Welcome to Mika Along The Eastern Flank! A unique RU-vid docuseries hosted by 22-year-old Mika, in which we go on an adventure along the eastern border of NATO territory and discover the importance of NATO with a fresh eye.
In this episode:
Nature, cold and military service: Mika experiences it all in cold Finland. In Lapland she trains with conscripts under extreme conditions, celebrates independence and visits a special air raid shelter.
Finland, a country with a long border with Russia, has compulsory military service. This has resulted in a country in which not only the military, but also the civilians live in a certain degree of preparedness.
Mika discovers Finnish pride and traditions, from visiting Santa Claus to sweating it out in a sauna… all in the beautiful landscape of Rovaniemi, Lapland. Discover Finland and its special culture in this episode of "Mika along the Eastern Flank".

The military service for us Finns is quite special. It's like a right of passage. You learn things you wouldn't otherwise and you learn to appreciate the small things in life.

A rite of passage is a good way to put it. For most people, it's the first time a young adult leaves home for an extended period of time. Also due to the fact that pretty much everyone does their military service it's a way to bond with people from all kinds of backgrounds.

I remember the independence day in 2017 when Finland we celebrated 100 years of independence. The were honour guards posted on many cemeteries on the graves of the heroes who fought and died for our freedom. I was standing guard on the last resting place of one these heroes. A 22-year old corporal who gave his life for the fatherland somewhere in the Karelian isthmus. The idea was to have man same age as the hero was when he fell. It was quite humbling to stand there in gratitude of these men.

De wil om je land te verdedigen is in Finland iig in orde, hier in Nederland zou meer dan de helft vluchten volgens mij..
@alexp7579
@alexp7579 Год назад
I don't really think so. In Finland the will to defend increased from 74% to 86% after the invasion to Ukraine. The societies are not that different but unlike in the Netherlands in Finland there has always been a threat, sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller but when it get's bigger the will to defend increases. I think it's natural.
@elliekramer1466
@elliekramer1466 Год назад

8:47 important distinction, lotta svärd were not part of the military. They werent, legally speaking,even on the same level as the suojeluskunta as they were an organization that was recognized as "common good" when lotta svärd was an "ordinary" registered association. They also were not ideologically motivated, before anyone dares say so. Lotta Svärd is not only a volunteer organization, but also a poem by J.L.Runeberg, the national poet of Finland. Lotta Svärd, in the poem, was a widow of a soldier in the finnish war (1808) which remained with the army after her husband died in order ro assist the soldiers in any way she could. Lotta Svärd in the poem is likely inspired by several real women who lived during the finnish war which assisted in keeping yhe army healthy and in fighting order.

I have lived in Finland for my whole life, and I have never visited the far north. I did my own military service in a coastal unit in the southern coast of Finland. So, my coldest night was actually not in an exercise, but a night ski orienteering competition between different brigades in -25°C. My headlamp battery froze, even though it was in an inside pocket. Let's just hope that Sweden gets in, although I doubt in practice it would make much of a difference even if Turkey played its games ad infinitum. Finland has a defence union with Sweden anyway. I think overall a military conflict between NATO and Russia is much less likely now, because there is now way that Russia can defend the border, so it will stop any dreams they have regarding the Baltics. For the record Finland did not joined Nato to reduce military costs and put the defence donw but get the backup for the crisis situation, get continous supply of military and civilian equipment or somekind of assurance of those. We are more than capable of defend ourselves and we dont expect others do that for ourselves we do it. But as a small country our resources do not last forever and we are kind of isolated island in North so Nato is our insurance our supply routes keeps open in any case.

I am from Finland myself, but srill I have a question. Why those people keep that highschool hat at indenpendensday??? I don't understand the whole idea to wear that hat. There is differencies in highschool and vocational school graduates. Highschool graduates get those big parties, their names are shown in newspapers. Vocational school graduates doesn't get nothing. Papers on hand at school graduation party and that's it. Family and relatives maybe gives something. Coffee and cake. Atleast at my situation. This weekend we have a student/work celebration day. The worst day for me. Everybody who have that white hat wears it and goes to a piknick. I'm not moving anywhere. I have opinions about that difference, so it is better to stay in.
@TheSuspectOnFoot
@TheSuspectOnFoot Год назад
I personally never liked the hat either but it's a historical thing because high school students were very influential in the nationalistic circles back in the day. The first jagers were high school graduates that snuck into Germany and most high school graduates also chose the white army while the workers chose the reds or were conscripted to the white army. Two most notable political assassins Eugen Schaumann and Lennart Hohenthal were also high schoolers. Nationalistic spirit or ideals in general weren't then and still aren't valued as much among average workers because they are practically orientated people so no wonder many wouldn't even care about getting names on papers or fancy hats. Did you bother paying 5 euros to get a beret home for nothing but sentimental reasons? Everybody I know who didn't also chose vocational school. Finland was never a country that was famous for its fighting ability. Not back a thousand years ago or whenever. They were just humble farmers, being ruled over by the Swedish, and then the Russians. So when they decided to stand and fight, at the end of World War One, to gain their independence for the first time ever, everyone must have been surprised. Extremely surprised, as the Finns turned out to be total wildcats! I guess this is sisu. The determination to go on, and keep going on, even if it looks totally useless and pointless. In the beginning, there was the swamp. And the shovel. And Jussi.

Actually some of the most elite units such as Hakkapelita in Swedish army were comprised of Finnish soldiers.
@teemup9247
@teemup9247 Год назад
There can be some debate about that. Vikings avoided Finland like the plague, most likely for two reasons. Not enough to raid and locals put up too fierce resistance. Some Finnish individuals were likely even part of the Varangian guards of the Byzantine Emperor. Especially after Sweden broke away from the Kalmar Union Finnish troops were highly regarded by the Royal army. Especially Finnish cavarly. There were also several Finnish generals and field marshals who rose to command Swedish armies. The soldiers might not have been thought as "better" (except the Hakkapeliitta cavalry). During the Swedish Empire period one third of the Swedish army was made of Finnish men. As fun side note the brigade I served my conscription, the Pori brigade, was founded in 1627 as the Royal Pori regiment. So it is close to 400 years old now. After 1809 as the Grand duchy of Finland under the Russian empire, the Finnish troops weren't maybe thought of as "special", but they were respected when used. For example in Bulgaria they still celebrate the Finnish guards sharpshooter battalion that was one of the units to brake the Ottoman lines in the battle of Gorni Dubnik leading to Bulgarian independence. And there were several Finnish generals who rose to high ranks and commands in the Russian empire. Most famous being man who at the start of ww1 commanded the Tsars guards cavalry Brigade and when the revolution came was commanding cavarly army corps. The man being Carl Gustav Mannerheim, who retired from the Russian army as Lieutenant General. This was quite brief take, but the point is that Finns were highly thought of though of course not in all cases were they more special than other nationalities. The Finns did gain most of their "glory" after the independence because then it was clear that "Finns" were doing the fighting and not as part of some other country.

"Finland was never a country that was famous for its fighting ability" Remove your ignorant comment right away. First of all, Finland as a country has existed only since 1917. Before that Finnish fought in the Swedish army, and were very well respected and in fact constituted 40% of the army despite being many times smaller population wise than Swedish mainland. And the 2WW... I believe I don't have to explain much. Struggled for five years 39-44 and defeated an enemy force of - at its best, 1.4 million men with a 600 000 strong field army!
