, I knew of The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. But learning that he was a villain for Batman in the comics after watching this episode blew my mind. He has even more great appearances in the coming episodes. The design of Jervis Tesh resembles certain early illustrations in pictures books of Alice's adventures in Wonderland (his chin is there, Aaron). I did know of Roddy McDowell from the Fright Night and Planet of The Apes franchises. His voice as the Hatter is another perfect casting.
the truth is that the Mad Hatter is one of the best Batman villains, it is a pity that he is very underrated. I hope that in the Pattinson saga, he appears he has a lot of potential to fit into that raw and realistic dark universe 💙🎩🃏🐇☕💙
I barely remember this show from when I was a kid, so it's wierd how creepy Tetch comes across now. Like, it's some "Nice Guy"/incel behaviour that I might have sympathized with back then that is so messed up to me now
To address Aaron’s question of why there’s a walrus, _The Walrus and The Carpenter_ is a poem which Tweedledee and Tweedledum recite to Alice in _Through the Looking Glass._
*Mad Hatter* was the great *_Roddy McDowell,_* an absolute favorite actor I've followed since I was a kid. If he was in it, _I'd watch it._ He famously portrayed *Cornelius* in _The Planet of the Apes_ (1968).¹ He started as a child star and grew up through old Hollywood, then to TV,² and then a ton of animation and video game voice overs. ··•●✺●•·· ¹ ─ And the ape, *Galen,* in the TV series. ² ─ IMO his turn on a classic episode of classic _Twilight Zone_ is just one of the best. ³ ─ He voiced *Samwise* in the Rankin/Bass adaptation of _Return of the King._
What a good chapter guys, from Batman the Animated Series. obviously this entire episode is much more inspired by the book Alice in Wonderland, than in the classic animated version of Disney. What a coincidence of life, right? They may know it or not but Batman the Animated Series is based on and inspired by Tim Burton's Batman movies. because before the series arrived. Before there was Burton's Batman 89 film, and it just so happens that this director was going to say it but years later he was going to be the live action version of Alice in Wonderland for Disney, which was two movies. what he did with Johnny Deep with his Mad Hatter. but here in the series a mix of both versions was made but keeping the Batman version of Burton's films. Because when Burton made his adaptations, he did it closer to the original book or novel than to the Disney classic from the 50s.
Erik: they just do the whole song the borking dog. Aaron: what are you talking about? Erik: borking dog. Aaron: all dogs bark. Erik: no, it's a borking sound. Aaron: ? Calvin: bork, not bark. Jesses 🙈 I feel the last few convolutions of my brain melting in a foreign language. The new year has only just begun.
For me, the Mad Hatter was first seen in the 1960s television show and I think that he, like the Puzzler and King Tut were villains created for the show who were later incorporated into the comic book. As others have commented, the voice actor, Roddy McDowall, played the villain Book Worm in the 1960s television show.
@@Batmobileize Thanks for that information. So while others were created for the show and then went to the comics, this character was an adaptation/interpretation of the comic book character. Still, the fact remains that for me, my first exposure to M.H. was the Batman television show.
Don't know if you guys plan on doing Justice League or Justice League Unlimited, but they are leaving HBO MAX at the end of January 2023 and going who knows where.... I just pounded thru them during the Holidays, was fun to see all that stuff that was on in the early 2000's
It's super interesting seeing the evolution of Batman gliding. It's wild to me that something I consider so iconic for the character's abilities seems to be relatively recent. Him gliding with is cape in mainstream media seems to have started with Batman Begins and the Arkham games
For April Fools, you guys should do a normal reaction to a movie, and then at the last moment stage something where Aaron appears to get his finger cut off, and then Eric just nonchalantly hits the button while fake blood is spraying everywhere.
I thought I’d sound weird for saying this but it seems like other people are thinking the same way. I kinda feel sorry for Mad Hatter. Yes he puts people unwillingly under mind control but I sympathize with him. He just seemed like a quirky normal guy who’s very shy. And, as silly as it may sound, I definitely empathized a bit with him at the end of the episode when he’s trapped under that giant claw and is fixed on the image of his crush embracing another man. I know that crushing feeling from seeing the person you like embracing someone else, let alone being forced to watch it happen. Again he makes people his puppets but just has untreated mental issues at the end of the day
While its important not to condone twisted, obsessive love especially when consent is removed, I liked the way the Hatter's social awkwardness and endearing personality was written in this episode as its relatable. And this episode is another example of Batman's compassion towards the mental health of his Rogues gallery.
Please react to Alice In Borderland Season 1 and Season 2 streaming on Netflix. Season 2 recently released on 22nd December 2022. You’ll love it. Can’t wait to see your reaction. Let’s gooo!!!!!!!!
Patience. They haven't been doing all the live reactions (My Hero, CSM if there had been an English dub release, Willow, and Doom Patrol) this week because they took it off for the holidays. All the reactions that released this week were all prerecorded weeks ago.
It has been a long time since I watched Blind Wave regularly. Just realized I stopped watching when Shane left. I wonder if he will ever return. His new channel is just not the same without these guys.
