Hi Doc and Adam, that was a really good informative test, something john Ward would be proud of ;-), I've got several of those in referent tool bags including my plumbing bags, Kewtech was my favourite too, until I loaned it out and came back with no buzzer, another £50 down the drain when I bought it, I've also got the socket & see, with no trip loop test for quick check on the health of the sockets. Nicely done lad's. Peter.

Your future is definitely in teaching doc, well done mate. The ethos one was designed by dishonest sparks looking for extra work. After having numerous socket testers nicked out of my tool bag on site or losing one because it has no audible beep I bought a chicken dinner one about five years ago. I got so much stick from other sparks, because it was cheap and nasty, but it still works and no one has nicked it. I like the “katch it ere”one where did you get it from mate.

Well Done Lads... fun and to the point... I have the Socket n See but wanted to check on the new gear...your winner Kecheer is what I shall buy. Probably a little unfair on the Ethos because you knew it was faulty before you put it through its paces (and I think it is probably a rebranded Socket n See. Which are really rugged. Can't say the same for the red faced Winner tester which looks like it wouldn't last long in a tool box. You could have only bettered the vid with a drop test. Thanks

My Martindale has a buzzer. From what I remember it was only a few quid more than the basic one. You'll not find a plug-in tester that will identify n-e reverse on a PME as they are both at the same potential. The Ethos tester looks exactly like the Socket & See base model socket tester (just rebranded).

If the earth is live the screws are the least problem as all the grounded cases will gt the voltage. It has two lights on as they represent line-neutral and line-earth. Neutral-earth is not on. 9:55 If you touch the pad the LCD will show if there is over 50 V on the earth.

You don't need to remove other devices. The RCD has to work regardless how many devices are connected. If the RCD doesn't react, your RCD is broken or the tester is wrong. To check this try the tester in an other circuit with RCD.

“If you leave off the covers then the rcd will trip because it’s live and people will touch it tripping the rcd and that protects people” is ridiculous and you know it. If the rcd works, it would work just as well when the customer touches the appliance that has then become live because of the fault as it does when the customer touches the screw. It’s not like the screws are connected via a protective resistor or anything like that. Also missing from your fault board is options where certain voltages are present on multiple pins - most usefully, live on two of the three pins due to weirdness. Admittedly it’s not “someone mixed up the wires somewhere” common but it could happen.
