People idolize Hardrada for being the last Viking and William for obvious reasons, but Harold gets left out in the cold despite force marching north to annihilate the Viking army at Stamford and force marching back south to almost beat William at Hastings, an impressive feat in itself. If he had won Hastings it would have been a truly incredible military achievement.

He probably would have been remembered as King Harold Godwinson ‘The Great’ similar to King Alfred as he would have defeated two invasion forces and kept his throne and country safe. That’s only if he won at Hastings.

''Should'', ''Would'' and ''If'' are terms used in science fiction not in history! History deals with what had actually taken place and facts, nothing more and nothing less. Did he knew that he was wielding an under equipped and under performing force? Did he had less control over his men on the battlefield? Was his force battered by the Stanford clash? Yes, yes and again yes. The outcome was clear even before he started the march back south. Stating all this, it's clear as day that only Hope and hope alone was the driving factor for him.

little detail : the reason Harold marched so quickly against William, not waiting for his army to rest more and/or for more troops to arrive, was because William raided land and estates that were direct Harold's property. That way, not only did he gained loot, but he also send a message to the people of England " how can you king defend you, if he can't even defend his own property ? " Thus forcing Harold to fight before he was completly ready.

When William shows up to press his claim with swords, quite likely that some nobles will defect under threat, because William looks like the stronger horse, or even because they don't like the Godwin family's power and think their lot will be better under a foreign king, like Cnut the Great.

Honestly, Hastings was one of those rare battles that was so close, it came down to which king was killed first. Could’ve just as easily been William felled by a stray arrow. And if so, his army would’ve melted away just as the anglo saxons did. Also, to me, Hastings wasn’t William’s greatest feat. It was maintaining control of both his kingdom and his duchy in the aftermath that’s far more impressive.

The part about the Scandinavian invasion of France led by Rollo is not correct at all. Rollo was beaten numerous times, at the Siege of Paris (defended by Eudes of Paris) in 885-887, beaten by the Breton king Alain le Grand, beaten at the Siege of Paris in 911 and finally DECISIVELY beaten by Robert the first, king of the Franks, at the Siege of Chartres in 911. Robert the first was never "forced" to let Rollo take a part of Normandy. Robert and Charles the Simple, who were in position of force, made Rollo sign the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte : he was allowed to settle in a part of Normandy, and in exchange, had to baptize himself and engaged himself to stop any Viking invasion coming from the North. Nonetheless, the making of this video is excellent and highly enjoyable.

- Indeed about Rollo, but overall he won land in Francia. And since the video is not about him, going on a tangent about all of those battles wouldn't work. It's for a separate video. - It's one way of looking at it. My take on it is that they were forced to give Rollo land. If they could've beaten him, they would've given him nothing, unless they're crazy. And the fact he had to baptize was nothing new, Norse kings were practicing this already at this time even without getting any land anywhere. But overall, when someone comes to your country, and essentially takes what is yours - yeah, you were forced to give it to him, otherwise if you could've defeated him you would give him nothing.

@@HistoryMarche I understand your point of view, that is giving lands to an invader would be something quite advantageous for the latter, but one must know that the kingdom of Francia had been constantly ravaged by unpredictable thus hard to counter Viking raids for more than one century, which led to insecurity and financial problems. Eventhough the West Franks were successful against the Vikings on the battlefield, they couldn't raise an army to defend every village and church of the country. Thus, Charles the Simple saw the decisive victory at Chartres (the fact that Rollo lost at Chartres is totally admitted) as an opportunity to vassalize a Viking leader, who would largely contribute to prevent any other invasion coming from Scandinavia.

He was a usurper!! His family was Edwards enemy his entire life. Edward purposefully never consummated the marriage to Godwinsons sister so their family wouldn't get the throne. Plus the kid from Hungry had a better claim to the throne and was Edwards heir up to his death. Godwin took advantage of a senile old man's last moments to snatch the throne from the kid. He got what he deserved at Hastings due to his greed, pride, vanity and stupidity. Sadly the Anglo Saxon people ultimately paid a horrible price for his actions.

I’ve walked the actual battlefield (an actual battle hill) and I can safely say that the attacking Norman army must have been exhausted long before they clashed. I was tired walking up that hill with mere clothing, let alone full iron armor. The field had a strange ere to it. Wouldn’t have to convince me of the residual energy there.

fitness can overcome slopes and load to some extent, but its the generation of heat and inability to ventilate this in armour that causes biggest issue, even in todays body armour. multiple attacks up the slope would have exhausted troops, there must have been bigger numbers to rotate and not have the shield wall advance and envelope them, especially given the numbers of archers not directly involved in cqb. love to visit the site and reenactment one day

The channel Modern History TV did a video like a year ago titled "Why was this type of armour in use for so long?" - He's talking about mail armor and about the last third of the video is him doing his normal chores (feeding his horses, riding) wearing mail armor. Despite the added weight, it's not a hindrance at all - So for the trained soldiers of the time, we can pretty much assume that no, they weren't exhausted long before they clashed. They were used to walking/marching, they were used to fighting, all in their full set of armor - They were trained for those situations. The exhaustion only came during the constant fighting. But I can see why you were tired after this walk, that slope definitely can be challenging if you're not used to walking for a prolonged time, especially on steep terrain, no shame in that. As someone who grew up with dogs in an area with lots of steep hills, I can tell you that at some point, you get used to it and aren't exhausted anymore.

