South Carolina played a key role in the American War for Independence. In 1780, the British launched their Southern Campaign by taking the city of Charleston. When they moved into the back country they began losing key battles including the Battle of Kings Mountain which proved to be a turning point in the war.

My 6th great grandfather was Dr Johan “martin” Shultz . He was an Overmountain man and one of the only doctors serving for either side at the battle of Kings mountain. He performed amputations after the battle with very little supplies and only whiskey for comfort for the pain .

This is a wonderful, informative, and engaging video. Having hiked this particular field of battle scores of times, I can attest to both the general accuracy of the historical narrative and the extraordinary natural beauty of King's Mountain. Unlike many historical sites from the American Revolutionary War (1775 -83) and its Civil War (1861-65), the Revolutionary War historical sites throughout South Carolina, in particular, are remarkably well preserved (e.g., Cowpens, King's Mountain, Ninety-Six, etc.) and largely unaffected by urbanization.

This war could be known as the first American Civil War, brother vs brother, son vs father. Case in point. One of my ancestors marched with Colonel William Polk, Colonial officer. His father marched with Major Patrick Ferguson. He was one of the loyalists who was captured by the militia at the battle of Kings Mountain. The video does not mention, after the battle the prisoners were taken to Gilbert Town, North Carolina, where on October 10, 1780 a trial was held and 36 prisoners were found guilty and sentenced to hang. Of the 36 only 9 were hanged before Colonel Campbell stopped the proceedings. As luck would have it one of the 9 prisoners hanged was my ancestor.

fascinating. I have done deep dive research on this this. My 6th Great Grandfather Lt. Colonel James Steen was escorting many of the prisoners back to NC after this battle. Several escaped before being hanged. It was brutal punishment and there was a lot of blood thirst between loyalists and Whigs.

I have an 1823 Salem Gazette newspaper and in the obituary a gentleman by the name Andrew Buntin fought under Shelby at King's Mountain.

My 6th Great Grandfather served here with his brother under the command of Col. Benjamin Cleveland. His brother was killed and my 6x great grandfather was wounded. He was hit under the shoulder blade. Obadiah Benge was his name. As for his brother I’m still looking for his name.

I laughed when it said "near Blacksburg, just across the north Carolina line"..... Just say it's in NC, they tried hard with the name and that description of location to make the viewer think it's in SC I'm from shelby NC, same county as kings mountain

@@ThirteenAmp ... You are absolutely incorrect... There is a town in North Carolina named after this South Carolina battle called Kings Mountain... But, the actual battlefield is well inside the boundary of South Carolina... It's not even as close to the boarder of North Carolina as some think... I could take you to the National Parks Service Kings Mountain National Military Park and it and the actual battlefield are unmistakably definitely in the state of South Carolina! Look it up on Google maps and you will see that there's not one inch of the Kings Mountain National Military Park or the battlefield anywhere reasonably near North Carolina... Now, the state line isn't too very far away but there is no mistaking that the Kings Mountain Battlefield is absolutely well within South Carolina!
@vickytabbot4300

It's not in North Carolina! The town named after the Battle is in North Carolina but the Kings Mountain National Military Park and the actual site of the Kings Mountain Battlefield is in South Carolina! You don't even go into North Carolina to get to the battlefield... The Kings Mountain National Military Park is in South Carolina and Kings Mountain State Park is right next to it and it's a South Carolina State Park... Visit both and you will see that they are both in South Carolina!

Ethan..... Read some history. The town kings mtn nc and kings mtn battlefield are two different places. And the town in nc is named after the mtn in sc , just a few miles southeast of the state line. I suspect you have never been to the true KINGS MOUNTAIN..... ☹️
@dallasreese8416

However, according to officers, battle reports, soldiers' pension statements, and archaeological evidence, the battle was fought in SC and the battlefield park is in South Carolina. We're not talking about the town here, it's the actual mountain where the battle was fought.
