To call Batman V. Superman a box office bomb would be idiotic. To call it a box office disappointment would be accurate.

+derrick s its fools gold as they call it in the business , it will cost them more money in the long push. its already starting to, if they release the R rated version in the theaters they are basically saying "fuck it" we need to hit a certain number to pay back investors or we are screwed. they are basically killing the dvd/blue ray profits....knowing by the time it comes out on dvd/blue ra word of mouth would have killed the movie

They tried rushing every character of the Justice League onto the big screen so they can catch up with Marvel. So this movie was just a huge setup for Justic League rather than focusing on just Batman and Superman. They showed more scenes of Batman because we never saw him yet and his movie isn't coming out until the Justice League movie hits theaters first. Their huge mistake was trying to catch up with Marvel with their Justice League movie.

The biggest problem for BvS has been the extreme hype followed by a mediocre product. Nothing could live up to the expectations that were built, let alone a movie that would be generous to give a "B" rating. I didn't hate it, it had some definite good points. It definitely doesn't deserve the bile and vitriol it's been receiving. But the problem was I didn't love it either. The lesson that should be learned by BvS is: If you're going to hype something that high, it had better live up to it

Batman v Superman: Dawn of DLC movies...
@doughbafett

It's not that complicated. WB got greedy(and panicked a little after the lukewarm reception of Man of Steel) and decided to overstuff this movie instead of making a proper MoS sequel and a standalone Batman reboot(and possibly Wonder Woman) before teaming up those characters into one film. Plus they left creative control in the hands of Zack Snyder who doesn't seem to get Superman(he seems far more comfortable with Batman and his dark brooding tone). The end result was a messy, incoherent, and moody 2 1/2 hour disappointment that turned off audiences as evidenced by the box office returns. The real problem going forward is that it jeopardizes the entire DC cinematic universe. Suicide Squad may do fine. Wonder Woman should be at least a minor hit(depending on how much it cost to make and market). But what about Justice League Part One? It'll presumably cost a fortune, so it'll have to gross close to or over a billion to be profitable. Will it though following so closely on the heels of the disappointing BvS? And what about afterwards? Will anyone really care about an Aquaman, Cyborg, or Flash standalone movie when they're preceded by the epic superhero team up movie? At least Marvel did it the right way and gave the individual characters their own origin films(or co-starring roles or cameos in the case of Black Widow and Hawkeye) before putting them all in one flick.
@SuperRD96
@SuperRD96 8 лет назад
I think the reason Batman V Superman bombed is because of 3 things: 1) It was overhyped, alot of the fight between batman and superman was shown in the trailer (they should have kept wonderwoman a secret and doomsday a secret) 2) It released in a year where we have several awesome movies; deadpool, civil war, suicide squad, rogue one, doctor strange & x-men apocalypse to name a few. If the year starts off with an unbelievable awesome movie (deadpool) then everything else will be compared. 3) After years of epic Marvel movies, their style has become the norm and people don't want to adjust or see a different way. Don't get me wrong, i love the marvel cinematic universe, but DC isn't trying to do it the same way (introduce all characters then team up). They are doing it in a different awesome way such as they did in the animated TV show and a few animated movies; a crisis occurs and heroes must join forces (only meet on the battle field) and then we are told how each hero got to that point.

