Historical account of the Battle of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo-Zulu Wars. Fought on the same day as the dreadful battle of Isandlwana, learn how this vastly outnumbered British garrison managed to hold out against a numerically superior force of brave Zulu warriors Complete with animations and footage from the films Zulu (1964) and Zulu Dawn (1979).
If you'd like to learn more about how the Anglo-Zulu Wars started then check out my video on the battle of Isandlwana, where I cover it in more depth. The link is in the beginning of the description. Hope you enjoy!

Hi to you. and thank you for using footage from the film Zull with Michael Caine and Stanley Baker also Ula Jacobson and Jack Hawkins. In 1963 I served in the 5th South African infantry in Ladysmith Natal and our company was assigned to be extras in the film under the directorship of Cy Enfield who had just completed the filming of 'Cleopatra' and 'The Longes day.' According to Color Sergeant Bourne (who was only 24 years old at the time of the action), none of the fatalities were as a result of edged weapons. The Zulu's had salvaged several hundred Martini's from the Isandlwana battlefield and fired on the defenders from a overlooking bluff several hundred yards away. They didn't know how to adjust the elevation on the rifle sights, so most of the fire was ineffective, but of those who died, all were as a result of gunshot. Rorkes Drift was a supply base, they had massive amounts of ammo and were wise enough to unpack prior to the Impi's attack. The loss at Ishandlwana was due to many factors, but the poorly managed ammo distribution was key.

@@historyradar9654 Dear History Radar, do you by chance, know anything about the battle of Little Big Horn, which I believe was also known as Custer's last stand? Is there any truth in the rumour, that he was a born Indian, or if you prefer, Native American hater? Were the tactics of Sitting Bull, whom I am sure he was fighting, similar to those used by the Zulus, in the battle of Isandlwna? Thank you.

Really fantastic video! I really like seeing someone provide an animated map of an engagement to highlight the movements of the combating forces. Will you be doing the Battle of Legnano or the Battle of Groton Heights? Both were intense engagements which pitted a professional army (The Holy Roman Empire at Legnano, the British Empire at Groton) against rebel militias (Milanese-led coalition and Connecticut militia). And, though only the first engagement was a victory for the rebel force, the second being a defeat, they were quite remarkable turning points in history. For without Legnano, Italy would not have been able to keep living a semi-independent existence within the Holy Roman Empire and Groton cost the British Army not only a sizable portion of the troops committed, but was also a drain of resources from relieving Cornwallis in Yorktown.

For film footage, would recommend the 2004 movie "The Alamo" accurately portrays the battle - the 1960 John Wayne version is awesome, but it depicts the battle during day-light hours, whereas the actual battle took place in early morning darkness.

You left out how the real cavalry were actually Tswana riders from Bechuanaland, not Boers. Likewise missing were facts such as that the real Hook was very religious and the polar opposite of the rogue of the film (his family sued and won a massive settlement for the time, rivalling after inflation the Hamer family lawsuit against "Bonnie and Clyde" in 1967 and the Baer estate versus "Cinderella Man" in 2003 after the release). He's often compared to Desmond Doss in the US army during the Battle of Okinawa. Then also the chaplain was completely left out, even though he took over ammo and ration distribution after the death of the cook. He was the first to repudiate the idiocy of Rev. Witt and later was recommended for the Cross, but didn't get it. It's an interesting story.

Almost every engagement at the start of the War was a Zulu Win.The British were spread out over a large area at the start of the invasion and Zulu mobility allowed then to counter,almost like Napoleon in 1814.Only ended when the British launched one stonking attack at the Capital,and forced the Zulu into a concentrated battle.Rorke’s drift,however,heroic,was a minor,face saving,event for the British.

Disraeli should have known who the zulus were as he'd casually ordered Bartle Frere to totally upend their society. Without diminishing their bravery the zulus won one battle because Chelmsfords subordinates crazily dispersed rather than concentrated their companies which is why he rightly maintained he'd left sufficient men to deal with the main force should it attack.

Very true, however Rorke's Drift was on the British side of the border so the Ulundi Corps had invaded Natal against their Kings orders which gave the British a good excuse to launch a second invasion.

you're brainwashed, in the 19th century it was planting the flag and it was yours. The Zulus took over Africa from other indigenous people. Just go to Zimbabwe and you see the crop growers in conflict with the cattle herders. Shona and Matabele conflicts were ongoing before Europeans were there. There was no such a thing as invading during the colonial era.

As I believe, there was something you never mentioned, the British couldn't open their ammo boxes in time, due to the boxes being screwed down! And with all of the smoke from the Cordite, would have made battle conditions almost impossible! That is how the British got hammerd by the Zulu. You see, they could see from their side, but the British couldn't see a thing! Maybe this can tell you how the British got beat?

The Zulu's had between 500 and 1000 muskets and rifles at the battle including Martini Henry rifles(and significantly more ammunition), so even at the low estimate simply with guns they out numbered the British 3 to 1 and 30 to 1 overall, those aren't great odds any way you look at it.

The Zulus were defending their home land.Sir Henry Bartle Frarrer issued an ultimatetum to the Zulu King to disband his army. Frarrer at the time was the representative of the UK government in South Africa it was the provocation the British were looking for .At the mountain slopes of islandwana February 1879 1,500 British troops were put to the spear by a force of around 30,000 warriors after which the mission station at Rorkes Drift became the focus of another battle. However this time Zulus were not so triumphant.

@davidpallin772
@davidpallin772 3 года назад
I doubt that very much. Gatling gun only effective for straight ahead fire, really can’t traverse fire with it. The Zulu’s on the other hand were highly mobile an unemcumbered could easily avoid the Gatling. Could the Gatling been of help?, yes but only for awhile. The British were simply overwhelmed and scattered about. In hindsight, their only chance would have been to form a tight British square from the onset, that was the only card they had left to play.
@JamesWillmus
@JamesWillmus 3 года назад
Those things jammed constantly and required a couple of men to operate and several more to transport. A solid line of cannons with grapeshot would have turned the Zulu's front lines into swiss cheese. More cavalry also would have been effective in flanking the Zulu. But the British were primarily an infantry force so once spread out over a large area they were vulnerable to being over run.
