During the First Civil War Lord Byrons Royalist Army (the Cavaliers) laid siege to Namptwiche (as it was known at that time) which was held by the Parliamentarians (the Roundheads). The Battle of Namptwiche was fought on the 25th January 1644 after the arrival of renforcments in the form of the Parliamentarian Army lead by Sir Thomas Fairfax, the loss of Nantwich was a major setback for KIng Charles 1 especially after several other losses in the area. After the long siege the towns folk of Nantwich were said to be very relieved and named the day Holly Holy Day which they celebrated each year by wearing Holly sprigs in their hair or hats. The re-enactment by The Sealed Knot Society takes place on the nearest Saturday to the 25th Jan on a grassy area known as Mill Island very close to the town center, however the true place of the battle was to the west in the Henhull and Acton Church area (musket holes can still be seen in the church walls) its a short walk out of the town along the canal towards Acton, where you can find an information board on the top of bridge 93 (Acton Bridge).