Take a look at Marvel Studios' first few movies they released: IRON MAN ($585M worldwide on a $140M budget), THE INCREDIBLE HULK ($263M on a $150M budget), THOR ($449M on a $150M budget) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER ($370M on a $140M budget) weren't huge billion dollar hits and the studio was making really small profits than they are currently. It took a solid plan, adjustments to maximize profits and a few years of patience for Marvel Studios to get to where they are now. Then take a look at MAN OF STEEL which had a $225M budget and brought in $668M worldwide. And it looks like BATMAN V. SUPERMAN will bring in somewhere in the $850-$900M range when its theatrical run ends and that's on a $250M budget. Warner Bros. is also on track to building themselves a solid performing DC Extended Universe if you consider Marvel Studios' low profit margins on most of their Phase 1 film outside of IRON MAN and THE AVENGERS. You have to crawl before you can walk, and then you can run. Marvel Studios has been building their movie universe since 2008 and they are running at full speed. Warner Bros. and DC Films are transitioning from crawling to ready to start walking. And once JUSTICE LEAGUE releases, the studio should be running as long as they are learning lessons now, can adapt and improve the DCEU movies along the way to be the best they can be. Is it sad BATMAN V. SUPERMAN didn't perform better? Of course. But it's not the end of the world as the building blocks are in place just as Marvel Studios had to build up themselves with their Phase 1 movies. With the unfair critics 1 billion I Don't know it's just the second movie of the new DCEU. In my opinion the first DC movie in the new Cinematic Universe they will made a 1 billion is Justice League. It's funny that all the news article about BvS and DC are bad I mean wow DCEU 1.4 B. With just 2 movies wow the bias against DC is real😂.

I'm a big DC comics fan. I waited so long for this movie. I always wanted to see Batman go against Superman fight it out on the big screen. this movie was all over the place, it didn't know where it was being headed in form of story. this movie was made to produce more dc movies for more studio profit. it bothered me how Superman and batman already, and I mean instantly, knew each other's alter ego. to me, this wasn't batman vs superman, it felt more like Ben Affleck vs Henry Cavill. they were just regular actors to me. it didn't feel like the real thing. just imagine long term actors who held those roles. like Keaton and reeves. or maybe even put bale along with henry. idk just my thought.

3:51 "How did that happen?" Well if you have an army of online film critics with a sense of entitlement and perceived power, and a big target with a red "S" on it, then they'll bash the shit out of it. I've seen "Age of Ultron." It wasn't "Citizen Kane," but man that movie got such a pass from a lot of film critics. Meanwhile, "Batman v. Superman" was treated like "Puppies and Kittens in a Blender Part III."

I feel like people WANT movies to be good these days more than acknowledging whether or not that they actually ARE. Everyone knows on some level that blockbusters have declined and movie fans, like yourself, really want to make the best of whatever there is out there. As someone in their 30's though, I remember a time when blockbusters weren't all super heroes and reboots. I often feel like I somehow ended up in Biff's alternate future where everything sucks. Compare the blockbusters of 20 years ago, something on par with T2, and compare it Batman v. Superman. The dip in overall quality that people are settling for these days is just depressing.
@happyguy650

I think Batman and superman have set up for themselves really gigantic standards which is a challenge for directors to surpass. When BVS was announced everyone had their hopes high up and expected themselves to be mind blown in theatres but the problem was that the plot was predictable for DC fans who have seen all of the animated stuff. Its always plays that way, there is a certain rythm to it. Batman is at first skeptical of superman coz of his powers, they disagree, they have a tango and after kicking each others ass realise they both can be forces of justice and then make amends.

Batman V Superman IS a better movie. It just suffers from some inexplicable bad press convincing people to not go see it. Ever since it was announced that Ben Affleck was going to be Batman the media, critics, and every RU-vidr with more than 1000 subscribers started to tear the movie to shreds before they even knew what was in it. The movie review industry killed this movie. Once the movie finally came out the fans loved it, critics hated it, and the movie review industry doubled down on their bullshit. They managed to convince enough people to not see it that the box office began to suffer. At that point it became a self fulfilling downward spiral as more and more people jumped on the bandwagon of hate because they didn't want to be that one person in their group of friends who likes the movie that the media tells them everybody hates. But you can't ignore those initial critic vs fan ratings on rotten tomatoes. What was it 27% vs 79% or something? how out of touch are critics anymore? Why do people even take them seriously?

