@syb0rg I've always preferred the Nikon look for exactly that reason. I shoot Nikon, but worked at a Canon-based newspaper, and I used to find that the Canon images were consistently undersaturated, too cool, and overexposed, while the Nikon shots were much more pleasing. (Keep in mind that I was working on professional calibrated monitors and print gear, too.) Maybe that cooler look is good for macro/nature stuff, but Nikon is much nicer on skin tones and colorful sports uniforms.

In all the comparison samples I see much better sharpness at point of focus wide open on the Nikkor, and the bokeh is clearly a lot more buttery whilst the Canon's bokeh has sharper edged circles, and doesn't blow out distracting highlights enough. I don't know what Canon fanboys below are looking at, but, think they need their eyes testing to say the L lens has better quality bokeh

Thank you for your honest and objective viewpoint Nathan. I've been both a Canon and a Nikon user and, to be honest, not a lot of this really matters: equipment is merely one small aspect of great picture making; the camera and lens are merely the tools. Every manufacturer of lenses has a few "dogs" in their product line up, whilst every manufacturer also has beautiful gems in equal measure. Even if a lens has some shortcomings, a skilled photographer will know how to work within the boundaries of those shortcomings so as they don't affect his/ her results. It is not a question of who is best: Nikon or Canon - that has always been childish and irrelevant. Most people go to a particular manufactuer for certain features of their cameras that appeal, ergonomics, even expressing preferences for a particular button/ switch layout. But, once you've purchased a brand's camera body(ies), you are more often than not obliged to use that manufacturer's range of accessories and lenses (unless you swear by 3rd party equivalents). I have to say that, whilst I am currently a Nikon user, I have started to purge some of my standard primes in favour of the new Sigma Art offerings: their 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.4 Art lenses are far superior to anything that either Canon or Nikon have to offer at a fraction of the price (the Sigma 50mm is far better than both the Canon 50mm f/1.2 and the Nikkor 58mm f/1.4 G premium standard lens, and the 35mm - well - that lens is just a sensation, and I recommend anyone to ditch their Nikon or Canon 35mm f/1.4's now and get it). It is similar with standard zooms or even 70-200 mm zooms... It doesn't matter who or what is best: if you know how to use them, and have the talent to take a good shot in equal measure, they will give you pleasure in use and pleasing results every time. I would say that the latest Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II is also not up to the Nikkor either: what's more it is made of plastic, and, costs about 35% more money! The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 is not referred to as "the reference standard zoom" for no reason... It is one of the stars of the Nikkor line up, much like their 14-24mm f/2.8G is (THE reason I moved to Nikon from Canon as it happens!). But, Canon also offer some great lenses too... Most notably the choice and quality of telephoto range lenses. Happy shooting!

I'm a Canon user. From just the shots on the video, I think Nikon had a slightly (very slightly) more "creamy" bokeh. Like most have said though, it's mainly personal preference. I'd love to see the REAL battle of the bokeh though aka Canon 85mm f/1.2 II vs. Nikon's 85 f/1.4...something tells me Canon has the edge in that one...

Brand loyalty plays huge part in deciding which looks better knowingly or subconsciously. As a Nikon user I'm drawn to the Nikon lens but I know I'm been biased. Maybe from now on ask people to vote but don't reveal which images belong to which brand of DSLRs until the next video?

Of course it would, the photos shown were at equivalent focal lengths. to get the same framing the pictures would have had to have been taken half a meter apart ...that alone would make a huge difference in dof.
@AidanZealley
@AidanZealley 12 лет назад
@AlaskanTKDKid That's irrelevant when comparing crop/full-frame images taken with the same lens. The crop sensor's image is just the middle bit of the full-frame image. Cropped sensors cause the field of view of the image you get to resemble that of a much longer focal length. To get an image with a FoV equivalent to that of full-frame you need a wider lens. Wider focal lengths increase the DoF, so less bokeh. 35mm on crop looks like 50mm on full-frame, but 35mm is wider so has larger DoF.
@durotube59
@durotube59 9 лет назад
Equipment is so secondary to the ability of photo taking that "choosing" between lenses of different makes is pointless. I'd "choose" the one that goes with my camera. A comparison between, say, Canon OR Nikon vs Sigma/Tamron/Tokina would be waaay more useful.

They both look equal to me it all comes down to if you prefer Canons colour over Nikon's, which you can adjust in post of course.
@pscollective
@pscollective 14 лет назад
Canon gets harsher in high contrast situations.. otherwise they are very similar. Obviously the colour balance can affect what we perceive as smooth - the best way to analyse bokeh is to compare the amount of circular highlights revealed and then concentrate on the edges of those highlights for any signs of outlining. Its quite obvious to me that the Canon has more outlining.. but the price point of the nikkor is quite high comparatively and i slightly prefer the construction of the Canon.
@Wiscompton608
@Wiscompton608 11 лет назад
While it probably is the body, better glass will give you better contrast, and the 5D Mark II isn't exactly a camera tailored towards those picking it up for a test shot at Best Buy. That being said, I actually prefer the Nikon's bokeh, and I'm a Canon user. They're both great lenses, and the Canon's still looks good, but the Nikon's is almost watercolor-ish.

