It’s a much loved fusion of north-east steel, engineering, pride and beauty, it is the symbol of the Geordie nation. It is of course the Tyne Bridge. It is soon to be a hundred years old but showing its age. So a massive repainting job is about to begin.

But there is one major challenge. It's not just people who love that bridge. We've been given exclusive access to see just how Newcastle City Council is planning to protect the world's most inland colony of endangered kittiwakes on the girders of the bridge itself, when the repainting teams move in.

Glad the local authority is actually taking into account wildlife and protecting the birds - well done to them. About time more local authorities did the same!

I'll never see the Tyne Bridge again, being born a Geordie, but I live within an hour of its big sister in Sydney.

Thinking of the first Kittiwakes that went there and thought, 'Yep, pet, this is the spot'.

Regarding the introduction in your report, construction of the Sydney Harbor Bridge actually started earlier than that of the Tyne Bridge.

Quite right, though the Tyne Bridge, being a lot smaller, was completed first.

Such an iconic structure. This emblem and the Geordie people deserve the best. (Levelling up, Sunak?)

The council doesn't have much choice really there red listed and I am surprised there even allowed to continue. Hopefully the kittiwakes will be alright and adapt to there alternatives

By ‘eck, it’s grim oop North! Poor old Newcastle will never win any prizes for beauty. Try Durham; a much more pleasant option.

One of the most deprived, sad and grim cities I had the bad fortune to live in. Wild parties, binge alcohol, insane health inequalities - the loveliest of all English people, Geordies, I am not sure how they deserve this fate.
@titteryenot4524
@titteryenot4524 Год назад
Ask yourself why the wild parties and binge alcohol? These people are living in a horrendously grey, grim urban landscape. Never underestimate the power of our surroundings to shape our lives. Seeing ugliness everywhere warps the soul.

@@titteryenot4524 Yes, I know this. However, people are insecure and live in constant denial and have unusual bravado to counter these arguments.

@@titteryenot4524 bari is also a sh*t hole. They said "had the misfortune of living in", (edit: "had the bad fortune to live in). Don't have to be British to have lived there. I'm British and used to live in Bari and Rome.
@titteryenot4524
@titteryenot4524 Год назад
@@jenjones90 I disagree about Bari. It has a gorgeous whitewashed Old Town that reminded me of a Morrocan medina. The rest is a bit meh, agreed, but even Bari’s ‘meh’ is 100x more appealing than Newcastle’s ‘ugh!’

They should encourage the birds to nest somewhere else because it is a nightmare walking under the bridge when they are nesting right above the footpaths it is like running the gauntlet of bird pooh and this is on both sides of the bridge they should put up netting after they have finished nesting to stop them coming back to same place and they leave such a disgusting mess on the bridge and on the pavements below which is a right eyesore.
@jessicatorretto159
@jessicatorretto159 Год назад
Definitely. And it causes it to rust and corrode. They could easy set up a nesting area away from bridge's and footpaths. Otherwise this is going to be a massive problem in years to come.
@TheIncredibleBeard_
@TheIncredibleBeard_ Год назад
It's mad they are even contemplating letting the birds return. By all means do it when they aren't nesting and then buy a few eagles to keep them away after the work is done 😉

Being a Geordie myself I always remember that great feeling of being home again when the Tyne bridge came into view as I was crossing the Tyne on the train from kings cross London after I had been working away for some time I remember when thousands would be on the quayside under the Tyne bridge celebrating the new year in at midnight what an atmosphere that was, that's what makes theTyne bridge special to me.