@KurNorock
@KurNorock 8 лет назад
Leo YMD there is nothing "special snowflake" about me. I wouldn't mind if the critics hated BvS if they hated it for actual reasons. But they don't. They hate it for bullshit reasons that absolutely nobody cares about but them. They are so busy looking for things to nit-pick and trying to sound superior that they forget to just watch the movie. It's no wonder they get confused and claim the movie "jumps around too much" when they are so busy looking at the stop watch timing when batman finally shows up. If they were paying attention it isn't confusing at all. BvS is only a mess if you are too dumb to follow it, which unfortunately, it seems a lot of people were. And it isn't just this movie. It's nearly every movie. Critics hate almost all of the big summer block busters while the fans love them. Then once the movies have been out a while and made a shit ton of money, the "special snowflakes" (hipsters and their ilk) start to agree with the critics so they can feel superior and before long the bandwagon rolls away and you get all kinds of hate and disgust over movies like Transformers. If you hear people talk about transformers it is only about how terrible it is, how bad Michael Bay is, how explosions are bad, etc. Yet the movie made more money than god and every sequel made just as much. And the pattern repeats over and over again. Movie comes out, critics hate it, it kills at the box office, then slowly the fans start to think they hate it too because that is what the media told them to think. This is what happened to BvS, only the process started much earlier than usual. Right around the time Ben Affleck was announced to be batman is when the first nay-sayers starting crying as loud as they could. Then the idiot bandwagoners jumped on and after that you got the idiots who can't think for themselves, then before long you had semi-reasonable people thinking "well if THAT many people don't like it, i guess it must really be bad!" and this is all before anybody even saw the fucking movie. And what's worse, the opposite holds true as well. The critics will rant and rave about some obscure movie and fans will hate it. Then over time, the media tells fans "Oh no! that was actually a great movie, it is just UNDER RATED!" and suddenly this terrible movie that nobody saw is some kind of masterpiece. Usually some independent or foreign bullshit.

After watching it, Batman V Superman just sort of seemed like Spider-Man 3 to me. Doomsday's origin was a bit fuckish, just like how Sandman's backstory deflated him. The casting of Lex was WAY off, like Topher as Eddie Brock. And just like how the final battle was just a mushy mess in SP3, Wonder Woman was screwed over in the final act. Also, Batman's truce with Superman was as stupid as Osborn being the Goblin after his father, and then suddenly forgiving him when his butler finally says shit he should have known for a year.

@SpockCanYouSaveme

+OfficialDjSyko you are right that its technically not a box office bomb but the problem is that it cost so much to make and the marketing dollars spent meant that it wasn't nearly as profitable as WB and DC would have liked, and they are only in it for profit.

Full Sail is also very expensive and not a very practical approach to entering the film industry. I got accepted into that school and nearly had a heart attack when I saw the tuition cost. And a good some of people that graduate from there don't end up in the film or music industry. A lot end up being waiters/waitresses. And also keep in mind it is a for profit school. That means it's not accredited (your degree means nothing, any job you get is due to experience, not school) and the school is not interested in your education, it just wants to make money. If you have the money by all means go on ahead. But fair warning to people using student aid, this school is not for you. You'll spend more money on a useless 4 year degree here than getting a PhD at a non-profit university.

but for real now, i think an extended edition of the film is a really good idea. my main problem with the film was that it was obviously cut down to keep it under three hours and a lot of important moments were left out (some scenes towards the beginning didnt even had establishing shots). so id like to see a more complete version of the film.

The reason this movie failed terribly is because it's a shit movie! Seriously WB should be ashamed of themselves in creating this horseshit of a movie considering they had three years to properly develop a good movie. However, they failed. Seriously DCEU is in trouble because Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were sub par. And to think some DC fanboys thought that Marvel would be quaking in their boots because of the supposed "epic" movie that was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Shit!

I think Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will help DC/WB bounce back in a big way! There was too much going on for one movie in Batman v Superman in my opinion. I think they should have at least had one solo film with Affleck as Batman before this film at least and perhaps a proper MOS sequel first. The Avengers was popular because the characters had history and people knew their motivations better before that movie went down. DC/WB tried to play catchup and rush their cinematic universes and we got a half backed film as a result!

