Battery change for a Jazzy wheelchair. ONLY USE GEL BATTERIES IN THESE

It depends on what is wrong with it. but when it comes to these electric wheelchairs I would just buy a new battery, these are inside a lot and the user is sitting right over the battery.

I would call it a rear drive unit. there are version with larger wheels closer to the front and I think they are called mid drives by some people.

There are other types of batteries that will work with it. I even read that there is a version of lead acid that will work, but not the kind you would use with a lawn mower. I just say Gel because they are very safe for these and that is what this machine came with new. Just verify that the battery you have will work with it and use a matching set ( don't put an old battery in with a new one, is can work, but it is not a good idea )

@@fromcarstocomputers7261 My Jazzy wheel chair came with the lead glass mat batteries direct from Jazzy. My repair technicians keep wanting to put in the jel batteries. I think they perform poorly compared to the glass mat ones. I used to be able to go 8 miles on a full charge until they started putting in the jel batteries. 4 miles top...and I had to carry the charger every where I went. They insisted the jels were the only kind I could use and that is what came with the chair. I had to dig and find the original delivery ticket to prove to them lead acid batteries came with the original delivery on the chair. I finally won that argument but it took me 4 years of jel batteries to finally get a nice set of lead acid ones again. They are so mad that I went against their wishes that they now make me wait a whole year for a wheel chair repair. Then when they do that it kills the batteries I have cause the chair is sitting 12 months without use. Dicks.

@@weatherednboston Yes I have always thought that "some" lead acid batteries would work well in these but this one had the gel's in it and on the internet they say that Gel's are what one should use because lead acid batteries can leak out fumes while charging. So I just went by the guidelines while making the video. I do not know about how their service plan works but I would guess that they get a commission on selling those gel batteries.

Do not let your gel battery go all the way down. and do not just top it off to keep it full every night, wait until it gets to 50% or below before charging, but again don't let it get all the way down. Not sure.....but do make sure the breaker switch is reset ( that's is the small button right above the footrest and on the plastic body of the unit ) also make sure the wires from the control are getting a good connection and look for damage along the wires

Not sure, but I would think you could..but with that said, if it has sat for along time with a dead battery then chances are it would not really hold much of a charge again.

Yes...but as a side note, you can get acid batteries for these but these are not the same kind that you would use in a lawnmower. So you could look up the Jazzy 6 and find an acid battery if that is what you want. Gels cost more but are safer

You can use the same charger but there is a difference. A slight difference if you look at the specs. It will affect the life of the batteries. I learned that the hard way.

I watched my new batteries being put on without removing the seat. It was a tight fit because the new gel batteries were taller than the old batteries, but he did it. I didn't know the seat would come off until I saw it in this video.

Plain lead acid batteries should not be used because they are not designed to be discharged like that. Only use AGM or GEL.

Yes, you can do it. probably better than I did but remember to let the batteries get a good charge before using the chair.

Yes, most of the time people sell these with dead batteries I will be uploading a new video on these in a couple of weeks. In the video I will try to go over all the adjustments and settings. Yes, They come off very easy. I was trying to pull the lever up and all it needed was for me to push it forwards

NO... be warned. Not all jazzy chairs can be removed. I have an early one which I had to cut the seat off and weld a modification in. The seat is now removable, but not as easily as the one in this vid. ,

What is the name of the battery that you put in? Im a 60 year old female with limited mobility from a stroke, and I wIll try my best to fix it. I’m going to try to look for a pair on Amazon. Any battery name suggestions since you stated the batteries should be gel? Thank you so much.

No each battery has it's own connection, you do not cross one batter over to the other one.

Actually, although each battery has its own cables, the cables are designed in such a way that you are actually connecting them in parallel. This guy obviously knows nothing whatsoever about electronics. How else will you get 24 volts out of 2 12volt batteries? They have to be in parallel.

@@paullee5573 yes I also believe it turns into parallel on up under the cover. But the reason I don't mention it happening at the batteries is because I don't want people to actually do that. I don't want them crossing the wires thinking that the parallel happens there like it would on something like a old semi truck battery when they had four of them something along them lines. These are set up to be straight negative positive on battery negative positive on the other. So as far as the general public is concerned it standard. The parallel again happens on up under the cover

Find your model and get a new charger, you do not want to chance it. Now if he has altered the wheelchair itself............ I would not use it also if the batteries only charge to 50% then it is time to think about buying new ones. but not lawn mower batteries.

@@fromcarstocomputers7261 I plugged them into an outlet I knew for certain worked and they started charging. The outside electrical outlets appear to be having issues. The batteries were brand new and fully charged out of the box. This was the first time I had used them. They had gotten down to 50% so I was going to charge them overnight. It's all good now. 👍

The original batteries were gel. So you would need to use Gel. Yes they cost but are safer for these

No, but there is a good chance that I will have it up for sale shortly for around 500.00 just to clear up space in my guest room in the house.