Imagine force marching thousands of evil aggressive normaltrash all the way to the north of England and force marching them right back again after a bloody battle to fight again in just a few days. Harold was a very talented military leader. His bad luck was having to go up against William.

The battle was fought in the Crowhurst Valley blocking the progress from the old port (to the left) of Hastings at the massive inlet at Bulverhithe (the only place capable of safe anchorage for the large fleet) and now silted up. The valley gave the only access to the ridge and the way out for the Norman army. This was Harolds estate and the remains of the first abbey built after the battle are still there for all to see.

Just a correction the Plantagenet while descendants of William are called that way starting with Henry II who got that name from the epithet of his father, the count of Anjou Geoffrey, his claim and his relation to the house of Normandy comes from his mother Empress Matilda.

I would like to suggest the Battle of the Blarathon, a rare ocassion in which Byzantines and Sassanids fought in the same side and marked the beginning of a rather short and also rare period of peaceful and friendly relationships between the two powers just before the last and most destructive war between the two empires.

Heck yeah. My mums ancestors were Norman, and we traced it back all the way to this invasion. The Delamore family came from Normandy nearly 1000 years ago to England. Pretty cool when I discovered the origins of my mums Maiden name. The Delamore’s spread around the world in the 17 hundreds, and my mums side came here to New Zealand.

My surname is also traced to the Norman invasion of 1066. This is the case for a lot of surnames present in the UK. Unfortunately surnames aren't a guaranteed connection to your ancestors as Common peasants had no surnames and wouldn't have adopted them for many centuries to come. But that's sick that you've been able to trace it back. Would love to do it myself

A lot of sources tend to point to this battle as "the rise of the Knight" as the cornerstone of medieval warfare, and I think this is why. They could continuously charge and retreat because the Anglo-Saxon force lacked a decisive element. The Normans could take a lot of punishment and break ten times over, but the Anglo-Saxons couldn't capitalize on it. They were doomed by their own defensive posture. By contrast, every time the Anglo-Saxons lost cohesion, they suffered dearly for it.

Fantastic video! Slight correction though, William didn't begin the Plantagenet dynasty, he began the Norman dynasty. The Plantagenet dynasty was started by Henry II in 1154, William's great-grandson through his grand-daughter, Empress Matilda.

The coastline was very different then: numerous major inlets - notably at Pevensey where the inland sea was large enough to make a safe harbour for the hundreds of small ships that transported William’s troop. Remember, a ship then was only big enough for 30-50 troops/horses. I.e. each of William’s ships was about as big as a typical middle-sized sailing boat today. And they came from a similarly large inland sea at Fecamp.

Formidable archery would have certainly turned the tide in Harold's favor, especially firing downhill. English kings would realize that in later centuries and put it to devastating military use.

He lost because he brought a militia to fight a professional army. He did take a good defensive position but severely lacked the numbers.

@@_sky_3123 Yeah, I'm sure the professional army had practiced several military tactics that William could order them to perform. The only orders Harold could give to his farmers with spears, were basically hold the line, or charge.

@@_sky_3123 A militia that had destroyed the better general in Harald Hardrada. It's because of Hardrada, a depleted force and pure luck that William the Bastard won. Not better generalship.

@@_sky_3123 1) Stamford Bridge was near a wood, cavalry is useless in a forest. 2) Anglo Saxon cavalry didn't exist. It had been tried, Earl Ralph the Timid, the half English half Norman cousin of Edward the Confessor, had tried getting the fyrd in his earldom to fight on horseback. It was a total failure.

How this has never been made a film I do not know. The story is utterly epic. Harold tricked into a promise. Norman unable to raise an army recruits the Pope establishing a prayers for power deal still alive TODAY, Harold waits and waits nearly loses his army to the harvest, rushes north to win a battle that includes defeating a berserker then RUNS south to meet Norman and NEARLY wins. Then tragically dies and not only loses a battle but his (my, our) people suffer from the worst ethnic cleansing since Carthage. How is this not a film?

your people , the anglo saxons. were absolutely not ethnically cleansed , they were harried, if you read any historical text you will know that the Normans were the ruling Elite and they took and held the whole country with a small military force their numbers were small, no large numbers of Normand repopulated Britain, it was not like when the anglo-saxons migrated as boat people in the eighth century having been pushed out by the Germans. As for ethnic cleansing, the Danes were ethnically cleansed by the anglo saxons from lands they conquered so if you want to discuss ethnic cleansing by anglo saxons start there and continue ....

Mongolia didn't exist at that time, Khazars were just a turkic tribe. Mongolia attacked Russia and conquered it in the 13th century long after Svyatoslav :D Mongolia became Mongolia only after Ghengis Khan united the different tribes. Khazars were Turkic yes not really Mongol. It's like saying the whole central Asia countries are Mongols like Uzbekistan etc... Some now might have more Mongol blood but only after the Mongol invasions of 13th century not during Svyatoslav.

It seems ridiculous how often people fall for it. Esspecially when they fought people like the Huns, who were litterally renowned for their success at that strategy. But that's because we watch from a birds eye view. Not from human height. In the midst of all that chaos. And, if one group are routing, its very easy to push, and get the entire army routing, even if they're winning, because people panic. So a soldier sees them fleeing, thinks 'yeah we got this. lets them get and make everyone run!' Then they turn around and you realize how badly you fucked up

I'm glad a video of this battle was made because we studied this in my English School in Kuwait as being the last year in which England was invaded. I studied this in Grade 7.
