So you used the C word in reference to Batman. I have known for years that at his core compassion compels Bruce. His withdrawal is not unrealistic. This whole arc informed me that someone understood Bruce beyond the cliches. Compassion seems to frighten the comic book community, I don't know why.
@George_M_
@George_M_ 6 месяцев назад
I think they underestimate their audience. The writers who make compassionless edgy Batman think their readers can only take toxic masculinity. Or believe in it themselves, a la Dark Knight Returns.
@dennismason3740

@@George_M_ - I was in a wheelchair when I went to see Rises. Needless to say I rolled out on that movie. Getting to the theater was a logistical and physical challenge. Rolling out of Dark Night Rises mid-movie was easy. I don't think the writers actually know what compassion is. A writer always writes about themselves, ultimately, and Bruce's empathy is not their experience. I loved the Venom arc. I got clean'n'sober in 1982.

5:19 To be fair to Alfred, I reckon he puts up with Bruce because he keeps hoping one night Bruce'll come home and says something like "You know what? I'm getting too old for this, there's a ton of superfolks out there - I'm gonna retire as Batman" then Alfred can think "Finally, he's come to his senses!" (Plus, y'know, Bruce pays him for all this)

Personally, I never thought batman was unemotional, I've always seen his kindness. Batman may not talk a lot but he cares about Gotham and it's citizens and it shows. I remember reading a comic towards the end of the New 52 where the children of Gotham adored Batman. So that character trait is still there. It actually reinforced my image that batman *is* a father to his boys and a mentor to his girls. They all love and respect him but they're close enough to see and see-through his shit. Personally that blue beetle comic where Jaime explained to his friends that Batman wasn't humourless he just had a *dry* sense of humor was one of my favorites. Because it came from a kid outside of the Bat family. And it occurs to me: Bruce can *only* laugh when he's not being Batman

Batman is compassionate. Amanda Waller told Terry in the JLU episode ‘Epilogue’ that for all Batman’s tough exterior, she has never met anyone who cared for his fellow man more than him. He does what he does for more than just avenging his parents, he genuinely wants to help the people of Gotham. He cares for them, risking his life every night to protect them. He does what he can to rehabilitate his enemies as well, just not all them want to. In that same episode of JLU, he sat with Ace as she was dying, holding her hand until her time came. If you can’t picture Batman comforting a scared child, then that’s not Batman.

The old adage "whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" seems to apply here. Bruce was younger and THIS experience as well as many subsequent trials gave him the discipline and mental armor to BE "Batman". Bruce seeks out and "dares" anything to beat him. He doesn't back down or give up. It stands to reason that caution is something he's learned from experience. DD isn't the only man without fear!

I love this storyline so much. Not only is it a prototype for both RIP and Court of Owls (Batman's experimentation, the cave/maze), but also it's a Batman story where he's fighting opponents legitimately on his level who see right through his gimmick and exploit his weakness. But it's also a Batman story where he overcomes that through struggle and hardship rather than luck and plot holes. And it's a story where we see him care about people, have irrational guilt, and get hurt by his own untreated mental illnesses. While Batman experimenting with drugs was a new idea at the time, the further idea it spawned was brilliant and imo that does even improve this story. Of course he would fall victim to addiction at some point if he's been trying _everything_ because he will take any edge he can get. This is a snippet of how he became crazy prepared Batman.

Casually Comics - with great power comes great responsibility - take Mr Fantastic DOWN! I too hate Mr Fantastic, and cannnot see what Susan sees in him. Plastic man, the other stretchy guy uses humor and fourth wall takes to underscore how ridiculous this super power is. Plastic man can be flawed, while Mr Fantastic, much like Cyclops, is a leader of a team of characters that are way more interesting and more powerful than him. Mr Fantastic is perfectly parodied in Venture Brothers - prove me wrong!!! 😆

Can I join in the Mr Fantastic hate? 1) He's an ass about how smart he is. Like being smarter = being more ethical. 2) it's possibly a relic of his era but there's something sexist in the way he treats Sue. 3) Doom can cure thing while barely trying so exactly how hard did Reed really try? 4) He barely seems to pay attention to being a father. 5) Planet Hulk arc was super believable. 6) admittedly I ship Sue with Namor, Namor is way more fantastic IMHO.

