Get the Batteryless Jump starter here amzn.to/2mux4zj
Today we are looking at the Batteryless jumpstarted that i am giving a quick introduction too and Review. The Batteryless Jump Starter works off Capacitors which recharges quickly but also discharges quickly. The bonus with Capacitors is that they aren't affected by temperature. One of the biggest downfalls is that they can't store energy for anymore than a day and they discharge quickly. This meaning if your vehicle battery is completely dead this Capacitor jump starter won't do you any good. but if someone was to come around and charge it for you then your fine.

Jerry, thanks for all the work you do. I'm a little confused as to why you say these are so expensive. The one you are testing can be had for 150-175 bucks shipped. I bought the 800 amp version (branded Schumacher, same manufacturer) for 200 bucks shipped a couple weeks ago. Considering these will last well over 10 years, they are a bargain compared to the lithiums. The Sealey brand is the same booster as well and are a bargain on EBay. From the comments, I don't think people realize how strong and flexible these are. I can charge my big 800 amp model in about 5 minutes off of an old dead motorcycle battery that has been sitting in my garage for months! It would be rare under normal street circumstances to be trying to start a car whose battery is under 5 volts. That means you can charge these from the "dead" battery. That is game changing! Or carry a small USB battery with this if you are worried about a charging source. Small solar panel will also work. I would say in 90% of cases, though, you can just charge this from the dead battery you're about to jump start! These can also easily start an engine with no battery in bypass mode. They are extremely powerful. There are dozens of videos on YT showing these in action. My choice by far!

I think that the manufacturers needs to have a combined product when it comes to this tech of battery and supercapacitor to get the benefits of both. Some kind of switch that kicks in the battery after the initial cranking. Also the same in reverse when charging. This is however maybe not as easy as I think, but it would use the best of both technos. The great thing with supercaps are that they have a better discharge than a chem-battery. That is something that have to be used better in battery powered machines/systems. A couple of well placed caps can spare battery and prolong batterylife in theory. As one may see if the car could use the caps when starting and the battery only as a backup it could save batterylife. A great thing in cars that generally speaking have very undersized batteries and alternators.

I have the 800A Sealey E/START branded version of that (looks identical). And yeah, pros and cons. A nice thing is that you can charge it off a smartphone battery pack and not just another boost pack. And the end of the day tho I much prefer my lead acid 12/24v lead acid power pack (it claims 3000 peak Amps, no idea if that's the case, but the thing just cranks and cranks and cranks).

As far as lithium jumpers, I'd like to see the Weego 44 and 66 tested. I think they are the best out there. They are 12k and 18k sized and use premium batteries. They have great (5-600 lumen) flashlights and are IP65 rated for water and dust resistance.they do not exaggerate their specs and have an 18 month warranty and outstanding customer service according to the reviews. They have big cables that are a completely different design that most. I'm getting the Weego 66 to work along with my Schumacher DSR109 capacitor starter to cover all situations.

I bought a cheap one.. it started my bike after I ate.. at the restaurant. Took 15 minutes I was so full... but it worked! Started a friends car.. and it was a cheap one.. so yes!! You buy one to get you out of a bad situation.. go straight home most likely and buy a new battery. Now if I worked at a car dealership.. maybe a better one will be worth the trouble and expense. But this cheap one is cracked and it holds a charge bouncing around in my bike saddlebags.. two weeks and it was still fully charged.. the cheap one.. was the one he said was not a good one. Your battery can be just to low to start.. and you'll be fine. Plus I lost power at home.. I charged everything with my cheap one..... he is giving you the best.. and I agree with him. But down in south Texas.. the 30's is not often. Dead battery is not common either remember. So... there's that to consider.

It's worth it if you go to a lot of auction yards where they allow the cars to be started. Some of them are dead and a battery boost pack just won't cut it if you're jumping 30 cars in a day.

The USB charge abilitiy could be useful if the car battery is completely dead, but you have a USB charger for your phone (not another boost pack)

I has 3 battery jump starters from a well known brand not cheap, and the first time I needed to use the 1 in my partners car to jump start it failed, I charged these up monthly to make sure they kept charge and all the lights said good, until I tried to jump start the car battery was stuffed in the jumper, so I got the 1 out of my car, I had exactly the same problem, it was 12 month warrantee and it was 13 months when I needed to use it, called the company they said its out or warrantee so no replacement or refund, the third 1 is still working, for how long who knows, so I think the capacitor idea is no so expensive if it does the job every time

Hi! Is there a specification for the capacitors? I sadly did not do physics but as a highway engineer I sort of understand the operation, the energy is in the caps not the battery. I am looking to make a unit to kickstart my Mini into life without waiting an age to charge so can you sort of provide me with a shopping list for the caps maybe permutations to give the clout of a lead acid starter..... ie x of yyyyy capacitors or y of zzzz capacitors. Many thanks

