Chasing them off after 1st Punic war wont only made the senate lose people's support, but also made them loss the rich Iberian peninsula. They only managed to chase off Hannibal and the Barcid from Carthage after The 2nd Punic war as they basically made the Barcid took all the blame for their own errors. @HistoryMarche
@HistoryMarche 2 года назад
Indeed. I've discussed this previously, but he had a better chance of attacking Rome after Trasimene, in 217. If he could've connected with the Carthaginian fleet that was nearby, the Roman garrison in the city was much smaller, he was very close to the city, and Rome didn't have an army nearby to aid the capital. Alas...

It probably would have been better for Hannibal to unite with the Boi in northern Italy and first clear out all Roman resistance in the area. Once done, it would have been too late to march on Rome but at least plans and logistics could have been organized prior to an assault on Rome in the next campaign season. By then, it would have been a lot easier to surround Rome and have your Northern supply lines be secured.

OMG finally I love you. Please finish this series . I am starved for Punic war content. I love reading Roman historical fiction but there isnt much there about early Republic.

There is a historical fiction series on Scipio Africanus which includes all the events of the second Punic war , only available in Spanish right now though. The first book is called : "Africanus: el hijo del cónsul" by Santiago Posteguillo It's really good if you can read spanish
