This model display of the Battle of Waterloo is made up of 15,000 hand-cast and painted 25mm figurines. It was made by Andre Rudolph over a period of eight years.
The table display measures 8 x 4 metres.
This display represents around an 13th of the actual numbers (almost 200,000) that were involved in the Battle, but it does give a good idea of how crowded those few square miles were that day in June 1815 and how desperately the Battle was fought.
It was on loan display at the Prince August Toy Solider factory located at Kilnamartyra, a few miles from the west Cork town of Macroom, and worth the visit! The type of moulds and metal from which the 25mm soldiers were cast are available in the factory shop next to the display.
It has since been returned to go on display in Germany.

One day, we will open a window in time to record the battle. And until that day, we have your epic battle display, thank you for sharing.

This diorama is probably the finest I have seen. Mr Rudolph should be recognised for his awesome achievement.

i often wondered what the sight of a battlefield with so many soldiers on it would have looked like, and now i have an idea, brilliant, thank you for this video..

I'm curious as to why anyone would go to the trouble of clicking 'dislike' to this video and yet not bother to go to the trouble of explaining why. What did you expect to see when you clicked on this link? The actual 1815 battle of Waterloo, filmed almost 100 years before the invention of the film camera? Despite the title?

I for one loved the display. but i think the reason why people disliked the video is due to the constant cannon fire.

Fair point, it is very noisy and constant! I read a book on Waterloo, called '24 Hours at Waterloo" by Robert Kershaw and it seems that the sound of gunfire and cannonfire went on pretty much all day long. I was stunned by the statistics when I read the book, over 200,000 troops took to the field on the day, which must make it one of the largest battles of its period, if not history (yes, I know Stalingrad etc., were numerically superior). I used to think of these early 19th century battles as rather 'tame' affairs compared to what was experienced during WW1 and WW2, but going by Kershaw's book that doesn't seem to have been the case at all. The injuries and casualties were horrific, the adrenalin must have been have been pumping as much as it ever was at the Somme or The Battle of the Bulge. I was trying to convey some of that in the soundtrack, but maybe it grates after a while. I can only imagine what it must have been like for those there in person!

Theophilus200 I thought the video was excellent. Apart from Hougoumont being left out? Thats the first place the French attacked and it held out throughout the day. Unlike La Hayne Sainte which fell to the French retaken later. Hougoumont tied down a a major part of Napoleons left flank. Wellington himself said that if he had lost hougoumont he would have lost the battle.

A fantastic and valiant model effort - Shows the central section of La Haye Sainte and main part of the battle in the afternoon, when the British/Allied squares held off the French massed cavalry charges. But, William Siborne's model at the NAM is THE one, made soon after the actual battle and from many eye-witness accounts.

It's interesting how they'd have giant signs with a single alphabet on each in the middle of the battlefields back in the day.

Wow! I am amazed!! This masterpiece would have taken a very long time to make, probably years i am sure. I paint Napoleonic miniatures myself, I usually paint 28mm from perry and some other makers., also I have 10mm from old glory and my 18s are all AB miniatures. Nice to see such work with such realism, and accuracy in detail. Just brilliance.

Hi Kieran, I am a big fan of Perry Miniatures myself, although my period is late medieval, eg Wars of the Roses. The detail and versatility is second to none. I use some metal figures, but hard plastic is hard to beat for detail. Even Perry's metal ranges are good, some other manufacturer's figures tend to look clumpy, the boots too big for the legs, the hands oversized etc., I use the 28mm scale, it's a good scale to work with from a painting and modelling POV but it can take up a lot of space when it comes to producing a town or even a medium-sized village on the wargaming table.

Wonderful part of the battle shown here, but Hougoumont is not shown , there the fighting lasted most of the battle. La Haye Sainte mostly remembered as it is still there complete today for its part of the action where the Kings German Legion and Nassau infantry along with British troops fought it out against the massive onslaught of the French until they ran out of rifle ammo. This they did bravely supported by the British 95th Rifles on the slopping ground beside it and above it in the sand pit. Along side this sand pit were two British guns that peppered the French with round shot and ball. They are missing from the dio,but were very important on that day of days when massive armies slogged it out against each other. However stating this one cannot get every small detail of such a fight to be seen. The great thing i liked especially on this diorama was the Prussian army entering upon the scene totally outflanking the French. This action did save the day. Without Blucher being there Napoleon would`ve had an extra 35.000 men entering the battle to smash the Allied Army commanded by Lord Wellington and The Prince of Orange. All in all a Splendid display of model soldiers in action. BB

All it needs is smoke, a few flames, and maybe impacting projectiles on men / horses, the ground and equipment. Finally bodies in windrows and blood - soaked ground. (I have had some experience of making dioramas eg Inkerman diorama) Then it would be perfection.
