RWBY saved my life. Now I know that's a big statement to say, especially on a video that is celebrating the series to its fullest… But it's true.
For those who know the story and for those who don't, I found RWBY back in December of last year (2023). The friend who got me into it, who I've known for years now, had been a fan of the show since the beginning. He has been trying to make me watch the show for years, but it always flew under my radar…
I never had a reason to watch it.
About a year ago now, my mother passed away to illness. For a while, I was numb to everything. I would just stay in my room, listening to music, and daydreaming; making up little stories in my head to keep me safe, and to protect myself from grieving. One of those songs happened to be the one I used for this edit… I found myself going back to this song frequently to help.
Things like talking to friends, watching TV shows, and writing helped. But I felt like a shell of myself. I had no motivation to do anything creative or to put anything out there.
This led to me having insomnia-like episodes, where I wouldn't go to sleep. But during that fateful December day… at 12:00 in the morning, I decided to open up the Rooster Teeth website and watch the first episode. The trailers had already intrigued me enough… But I really didn't know what I was getting into.
The world that was crafted, the world that I saw through my screen, was idealistic; Somehow managing to merge the likes of sci-fi-like tech advancements to a fantasy setting. I found myself fascinated with the world of Remnant, it's rich lore that made it seem… Lived in. And the characters were so endearing, I wanted to cheer for them…
It felt like walking into a fairy tale.
That night, after I had finished the first episode, I wanted to watch more. But instead of forcing myself to stay up… I remembered my friend. The one who got me into the show in the first place… I wanted to talk to him about it.
So for the first time in months since my mother's passing, I actually found it within me to try to fall asleep. And I did.
I spent the entire month of December, and a little into January and February of this year, binge watching the show, talking to that friend all the while, sharing my reactions and theorizing about the show while I watched it. I would geek out about the show with him, talk about things like the character designs, ramble on and on about the series soundtrack; Having in-depth discussions about character mindsets, growth, how serious topics such as racism, emotional well-being, abusive living situations, PTSD, and depression were written in the show with such tact… I even ended up connecting with some characters personally. (Yang is one of the big reasons why I'm still here, emotionally speaking.)
RWBY, at its core, is a story about growing up. Preaching the lesson that you will either have to learn to move with the world, or the world will find ways for you to move forward. But you don't have to move forward alone…
And I won't. I won't move forward alone. I've met people through this community that I know I will never forget. My friend described this community as “the door others refuse to open… A place that lets you in with open arms.” It's a place where creativity flourishes, and color abounds…
I'm so happy I get to witness it with all of you.
RWBY saved my life. It reignited the spark that I thought had withered away and died… and showed me that, no matter what trials you face in life, there's always a way to keep moving forward.
I didn't know how much I needed to hear those words until I heard them.
