Hi Guys;
In this short video tutorial, I'm going to walk you through the steps on cleaning a small battery operated clock. These little 3 or 4 inch clocks are common in wall clocks, desk clocks and many other places.
More information can be found at the article on are website...
myjewelrybench...
They are not always the same, so make note of that. I have a lot of customers who come in with a clock they purchased that broke, and a new little movement that doesn't fit. We usually have to modify these, or we order the correct one for the customer. Sometimes, they can be cleaned and made to work again...
Chick this video out to see how we do this...

But you are not "fixing", just "assemblying". You didn't show WHICH PROBLEM the clock had to begin with.

Thank you much, going to give this a try. I have 2 clocks that have the "only work horizontally disorder". One is a cheapy from Target, maybe $4.00 and the other is a discontinued glass clock that I love from IKEA. I will do what you did with the cheapy Target clock first, taking a picture of the gears before I take them off, so I can put them back in order, clean everything and see what happens. If it works out, I will do the IKEA clock, if not, I guess I will be reading the IKEA clock from the tabletop! LOL. Thanks again for this video. Update: 9/19/22 It worked beautifully! The cheap clock is working, I'll do the IKEA clock tomorrow. Taking pictures of the gears first helped as a reference to the order they go in. I used a small toothbrush to clean each gear and get in between the spokes. Really worked out well.

Most of the clock problems are due to a battery leak. Thanks D... the contacts need to be cleaned and worse the gears too if it gets inside. Some cannot be opened if attached to the clock dial. You now have to remove the bezel then clock hands then clock module you see here. If the clock is not working, you might want to put the battery in as a check when only the motor magnet is cleaned and replace. It should spin like a seconds hand.

Nice to see someone with more experience than I have also struggles to remember which gear goes where. 😂😂😂 Great video. Got a quedtion too. Does it make a diffeence if i use a rechargeable Ni-MH AA instead of a normal Alkaline battery? I know they are rated with different voltage 1.5 alkaline vs 1.2 Ni-MH. Just wondering if this would make clock speed different?

Without seeing it in person, hard to suggest anything. However, if you can remove the second hand from the clock. See if it keeps time and works properly without it. Could be a balance problem if the second hand is not sized for the clock correctly

Thank you very much! This video is really helpful because it proves that old damaged and unfunctioning quartz clocks can be repaired and restored. So that people will no more get tempted to throw unfunctioning quartz clocks into garbage or by the side of road or street and so soil pollution too can be avoided.
@kimways8182

For anyone inexperienced like me, it’s infinitely harder to get those tabs popped off than it looks in the video. Part of my problem is the black box is still connected to the clock, which makes getting the ideal angulation with the screwdriver so much harder. I feel like I’m about to break my clock (though it doesn’t work anyway, so no harm no foul).

Not that I know for sure, but when you say lubicated, what did you use - oil- WD40? The reason I ask, I found that oil makes dirt/dust stick to metal surfaces clogging uo the surface and gears. Believe me I know from putting it on my casement windows, made sliding them worse! Silicon spray worked perfectly! Maybe you have to clean the lubricant off the gears. Maybe Peter has a better answer. All the best! 👍

I have done all that and the little tiny Gear with the magnet on the bottom does not rotate 360 degrees. It goes 180 forward and 180 backwards. Cleaned everything (gears looked pristine, only place that looked bad is what looked like a blob of glue on copper coil... maybe bug goo??? So, cleaned that off with vinegar.) @watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry 4 года назад
Great question. It is probably dirty. Carefully take all the gears out. Wipe them off or use som rodico putty (watchmakers putty). Then clean the gears with 71% rubbing alcohol. Dry them. Use a que top to clean the clock parts where the gears are seated. Make sure there is no debris. Make sure all are dry. Use a light weight oil made for plastic on the magnetic heat and others. Use only a drop or less. You don’t want to over oil. If the electronics are good and no damage the click will probably run fine

Hello Peter. Thank you for your video. I was able to get my battery operated motor in my clock going but it is slow. I would love to just get a new motor. The issue that I have is that I inherited the clock from my mother and it has sentimental value. The clock is a Seth Thomas clock, which is made with nice wood and inlays and apparently worth between $700--$900, so not cheap. The motor is nothing special, but the hands of the clock are unique and have a S on the minute hand and a T on the hour hand. I would definitely like to keep the hands. I was told from the clock parts guys online that each motor has different diameter shafts and the new motors wouldn't accommodate the hands that I have. The company is no longer in business and wasn't able to find Seth Thomas motor/hands combo for my clock. Any insight or tips that you have that could help solve my problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Mark Viqueira