Simple, because Marvel is a better movie studio. They can make a movie about very little known characters (guardians of the galaxy) a better movie than most of DCs movies. That's why people are more excited, because they know that more often than not, Marvel will not disappoint
@The6thCovenant

+BrandonA RealNigga Maybe i missed something, but from my understanding all they did was create a movie that will essentially set up the DCCU and make a giant glob of a movie, with cameos that didn't take much thought, to set up for The justice League as quickly as possibly as they are trying to play catch up with Marvels the Avengers and they quite frankly started too late so for the sake of catch up they decided they don't have time to make multiple phases of movies as marvel did. So they through it all together in one movie. Then they titled it BvS to get attention and through in a little fight scene. No i'm not a fan boy, to be honest a good movie is a movie to me, i dont care if its marvel, DC, "fuck face comics" or what have you. I dont care if its about superman, Spiderman, whatever. Nor do i care if Iron is played by Robert Downey Jr. or Owen Wilson, all i care about is whom ever can play the role better and weather the movie is a good movie or not, as far as the new captain america the trailer intrigued me, but yes we will see about the actual movie, also i thought Age of Ultron was a bad movie as well :)
@blackanimelover18
@blackanimelover18 8 лет назад
Matthew MK I'm not talking about money though or even success, I'm speaking PURELY on how great a movie is. And Marvel simply is better at making movies than DC, that is a fact. DC has a few good ones, Marvel has more. So because DC has ONE movie where someone won an oscar (that was well deserved) that makes DC better? Nevermind the fact that Marvel has more good movies than DC? BTW, Captain America is receiving great reviews right now you know, and that's from actual critics. Don't be a DC-movie fantard. I like DC too (more than Marvel) but I'm not gonna blindly pretend against the obvious....

In all honesty, despite my feelings towards BvS I'm still very excited for the standalones. It's Justice League I'm most worried about. If WB would just push the two parts back a couple of years and fill their place with Aquaman and Cyborg, then we can go into JL and see characters that we already have some kind of attachment towards. Also please get someone to help Snyder cause I really do not believe in his ability to get shit done by himself.

Its called bad choices. Bad director, bad writers, and everyone thinks beautiful scenes are what people want. All I have to say is deadpool is the movie they should be taking notes from. Why did it do well. Why did it not need a lot of money to be good, and so on. I may not know everything about the movie business, but it's really not hard to tell why the movie was so bad. One of the biggest mistakes you can even use as an example is the death of batman's parents. It's been used in every batman film out there. I mean my son who is 9 even said to me dad I saw this part already.

I think all DC has been making lately are bad movies that failed to fulfill expectations and while MARVEL is making a tone of money with their risky, weird, entertaining films, DC will forever be left behind. And I am saying this even though I ADORE the dark night movies, Watchmen, and V for Vendetta and Batman the animated series.
@KingOfMadCows
@KingOfMadCows 8 лет назад
I think WB definitely had very high expectations since these are some of the most iconic characters in comics, in all of media. Iron Man was not a popular superhero when his movie came out, neither was Thor, or Captain America. Not many non-comic book readers really knew about them. They didn't have other successful movies. Even their cartoon shows weren't popular and no kids watched them. So Marvel never expected those movies to make over a billion dollars and were happy with modest profits. Superman and Batman on the other hand, are probably the two most popular superheroes in the world. Everyone knows them. There have been several Batman and Superman movies. Everyone still liked the Burton Batman and the Nolan Batman. People still remember the Donner Superman. They also had very popular animated shows that were critically acclaimed, and they're still remembered by a lot of people. Almost every kid in the 90's grew up on Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series. The Arkham games were hugely popular, I think they made more money than Nolan's films. They sell merchandise like crazy. So WB expected the movie to do much better because of how popular Batman and Superman already are. Also, the problem with the box office wasn't just the 69% drop, it was that there was almost no competition.

They spent 250 on production, plus 200 on advertising and distribution. So the total spent was 450 million. Which means 900 million to break even. They wanted to get 1.2 billion because roughly half of the money made after two weeks usually goes to the theaters. you have to keep in mind that the studios don't get 100% of the money that comes in. Theaters always get a cut that is agreed upon before release. Foreign money is even more complicated and the studio get roughly 1/3rd of the money that comes in from overseas.