I know this is an older video and probably this post wont be seen, but I have to say, this was one of those defining Batman moments for modern age version. Right up there with not saving Jason from the Joker and having to live with it. It made him stronger overall, but I also think it would also define the brood push everyone away Bruce we have today. And I'm in the camp that Batman would take something, especially since he would do anything to achieve his goal. At this time, it would be his physical limitations. He was vulnerable mentally because of the kid he couldn't save. He saw a direct answer to his problem, so he did it. It's very "human", but not the kind of human that we saw with the Heroes in Crisis story. Where in that story, it was no longer about "supers", but people with problems. A comic book is about relating to the character who wears a cape, not about bringing that cape to the real world. Which would break the immersion and create a more nihilistic connection. This had struggle and redemption too, even with it's more depressing overtones about the scientist and general.

Seems like a great mini series to read in detail. I like would like to see more of this kind of Batman, the same brooding person, but not like god tier Justice League level. This comic reminds me of a Spider-Man comic where Spider-Man goes into a flooded sewer to save a little kid. It flashes forward to some scientists who find one of his web shooters he lost in the sewer and in the future he was a major iconic hero. They think he was like Batman, with a hideout, a ton of gadgets, and they make an inaccurate assessment of him. It flashes back and forward a few times; showing it took everything he got to save the kid. Battling the rushing flood waters and only thinking that he has to save the kid before he drowns. Spider-Man saves the kid and gets him out of the sewer with the cops and medical team waiting for him at the top with poring rain. Spider-Man hands the kid over to the cops and never gets a thank you. He's exhausted, has cuts from sharps objects in the sewer, his costume is ripped, and he lost a web shooter. He stands there alone with no gratitude while in the future they think he was like Superman, loved by everyone.

Literally the best detox story ever conceived/written/drawn. Sometimes "artists" get it. Tell you what: I will write a one-act-monologue utilizing Peter Parker, perhaps a few guests (one at a time) - simple set, a chair, a table, perhaps a laptop and notepad with Sharpies because, goldangit, Peter Parker can draw like an ace, anybody notice? Simple set, one or two or three good actors. I literally live in Hollywood. The best actors, I kid you not, live on the streets of Hollywood, also known as tent city. So Peter Parker is ruminating on his situation after everybody he loves dismiss him due to his adrenaline fix. He is in a cheap Hotel room on Sunset Boulevard. He hears some wacko singing as he walks past Peter's window. I will write this IF you do Peter's voice. I'm not joking. Not much. Your Joker makes my skin crawl...congratulations.

The 24 hour part might've been something added to the pills later. Perhaps only the first batch Randolph (?) gave Batman was instant-acting. The time delay in later batches may have been to help increase addiction and also to control the super-soldiers they were trying to make. What do you think of the later addition, post-Bane, that Venom was derived from Hourman's Miraclo formula? Would you like to see/have seen Batman and Hourman talk about this? 😊

LotDK was simply the best Batman monthly when it first came out. That was around the time, give or take a year or two, when I first had regular easy access to the full range of US comics and was spending silly amounts of cash to make up for all the years I couldn't get hold of them. At a time when I was still trying to catch up and educate myself on all the history the character had even then LotDK was a series where it didn't matter what you already knew. Partly as the stories were based early in Batman's career and partly as they were entire stories over a few issues, unrelated to the myriad other comics featuring Batsy. It felt much more of an 'in on the ground floor' comic than any other at the time or since. But it increasingly became part of the overall continuing Batman story. At first, if I remember rightly, by taking part in the (at least) annual crossover events but eventually syncing up with the rest and becoming just another part of ongoing continuity, no longer something to be enjoyed without having to read the other titles. I was reading all the other titles so didn't really notice the change at the time. It was still a fine series, one of my favourites in fact, but something had been lost when I wasn't paying attention. There's probably a moral in that but I'm too busy with other stuff to work out what it might be...

