Battersea Junction - Stories from Winstanley and York Road Estates

The Winstanley and York Road estates form a rectangle behind Clapham Junction Railway Station in Battersea, South London. Locals all call it "The Winstanley". They were built post war in a vast municipal re-building plan that swept away the "slum" and bomb damaged housing, as well as much of the industry that had characterised this part of London for 100 years. Forming a contiguous housing development the developments were built between 1956 and 1972. Many of those who had lived in the area for generations were re-housed on the estate and new communities moved in, particularly from the 1960s reflecting immigration into London.
This film focuses on the experiences of those moving on to the estate, the area before the estates were built, bringing up children, fighting for improvements to housing - that in some cases was badly built and poorly designed, but also was a big improvement on their previous housing.
More recent arrivals came to live on the estate as their first home in London from the Caribbean and Indian sub-continent and, more recently, from Somalia. The film focuses on their daily lives and how they changed as the estate gradually expanded and became "notorious" in some quarters for crime, alienation and anti-social behaviour. The film stars local people speaking about their own experiences and history. The area is set for another huge change with the regeneration project planned making this a crucial time to record the history of those living there.
The film was made by Year 6 children from Falconwood Primary School and digital:works.

My dad was caretaker at Penge House, on the York Road Estate, from 1968 to 1974, when we moved out of London. We lived at 2, Penge House in Wye Street - which is right behind the girl in the first minute of the film. Our flat overlooked Falconbrook School. I remember, as a boy of 12, seeing Edward Woodward and Oliver Reed when they came to film 'Sitting Target' on the Winstanley Estate. Sporle Court featured a lot in that film. I'm in the crowd in the scene where Ollie Reed jumps over the wall, runs across the road in front of a fire engine, and dives into the back of a van. I got their autographs at the time, on sheets of Babycham notepaper from The Meyrick Arms, and still have them. Good times. Dad's local was 'The Carnival', beside Chesterton House. I spent many evenings standing outside that pub with a Coke bottle and straw and a packet of Golden Wonder crisps. The Duke of Westminster in York Road was another of dad's watering holes. That Battersea is long, long gone. Dad was Stan Marman if anyone remembers him. His boss was John Wenham at Chesterton House. Other caretakers were Alan Easter at Scholey House, Ralph at Holcroft, and John Witham at Pennethorne House.

Superb - well done Falconwood year 6 and truly professional piece of work. I did not live on these estates but was a Housing Officer there in the early 1980s and then again in the late 1990s. Unfortunately, like many such estates, these developments had good ambition but the quality of construction and subsequent maintenance was not very good. The Right to Buy and cuts to all budgets delivered a further, serious blow. The evidence is clear that the current lack of affordable housing is due to successive governments since 1980 refusing to allow Local Authorities to build housing. They still won't even let LAs borrow to build, which is very sad. One specific point I'd like to pick up, because I was there at the time, the asbestos problem on the Livingstone Estate was much worse than on the Winstanley or Alton Estate (where I was Special Estates Officer for four years). They all had asbestos present, it was ubiquitous in all construction at that time. However, the asbestos on the Livingstone was Blue Asbestos, the most dangerous form of asbestos. Other types of asbestos whilst potentially dangerous if breathed in, require exposure over a prolonged period of time. Blue asbestos has the potential to kill in small doses and pretty well every block on the Livingstone had blue asbestos in it somewhere, often in the communal areas.

Totally forgot it was a primary school that filmed this documentary. Just goes to show that we all have, or at least we had a sense of community and belonging. A lot of the so called crime is blown out of proportion by the media, whether mainstream or through niche means. I live in Sydenham Hill, in the Borough of Lewisham, and while South London has its ups and downs, we still have a community of people who are good. There's a lot I would like to say, but it'll be too much for people to read so I'll leave it here. A well-done documentary on the people of an estate.

It’s called Clapham Junction because the investors of the railway at the main junction when it was built didn’t want their name associated with grubby, industrial Battersea, Clapham (SW4) only a mile and a half away was very affluent so they went with Clapham Junction. Confusing non locals ever since.

For much of the time I lived there - 1968 to 1974 - the area between Wye Street (behind Penge House) and York Road was a derelict site (now York Gardens). We used to play some games there! Well done on your fantastic work😀 Webster court 73/78 Falcon brook/Spencer park I've lots of good memories from my childhood from there, penny for the guy outside the rose and crown, Jaws and Star Wars and Easter parades and doing early morning milk rounds for 50p, bunking off school and going to watch helicopters at Westland heliport And poor Arthur but those underground garages were dark and scary a lot bad things happened there. We moved out before they knocked the garages down.

Firstly I have heard of Battersea Junction, Clapham Junction Yes. One guy says the Winstanley was posh, most people would far from call it posh, maybe when it was first built it may have been but when I knew it from the 70s it was rough and not a place you would want to move to. A lot of lads who lived on the Estate went to the same school as me Spencer Park in Wandsworth

I meant to type "never heard of Battersea Junction". I have never heard anyone call it Battersea Junction. Originally the ground floor of the York estate blocks were not bricked up. They were open so you could walk right underneath the building to reach the lifts and the staircases and as a general shortcut. The ground floor also had sheds before the entire thing was bricked up to create ground level accommodation. Extra accommodation aside the bricking up exercise made the buildings look extra ugly.

4sure there's no doubt policing reasons had its say. Battersea/Junction was a career criminal heaven. Even when criminals where locked up in prison there were so many who grew up together imprisoned in the same jails at the same time it was like home from home.

Politicians and the councils go on about young people getting into crime, without realising they created it by stripping all of us of whatever fun there is. I'm not surprised now that we are addicted to our phones and crime has steadily increased. But let's not forget about the positive moments. 🙂🙂

I lived in Penge House from 1968 to 1974, and my dad, Stan, was the caretaker. The head caretaker, John Wenham, lived in Chesterton House. Then there was Alan in Scholey House, Ralph in Holcroft House, and John Witham in Pennethorne House. York Gardens back then was just a derelict site, and we used to go over there and build dens. Happy times. Sure, there was trouble - but nothing like as extreme as the media liked to make out. We kids played outside all day without a problem. I saw that our old flat in Penge House (which we had rent-free as dad was the caretaker) was recently up for rent for £600. Not bad... until you consider that that was PER WEEK! You'd have to have a serious income to afford that. It's obscene - and sad to see. Everywhere I've lived throughout my life - born in Putney, grew up in Battersea, a few years in my late teens in Devon, and Herne Bay ever since - they've all been taken over by the wealthy, pushing a lot of the lower-income people like myself either to the margins or well beyond.

The changes and price rise, destroyed my heart for battersea end of, don't think any of you understand on how much. Its still going on around those who are there now, but one day it will be all the rich gated off, and guess what real people will be relocated to outside of london. True People actually have heart in their area, Rich people have no heart in where they live, all they think about is dollor and CCTV, cause really the rich are very frighten of the people who struggle, as we are tougher than them, cause they have never had to really work for a pound note. And when it comes to a crunch the rich will run. just saying