I think WB/DC will adjust. I think the main problem here is Zack Snyder and the fact that WB will, likely, adjust based on the criticisms of this film. True, they didn't learn anything from the Man of Steel criticisms but that's because Snyder likely (I don't know for sure) gave them a pitch they were sure would work and it sort of did. I mean... 800 million is good. Not great. I think they'll hit with Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Justice League. But man.... they've got to get Snyder under control or get him out of there. Cavill is a great Superman, but he has NOT been given his moment to shine. His smile as he's saying (spoiler alert) "goodbye" to Lois and "this is my world" and all that is the tip of the iceberg of how hopeful, heroic and warm he can be as Superman. But he need a CHANCE from a writer and director that will treat Superman better. Batman was amazing and his solo film with make the U.S. national debt in profit. haha. Wonder Woman will do well and I think James Wan will do something cool with Aquaman. So they're not in trouble unless they just ignore everything that went wrong with BVS (which I actually enjoyed).

Meg Cooper388 I agree. Again, I'll admit... I enjoyed the movie. I did. But, as crazy as it sounds, I think WB/DC could generate some REALLY positive buzz on the JL movie if they fired Snyder, or made him a producer only, and brought in a hot director. I don't think George Miller is the right choice, personally, but if you brought in a big hitter to replace Snyder, people would be clamoring for JL because you've removed the one bad thing about BVS and kept the good things (the actors and the characters). That's just my opinion. Anyone and everyone is welcome to disagree with me, but just play nice. :)

DC had the lead. They had Batman and Superman blockbusters before Marvel thought of having a movie out. When Marvel started making movies they made them well and novelized the industry with the Avengers. DC saw the money Marvel was making and tried to compete, but they aren't the pioneers and they have chosen to make their movies a bit darker than a lot of fans expected. Personally I like that, but I have heard a lot of criticism about it as well. I think they kind of had to follow suit and make JL after Avengers, but everyone knows that this is DC following Marvel's lead, and not really having it planned out the same way Marvel did.

How did this happen? The answer is simple: Zack Snyder + WB and DC trying to rush to justice league Snyder is quite talented at directing action movies, but he was absolutely the wrong choice for directing Batman V Superman. If you wanna make a mindless action movie, you hire Zack Snyder. If you wanna make anything else, don't hire him. And also, WB and DC trying waaaayy to hard to cram and set up Justice League. They seem to have forgotten to just make a good movie on its own, not just set up future movies.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno 8 лет назад
I think they sorta got ahead of themselves with the Doomsday finale and the Justice League setup, which not only hurt the film's quality but also spiked its budget to a point beyond their ability to compensate for in box office sales. Maybe they should've held off Suicide Squad until December or January and instead released two scaled-down DCEU movies this year: a streamlined Batman v Superman in March, which wraps up with Batman saving Martha and Superman capturing Lex, and its less dour direct sequel Dawn of Justice in August, which sees Bruce learning about the metahumans and talking Wonder Woman into becoming a hero again while Superman tries to fight off Doomsday.

It didn't do well because it wasn't a good movie. People saw it once and it was enough and then there are those who were put off by all the reviews so didn't even bother to go watch it in the cinemas. The reason films like Avengers and Star Wars: The Force Awakens did so well was because of fans going back to see it more than once. People saw TFA like 6 times in a movie theatre. That makes a huge difference to box office sales. This just didn't have the lure factor to attract viewers for more views.

I was so floored by the performance of Ben Affleck as Batman that the only flaws that really bothered me were the following: 1. Lex was lame and had no motivation. Feels like he went for a Heath Ledger portrayal and it fell flat. 2. Lois Lane just slowed it all down. I don't care about her at all, and I should. 3. If it happened in the movie, chances are it was rushed with little build up. Still, I had fun with this movie and I would love to see more Batman movies with Affleck. I think it would be a tragedy if we never get to see them because of the hate for this movie.

Every person I know who saw this in theaters said it had a full house standing ovation. Even the people who didn't like the film still had respect for the way it was done. The movie critics have their heads shoved firmly up their colons. Read the reviews! They're senseless.

I thought Superman's face in the thumbnail for this video was actually Johnny Knoxville at first glance.
