Batsh*t Construction

Over millennia, and certainly since Field of Dreams, the idea that build it and they will come has prevailed. After Kevin Costner’s massive success, it seems that politicians have taken his gung ho approach to construction literally.
Olympic stadiums, often bankrupt host nations and the skyscraper index, tells us that the world’s tallest buildings are completed on the eve of a significant economic downturn. So why haven’t we ever made the link between senseless construction and politics?
Host Ross Ashcroft went to Kakanomics, the leading economics festival in Norway, to talk with the anthropologist David Graeber about Batsh*t Construction, a trend that has gripped the world.

please make a little clearer when these videos were recorded... people might get the mistaken impression that Graeber is still with us today :(

In a cheesy way one might say he still is with us, unfortunately not in the literal sense of course. Which reminds me, recently just finished Dawn of Everything from him and David Wengrow, which was freaking great/extremely interesting and illuminating in that classic Graeber style, to say the least (in spite of its more, shall we say "unrealistic", anarchist-leaning tendencies lol...I kid, I kid...kind of). Also, unsure if it's still going, but in case anyone's circumstantially unfamiliar/cares, Nika Dubrovsky, widow of Graeber, created a debate thing called "The Fight Club" to keep David's unique way of challenging conventional wisdoms alive. I just remember the one I saw with Michael Hudson and Thomas Piketty on debt and "what is to be done" as it were. But yeah agreed though. If still wondering, for this interview specifically judging from the transcript that I just discovered is conveniently linked in the description, seems to be from around December of 2019. _"The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make and could just as easily make differently."_ - the late great David Graeber RIP

Some of these batshit crazy projects have resulted in a magnificent hi-speed rail system which moves millions across China every month. It facilitates social mobility, freedom to seek economic opportunities across the country, indirectly fosters social cohesion when people inter-mingle and visit other parts of the vast nation, and cuts down on carbon emissions per person per km. The benefits go far beyond GDP.

@@user-pi4su6je8p Yeah, I would think the go-to here is like Dubai, all those gulf monarchy vanity projects to keep the petrodollar flow going for its own sake, cuz China is at least as (I think) you were saying, investing in productive infrastructure. Lol fucking Neom or whatever in Saudi Arabia with the stupid ass holographic moon and glow-stick-sand beach, etc. Insane. Actually honestly...the moon thing sounds pretty cool albeit still transparently pointless, at least it's interesting, but of course it's all bullshit unfortunately is the point lol, gotta keep kicking this bullshit can down the road. The road we can all see ends in common ruin, but ya know, god forbid we reconcile with reality, that ain't a good business model.

And of course the _other_ direction this Keynesian sort of inherently corporatist state capitalism goes, and what I would say is in no small part key to the essence of "fascism" as we think of it, is when it merges with a fervent nationalism and becomes far less benign/impractical, ie military Keynesianism basically. Seemingly as the result of the necessity for scapegoating [insert preferred otherized/marginalized/powerless ethnic/racial group here] inevitable social conflict catalyzed by class tensions that are obscured by the cultural kaleidoscope that "weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living", which then justifies ideologically directed imperial ventures, a manifest destiny of sorts. Allllll essentially just to keep kicking the capitalism can down the road. So cool, definitely not literally insane or anything, we love our thanatos embrace into the "common ruin of the contending classes" don't we folks? Of course, nothing that Lenin/Trotsky hasn't already far more clearly articulated building on that Marx guy. Unclear how much more heightened these absurd contradictions can become at this point, but clearly just reconciling with reality seems to be off the table for the demonic arcon ruling class as they can't seem to possibly imagine themselves as anything other than walking deities that deserve even _more_ , despite having everything already, the divine right of capital.

David Graeber nailed Hilary, the Obama interlude and now the Biden term which is essentially the Hilary admin with a different figurehead.

What can we learn from the foresight of successive Norwegian governments? Lang Hancock flew over the Pilbara, Western Australia in 1952, identified iron ore sites and took possession, making him and his descendants some of the richest people on the planet. When Phillips Petroleum found oil and gas in the North Sea in the late sixties, they had to acquire licensing rights from the Norwegian government to extract it, making the country the richest in the world.
