.SYNOPSIS
Vice-Admiral Ralph Hennessy (Assiniboine) and Hellmut Liebold (U-210) tell the story of a dramatic and deadly confrontation between the Canadian destroyer escort HMCS Assiniboine and the German U-Boat U-210 on August 6, 1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic. Sadly both men are now deceased.
The film features first hand accounts of what took place on each of the vessels during the battle. We are thrilled to have interviews with Vice-Admiral Ralph Hennessy, RCN retired, who was Executive Officer on Assiniboine at the time, and Hellmut Liebold, who was the radio operator, and youngest crew member (age 19) on board U-210 during the conflict.
Other parts of the story are told via readings from the report of Lieutenant Commander John H. Stubbs, DSC, who was in command of Assiniboine.
We are grateful to the interviewees, and to Mrs. Diana Hennessy and Mark Wunderlich, the great nephew of Hellmut Liebold who recorded the interview with Hellmut in Germany. Mark was also an invaluable help with translations and other background information.
It has been gratifying to witness two former enemies, now in their nineties, develop a long distance friendship.
We hope you agree with Mark and ourselves that this film, in spite of some technical quibbles, is truly special. We are all very proud of it.

Thanks, Rob for your excellent video showing the story of HMCS Assiniboine and U-210. Vice-Admiral Ralph Hennessy and Hellmut Liebold are welcomed contributors for sharing their history, and Mrs. Diana Hennessy and Mark Wunderlich are to be congratulated for helping to make this complete. This story is one I am familiar with. The deceased 18 year old sailor OS Kenneth Watson was a shipmate and friend of my then 19 years old father OS Jim Hart RCNVR (seen on the left in the foreground as part of Ken’s burial at sea honour guard). Dad went on, after a five year hiatus following the war and re-enlisting in 1950, to be buffer of HMCS Ontario, Cox’n of other vessels, sailing on the Cordova, Beacon Hill, CPO of Restigouche training division at Cornwallis, and much more, and then having married one of the earliest group of Wrens (WRCNS began Oct.1942) who also saw duty in Halifax (where they met) during WWII, later supporting two boys (my having gone to school named after John Stubbs), my brother and me in sea cadets, and seeing myself in the RCNR (‘64 - ‘71) with HMCS Swansea, HMCS Crescent, HMCS Oriole, tug HMCS St. Charles, and other ships. We both ended our careers on HMCS Mackenzie with my dad being Chief Warrant Officer, and myself Leading Seaman/Corporal. The Assiniboine was a cherished lady in our home, and were it not for the success of the ship and her crew I would not be here to add to your story. Thanks, again Rob. Well done.

Hi Imauzr Thank you for your kind words. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the film. Sadly both Ralph and Diana as well as Hellmut have passed since we did the film, but I'll definitely pass your comments on to Mark. The story of your Dad and yourself is also very interesting. It's a wonderful family legacy. Thank you for sharing that. I suspect from them way you spoke of your Dad that he is still alive. I certainly hope so and that he's well. If so, he may well be one of, if not the last survivor of the encounter. Again thank you for your comments and information, and for your own service. I wish you the very best. Rob

Thank you so much for your film. My father was a sailor on the Assiniboine during this battle and told me the story as a child. I have passed this on to my children and grandchildren who are excited to see it.

Hi Julie Thank you for this lovely comment. I'm so happy to hear that you're keeping this story alive with your children and grandchildren. Did your father tell you any details that are not in the film? Best regards, Rob

Yes these great stories completely make up for the horrible things that happen in war. And in life. Every time something horrible happens I think to myself 'great future story for by the fireplace' and I smile at someone else's tears. #hopesandprayers

Thank you for your comment. You raise such a good point. By far most of the rank and file soldiers and sailors weren't truly enemies, they were just doing their duty to their country. For example a Canadian farmer and a German farmer caught up in the whole thing would have no reason to hate one another. I suppose it will never happen, but wouldn't it be great if some day war becomes obsolete?

Great video! My father used to live in east point P.E.I, and told me about how when the tide was low, you could see parts of the ship sticking out of the water, it’s believed a bench from the mess hall was used in his old school house!

What a cool story. I hope the bench really is from Assiniboine. Thanks for sharing. Rob

My father ABS John H "Jack" Wietersen was an RCNVR and served aboard the HMCS Assiniboine I18 during World War 2. I've always been so very proud of him! I thank God he made it through all of that. He was the best Dad anyone could ever wish for. He passed away in 1996 and I miss him every single day. Love you Dad.

There is another piece of history not covered in this video that needs to be told. CPO Max Bernays was in the wheelhouse beneath the bridge conning the ship at the time of the engagement. He ordered everyone out of the wheelhouse when the fire broke out and stayed behind to man the telegraph, engine order indicators and Helm. In the 35 minutes the battle raged, he answered more than130 orders from the bridge by himself. It is normally a three man job, but Max handled them all and should have won the VC for his refusal to abandon his post in spite of the threat to his life. He survived the war and died after a long career as a naval reservist on March 30th, 1974 a the age of 64.

Thank you Dave. I'm glad that you appreciated that. The rank and file weren't enemies, it was, in this case, an evil tyrant that was the true enemy, ultimately of both sides.

Thank you for this video! It’s very important to have an account of our proud naval history and traditions. Note: I-18 HMCS Assiniboine (WW2) was a River Class Destroyer, not a Destroyer Escort. Again ,thank you very much for this important video!!

@@NewtonRobertT my father ,Ed Hall ,AB seaman ,served 1940-45 HMCS Gaspé, (mine sweeper) Brandon (Corvette),Swansea (Frigate) - spent most of the time on convoy duty. saw lots of u- boat action. His brother , Richard Hall, leading seaman( mechanic ) went to the bottom feb 23,1943 when HMCS Weyburn struck a mine off Gibraltar. Battle of Atlantic Day is a solemn day in my household. Remembering that the RCN was a collective of 20 year olds , It s a day to give thanks to these brave heroes. Ready Aye ready.

@@xndg I'm sorry to hear that your uncle was lost at such a young age and cheated of a full life. You are so right about the ages of those young men. My father served on Assiniboine twice, though not at the time of the encounter with U210. At 36 he was by far the oldest on board and was, I believe eight years older than the ship's captain. So many young lives lost all for the sake of some villain's (Hitler, Putin et al) ego and ambitions. Will humankind ever learn so that no more young lives will be lost in this way?

I believe the HMCS Assiniboine was being towed by a surplus Corvette from Quebec to the US for scrap in November 1945 when she broke loose of her tow and ended up off East Point PEI. PEI shipwreck maps actually list and illustrate her as a wreck.

Hi Alan. Thanks for this. I didn't know that they used a corvette to tow her. You might find MrCrumpets368 comment below interesting as well. Cheers, Rob

Yes I live on PEI and the bow was left behind when the rest was taken away, the very hull that was replaced in St. John's after the ramming of the U-boat.

A side note 1956-88 / DDH 234, (HMCS Assiniboine), was the first ship delivered post-war to the Royal Canadian Navy. She was first major class of warship designed and built in Canada . Bernays went on to command HMCS Assiniboine in 1978. "In honour of a true Canadian naval hero who exhibited outstanding leadership and heroism in the face of danger, the third of the RCN’s new Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships will be named after Max Bernays." RCN

I mean no disrespect but Max Bernays, if that is who you are talking about, was never in command of any vessel. He was a Chief Petty Officer not a commissioned officer, and died four years before you say he was the "old man" On Assiniboine. DDH 234. Please take no offense at my comments, none is intended. I am merely interested in accuracy.