@skyking166

Why is everyone commenting on the color lol? Canon's photos has always been warmer straight out of the camera, and I think that's more with the software of the body than the lenses.
@JoshuaObra
@JoshuaObra 14 лет назад
Hey Kai. You should post the shots you took on Flickr so we could compare them for hours. I'd say they're both the same. If the shots were never labeled, nobody could possibly tell the difference.
@jbag4795
@jbag4795 14 лет назад
My vote is for the Nikon, I find the smoother, more blended bokeh to be pleasant. I have a suggestion for two other lenses to try: The Nikkor 60 f/2.8 Micro vs Tamron 60 f/2 Macro. While the Tamron can go several f-stops wider, it's worth testing both at least at f/2.8. If you want a faster Nikkor portrait lens to compare, the 85mm f/1.4 might be a nice one to test, but given that the Tamron is for crop sensors, the 85 should probably be on an FX for the test. Oh, and get a haircut, Kai.
@skyking166
@skyking166 11 лет назад
For sure, the 5D Mark II is a killer camera, and by no mean it is a best buy camera. I be more than happy with either brand, I think it just comes down to personal preference. As far as Nikon's being watercolor-ish, I never had that problem with it before. I do notice, especially on the d3, it tends to lack a bit of punch/blacks. Easy fix with Lightroom.

Nikon v Canon which is better? the eye behind the viewfinder.
@skyking166
@skyking166 11 лет назад
it appears to me that Canon body naturally has more warmth and contrast. I think they did it in their camera software to be honest with you. After all, most consumer would like the warmer and contrasty look when they test shot the camera at Best Buy. Of course, Canon or Nikon, most serious hobbyist - Pro would edit their photos anyway, so I think it's not a huge problem there. I would take Canon over Nikon for straight out of camera, but probably Nikon for post.
@ccmassis
@ccmassis 13 лет назад
Is it the lens, the sensor or a combination of both that make the bokeh better? and if it is just the lens, what about lensbabies, etc.? What makes the bokeh be it?
@sacredgeometry
@sacredgeometry 12 лет назад
Relative DoF is effected, i.e. for the same framing on cropped sensor you would be less close to the subject so the dof would be greater. This is why people say that the dof is better on larger format cameras, because relative to the framing it is.

IMO, Canon wins the close-up, extreme bokeh battle. However, for stuff like portraits and fashion, at shorter focal lengths, longer distances, and at f/4 or so, Nikon's is better. I guess you could say that Canon's maximum bokeh is better, but Nikon's moderate bokeh wins over Canon's?

To be honest, the canon images just look better at first glance, at a closer look you can see the vibrancy difference, I personally don't think that's necessarily a good thing, but the bokeh on the canon is more defined, where the nikon bokeh looks more like a big soft blur, even at close glance, yes some of the nikon images were washed out, so were some of the canon ones, that's just kai's fault.

I think that Nikon wins in the first round with the small flower. In the second example, the lighting is uneven. The exposure is lower in the Nikon frame making it more difficult to compare objectively. I have no call in this one. In the 3rd test with Lok as the model, the results look like a dead heat. I really can't call a clear winner @ 70mm.

I'm not going to watch this again, but if you think the canon does a better job than the nikkor on color fringe, you're incorrect. Photozone reviewed both lenses, and the nikkor came ontop. Especially with fringing. The proof is in the pudding. I've played with quite a few 24-70 lenses (canon ones) and they all have them. Awesome lens by all means, but even still. Maybe you should get your 24-70 checked out (if you have one) to see if it truly is a magical, built on a good friday lens. =|

So I've only been looking at getting into photography for the past week and after everything I have learned I started watching this expecting Nikon to be better, and based on the comments that seems to be the popular opinion; however when I see the images, I feel like canon is obviously better; though my eye is untrained, I may be wrong. I really have no place making this decision other than, as a public viewer, I would be more drawn to the subject in the canon images; somewhat making me think that everyone shouting out "NIkon" might just be a bunch of Nikon fan-boys-and-girls who came into this already biased on their answer. At this point I can't really figure it out; and Kai (i've been watching your videos to help guide my introduction into photography) and your lack of conclusions in your videos frustrates me bro. Like, you always leave the answer up to viewer; and I'm like "i don't know shit though, I came to you for the answer!!! Like say which one you favor and why! Maybe you see something I don't and you gots to say it so I can be, AH...K...I see... I agree."

+O.J. Morales IV Been into photography for half a year, and shooting with Nikon (D3200). I can see an obvious difference in contrast and vibrance between Nikon and Canon for unedited photos (Entry-level like mine 550D or otherwise 6D), but my solution to this has always been post. Putting images through simple adjustments in Lightroom or Photoshop after shooting RAW can make a WORLD of difference. Learning how to do post has by far been the most valuable lesson after the basic "Getting the images right" (Not screwing photos up with incorrect framing and settings). I'm guessing that DigitalRev didn't put their photos through post to ensure that the bokeh didn't get altered in any way. My conclusion for this difference is - it doesn't really matter. This is my flickr, you can see what you can do with just a D3200: www.flickr.com/photos/140074119@N02/