I enjoy a socially awkward Batman in this story then a Batman that pushes everyone away that tries to help him. I rather him have be a hero that truly tries to help people and those around him in an out of costume. At least a socially awkward Batman is more human than how Batman usually is.

Thank you for this video. When I was a kid I had the shark issue but *only* the shark issue. I was buying comics with change and birthday money and didn't follow DC, so when I bought this comic it was completely out of context. It was cool to see the story behind it after so many years. I actually enjoyed this version of Batman and read the one comic I had a few times. I liked the vulnerability, although I had no real knowledge of the drug addiction aspect since that issue barely touched on it beyond the soldiers they had given it to. I like the more vulnerable Batman who has to come up with solutions on the fly and is capable of failing over the more deified modern Batman.

I own the original prints of most of the Legends series, from the first issue to the last, including this excellent story arc. Thanks for reminding me of such a great run.

This was one of the first Batman stories I read and still one of my favorites.

I remember reading this and really liking how dark it was (for teenage me), but I've never read the first part. Thanks!

As you were psychoanalyzing Batman at the end, I kept seeing Batman’s face, still quiet, with the white eyes. Then when you finally finished, the eyes just squinted.

Thanks for recapping this! Part 3 was my first Batman comic when I was 5 or 6 - a sample from a printing company my dad brought home. Clearly he didn't read the contents - the page of Timothy murdering his girlfriend is super graphic and disturbing and stuck with me for years in the worst possible way. Also Part 3 on its own wasn't a great intro to Batman either, going through withdrawal in the cave and barely present. Wasn't until almost 10 years later I finally got the trade and read the whole story.

Yup, remember this one! Got it back in the day, might have been fourteen at the time? But fuzzy on the detail. That one and Masks really sold me back on Batman even though I was (and am) more of a Marvel kind of guy. Even at 38... ;-) But I don't feel like that is such a stigma any more, a so called grown man liking comics. Because all the people reading comics when I was you grew up and some never left their love for it behind. So we are not alone. Anyway, as with many I watched re-runs of campy Adam West Batman through the '80, and though I still love that show (got the blu-rays!) seeing a more mature, darker Batman I think was the thing I needed. And that manic Batman cover of that trade collection, phew! Was not aware at the time this was the actual Venom of Bane legends, Bane had been outside my radar. But then I think I had like 10 Batman comics during my childhood, Norway was not big on that sort of thing and my allowance wasn't that great. (AND of course Spider-man and X-Men because Marvel!) But enough rambling, I have to see if I can find this again now, off to the internets! :-D

Great video, but one thing. When you showed the Legends of the Dark Knight cover, that's the cover to the modern collected version, which only has modern stories. Legends of the Dar Knight #1 was a silhouette of Batman, with 4 different background colors, with those colors becoming one of the first variant covers.

Huh, I kinda wish the new The Batman film was more like this comic(it didn't feel that it on my viewing) or, an actual adaptation of this comic! Really interesting and emotional

I am just stunned Batman didn't have some sort of tube in his multitude of supplies through which the drowning girl could breathe. Maybe not a snorkel, but nothing resembling a tube in his belt?

Yes, Batman is a drug addict. They tried to make us forget it. This is why Batman needs a partner, like Robin. Nobody should have to go at it alone. Goblin Slayer is more socially awkward that Batman, but he has friends a plenty. Those friends believe in him no matter how insufferable he can be with his reticence and dedication to killing goblins.

Some elements I like, like batman reaching his limits and someone dying at the start. Him doping because of the trauma I think is a good motive although I would have much preferred if batman sought out means of doping instead of having them handed to him. Granted most addicts do have some force manipulating them to begin so I think the scientist dangling the drugs over Batman’s head is realistic but it makes the events of the comic feel very circumstantial. It works well that this is supposedly early on batman, a less mentally prepared or superstitious batman. The super spy stuff at the end I think I could do without. I’d say overall the premise was great the execution was solid.
