Episode Notes:
1. Mega SG for the gameplay. Real hardware for the background music.
2. Batman goes for a lot these days. A complete US version is a good $100 investment now.
3. The Japanese Mega Drive version came in the special mini case that some Sunsoft games had. The case was barely bigger than the cart itself.
4. I am a big fan of the 1989 film. It's one of my favorite comic book movies of all time.
5. It would not be until 2009's Batman Arkham Asylum that a Batman game would surpass this as my favorite.

@Benjamin Owuye Jagun I don't think it is that out of the ordinary for a 4-meg game. The tile sets are repetitive and there isn't much in the way of audio samples. The animation is fairly stiff. The driving and flying sequences certainly took up some space though, as different types of gameplay within a single game often do.

That's the interesting thing comparing the sound hardware between the SNES and Sega Genesis. The FM chip in the Sega Genesis was harder to wrestle with, so it had higher highs and lower lows. Lowering the barrier for entry like Nintendo did is a double edged sword. On one hand the SNES was more consistent, and made it easier for composers to bring their soundtracks to life. On the other hand, that consistency of quality was often just okay or good at best. Usually songs on the Super Nintendo tended to have that "on-off, on-off" type of sound like Midi or even a player piano would have. Don't get me wrong, the Super Nintendo had some epic music that you just would never get on the Genesis. I love both system, but the ease of access also left the door open for the less than stellar developers to hide their crappier gameplay behind average sounding music. Plug a Genesis game in, and you can usually tell immediately that it's garbage just from the sound quality. lol
@Prizrak-hv6qk
@Prizrak-hv6qk 4 года назад
MIDI sequencing is what the SNES sound hardware is based around, compared to the earlier concept of FM synthesis used in the Genesis hardware. Totally agree about the highs and lows. SNES allowed relatively inexperienced sound guys to put together a decent arrangement with real instrument sounds AND abuse the hell out of effects such as reverb. :) FM synthesis required actually skills to get the most out of it and the turn-key drivers like the GENS produced very questionable results. There were quite a few of FM virtuosos in Japan, because their home PCs mostly had FM based sound and so did most 80s Japanese arcade games. FM synthesis was relatively unknown in the West through, which is why so many early to mid-period Western Genesis games have that awful driver-based sound. There's no question that the SNES could do the real instrument sounds better, allowing for some excellent, "epic" sounding symphonic RPG soundtracks. The best the Genesis could with the "epic" sound, which is arguably represented in the Gauntlet IV soundtrack, is still very synthetic sounding. I love how Genesis sounded in the right hands though, with its more crunchy and bassy output, compared to the typically more subdued SNES output, which commonly sounded like something recorded in a cave.
@retrosoul8770
@retrosoul8770 4 года назад
@@Prizrak-hv6qk Alongside Gauntlet, some other orchestral scores on the MDG worthy of mention are Langrisser II, Dragon Slayer 1&2, Master of Monsters Devilish and Shining Force 2 afaik. It always comes down to the talent of the composer(s) as we already know. Alot of quality material on system.
@ScottWozniak
@ScottWozniak 4 года назад
@@Prizrak-hv6qk "MIDI sequencing is what the SNES sound hardware is based around, compared to the earlier concept of FM synthesis used in the Genesis hardware." Sequencing has nothing to do with generating sound. It's just a way of telling something WHEN to trigger a sound, and that sound can be anything from a sample to synthesis. The SNES hardware made use of SAMPLES, much like the Amiga for most of its music. The Genesis could also make use of samples but most of the music was made using FM synthesis. Just two different ways of making sound. Take it from a guy that's been using MIDI since it was introduced in '83.

Fun fact, this is the game that introduced me to the wide world of import gaming. This released for the JP Mega Drive first but as Nintendo still had a stranglehold on licensing, once an NES version came out it seemed unlikely it'd ever come to the US Genesis. I saw this import running at a local shop and had to have it. Of course it did finally come out a year later but by then the bug had bitten and I was buying all kinds of import games and then consoles too. Thanks for this trip down memory lane SLX!

The dog got confused and I was afraid she was going to knock the Genesis over so I clumsily got up and tripped and hit the Genesis myself, frying my precious Batman cart. Doh!! Talk about irony! but within a year I stumbled upon another copy of the game also quite affordable like 10 bucks. I always enjoy this game, especially since it is based on the 1989 film which I love. Seems the Japanese developers had a better idea how to get great sound out of the Genesis far better than western developers. Of course Japanese devs used different soundfonts and custom sound drivers, while western devs tended to use the awful GEMS soundfont, games like Chakan (or X-Men 1, as X-Men 2 sounds far better than the first game) show why perhaps more custom drivers should've been used by western devs as that game has extremely screechy music, even if the compistion itself isn't so bad.

The Genesis just wasn't capable of doing much so it's a testament to the musicians who managed to get good sound out of it in the first place. Kind of like how they struggled to get decent music out of the NES. I like both systems and have a lot of games for both so I don't really have a bias either way. There were games like Space Megaforce and Axley that had some pretty good rock tunes that held their own against the Genesis so it could be done. At the end of the day there are good and bad soundtracks for both systems. I don't see it as comparing two different things. I just let the music speak for itself. Of course for a lot of Genesis RPGs I just turned the music off and put on something else so there is that lol.

@@caseyhayes4590 It's true but let's face the reality. Nearly everything from that time sounds dated now. It wasn't until the 5th gen that there was actually high quality music in games and even then it wasn't always the best. Maybe 6th gen? My idea of great music is if you play a game soundtrack on cd for someone who never heard it and they can't tell that it's game music then it's great. The best examples would be games like Xenosaga,Panzer Dragoon Saga or Orta,Lost Eden,Diablo 2 and most of Motoi Sakuraba's stuff like Valkyrie Profile ECT. Shenmue is also a good example. Terrible game but the music is great. There are many more I could come up with. I'm sure you could come up with some good examples as well. But then again a lot of people like that retro sound which is why games like Cosmic Star Heroine use that style of music.

IMO this, and the driving levels from the Sega CD Batman Returns, were the best Batman games until Arkham Asylum. It took nearly 20 years, and Arkham Asylum, to top this game.

I love this game. Outside of Sonic 1 and 2, This along with Target Earth and vectorman were my favorite Genesis games. I played it a ton when I was a kid. Best part I liked about it was that it was way easier than the NES version which was impossible to beat... even though you had endless continues!

I love this game! It was a great promo for the Genesis because it was the first console to be able to make Batman black (ok, gray) and channel the gritty look of the movie. I loved everything about the film so to drive the vehicles and swoop into the stages was awesome. I remember reading about it for the Megadrive, and the digitized museum windows and cinematics made me consider importing. It was never considered difficult but I coincidentally beat this game for the first time last week. Great video!

Great video. When I was young I only got to play this breifly and without the manual. I didnt realise I had to use the grapple hook to progress in stage 2. I finally got to beat the game recently on emulation and posted up a tutorial. I enjoyed the game and the soundtrack is top notch. Gameplay wise I wouldnt put it on the level of the NES batman , but I like that it mixes in some driving and flying stages with the side scrolling action and it has a nice pace to it. The soundtrack is possibly the best of any of the Batman games.

The driving and flying stages are very poorly done. D tier shmups. The platformer stages are maybe C- at best.

3:28 - I remember when I first heard this track on your channel quite a long time ago. Of all the old Sega games I missed out on, it was this one, funny enough, considering it's the first movie I've ever watched as a young'un. This was a great review.