Very interesting thing. Can you please test it on cold (-25C or less) engine? In more warmer weather jump-starter typically just don't needed. Will this thing start engine with dead (about 10.8V or less) battery?
@nodriveknowitall702
@nodriveknowitall702 7 лет назад
Why would you remove your positive cable? You could potentially short the "dead" battery positive post with the ground of your vehicle with a tool. If you get it removed without doing so and start your car with a boost pack, you might accidentally short the unattached positive battery terminal to the chassis ground while your vehicle is running and damage your charging system. I think the cap boost pack is an expensive gimmick for now. Not nearly the energy density of lithium, yet.
@nodriveknowitall702
@nodriveknowitall702 7 лет назад
Reading the other comments, one mentioned that this had a boost circuit. I figured it had to if it claimed to charge up to 14 volts from a lead acid battery but I didn't think about the fact that this means it could charge up the caps using your vehicle's "dead" battery. The caps could then provide the high current to jump your car. Not quite as gimmicky as I thought. If you were smart about using this, it could sit in your vehicle untouched until you needed it. A "pro" would be that you don't have to make sure it's charged. It could be made "smarter" so that it charges itself up from your battery to 14 volts and when you hit your ignition it could sense the sudden drop in voltage from your battery and instantly go into boost mode. Not sure if it would work... would more current sink into your starter or would more sink into the dead battery? Interested to see what tests you put this through. Subbed.
@bas4241

Nodrive....that is the way they work. Just hook it to the weak battery, press start, wait 3 to 6 minutes for full charge (when 14v green light stops blinking), and go start the car. No need to do anything in between. If it's a diesel with glowplugs, hit the diesel button first. If there is no battery at all, charge the unit from another car and then use the bypass function to start the car without a battery. There are lots of videos of these in operation to be found....As long as the "dead" battery has about 5 volts or more, it will charge the unit. It would take a very dead battery that had been sitting for a long time to show less than 5 volts. Most vehicles on the road that need a jumpstart would probably read in the 9 to 11 volt range and would charge these easily.

I wouldn't say they're a gimmick, lithium cells loose a lot of performance in cold temperatures while capacitors do not. In theory, you could just keep the pack connected to a usb charger in your car 24/7 that way it's always charged.

The important test would be the leakage current. How many days the capacitor would stay charged? Or are you expected to charge it just before the use?
@TomMetro
@TomMetro 7 лет назад
12vgs8606 the caps will lose charge after a few days. Yes, the manufacturer expects you to charge it just before use. In addition to charging from AC or a USB power bank, these super cap jump starters include a DC-to-DC converter that permits charging the caps from very weak car batteries (about 5 volts).
@krzysiekv12
@krzysiekv12 7 лет назад
Jerry, would you try to charge the capacitor with a battery that would no longer crank over the engine, but would possibly be able to slowly charge the capacitor? I am just curious whether this would work in real life and thus start the engine?
@TestDontguess
@TestDontguess 7 лет назад
+krzysiekv12 if that situation ever comes about I will for sure try that
@_multiverse_
@_multiverse_ 5 лет назад
Yeah, that's the point of these super cap boost packs. If you're still getting relay click, the battery will have enough charge to fully charge the caps. There's no magic involved, if your cars battery is down to 5v it'll never be able to provide the 30 or so amps required to turn your starter. But it will be able to provide the low amperage required to charge the caps.

roguesquatcher These super cap jump starters include a DC-to-DC converter that permits charging the caps from very weak car batteries (about 5 volts). Yes, having it in parallel with a really weak battery means the battery drain off some of the current while you are trying to start, but the theory is that the caps can supply current well in excess of what the starter needs (briefly).

Wonder if it will start my diesel car on a cold day when the battery is flat. First thing when starting a cold diesel is to let the glow plugs glow for maybe 5 seconds and i would imagine that this jumpstarter would already be somewhat drained as glow plugs draw a lot of current. (My glowplugs are approx 1 ohm, which would mean that they draw 12A, each for a total of 48A).

I’m looking for something my better half can carry with her in her roomy work bag that goes from in the car to work office every day. So there’s always the chance that the battery can drain for whatever reason and be dead and in freezing winter weather for hours. Whether it’s a capacitor or lithium jump starter it’s got to work in this situation.

If you're stuck miles from anywhere like that your alternator is toast and you're getting a tow anyway. Batteries don't cause your car to just die on the road, the alternator can do that. Frequently in the desert, because heat causes you to run the AC on high (more electric load), and the engine gets hotter, and heat kills electronics.

@JohnDoe-bd5sz

One difference as i see it, is that the battery is much better at holding the charge. If you buy a battery type booster you can charge it and use it 14 days later. The capacitor ones would probably not hold its charge for long.
