zeppelin's weren't very destructive, but damn, they look terrifying. imagine that thing slowly revealing itself through the smokey sky of war, towering over everything.
A lot of things in World War we're like that haha some scary deadly and others laughably impractical in retrospect. Take airplanes for example most high-ranking generals at the time couldn't understand their usefulness and use them solely for reconnaissance in the beginning. Aircraft didn't even used to be equipped with machine guns until later in the war. Pilots were known to wave at one another even if they were technically enemies. I find that old. Fascinating my great-grandfather was a pilot in World War 1
Dang. I never got to drive the zeppelin, but I managed to be a gunner inside of the zeppelin. It was amazing. I shot down planes, tanks, cars, and people. But once the zeppelin was going down, a lot of the crew died. It was only me and 2 other guys and we were all gunners. The pilot died because this plane was shooting at the pilot, but not just shooting. It actually CRASHED into it and killed the pilot. Christ almighty. Then it started going down, and I was in first person and I witnessed the zeppelin crashing into a town and getting crushed in between two mountains. I saw people running for their lives, but it was too late. The zeppelin blew up and half the server died.
@@BallMuncher555 I mean- yeah. It was very hard to keep track of how many kills there were. there were way too many.. Nobody ever takes the role of a "kamikaze" in lots of war games, especially battlefield. It was helluva time on that zeppelin, and I just got excited to tell the tale.
Basically lol although from what I've heard Zeppelin travel is actually quite comfortable and even though it's slower I think I would enjoy it because I get air sick. And they don't they use helium now instead of hydrogen so you don't have to worry about them exploding. for a while there was a company doing flights from southern to northern California but I think they went out of business. I think what the technology were coming up with there's no reason that a mostly solar powered Zeppelin couldn't be considered
@@RabidNemo yeah i love zeppellins and blimbs to but there is one major disadvantage, there is need for so much hydrogen and space for maintanence. And no Airport is capable of housing an airship. But there is one tourist airship on the Bodensee i think
@@lordbone7119 modern ones actually use helium instead of hydrogen. Helium is actually more efficient and a lot safer (Also not flammable lol) They used to moor them to skyscrapers sometimes. There's actually a very famous picture of a Nazi Germany era airship over New York and I believe it actually moored itself to the empire State building
The molecular mass of hidrogen is lower than helium ,soo a hidrogen filled blimp has more lift .The good thing about helium is that it can't burn ,because It s a nobel gas.
I remember when I first played battlefield and the enemies got a blimp and I was amazed at how massive the scale of battle felt, surrounded by the mayhem on the ground and then looking up at the collosal blimp blowing up was amazing
I totally agree! I wish they could have found a better balance with them though. Initially they were way too effective and hard to take out so they nerfed them but they over nerfed them and it got to the point where you could take them down in a minute or two and then it just got to the extent that although they were really cool I just wondered if it was even worth having them in the game at all
I will admit that I am quite fascinated with these Airships. What they did... Who originally made them... When they were made... How they function... They can also be used as Aircraft Carriers... I don't care about which country/State made them or which side they were on. The Airship itself intrigues me!
I completely agree with you there! However their uses aircraft carriers would have been limited. Some of them did have lighter aircraft attached to the bottom which could take off but it was dangerous. However I wish they would reinvest in them as we could make them faster now and it's a wonderful way to travel. There was a company for a while that did trips from northern to Southern California however they unfortunately stopped because they weren't making a profit
NOOR DRAWS that really sucks mate :( I got really lucky being able to get this. Honestly steering it isn't all it's cracked up to be especially now with the buff to the AA guns the zeppelins go down very quickly
BF1 is like World at War of the Battlefields.. even in multiplayer you can feel the horrors of the Great War.. incredible game. I love the Zeppelins in this game as well.
Definitely has a lot of fun aspects but honestly it's a shame that Dice didn't tone down the machine guns a little bit. Sub-machine guns especially! They were very rare and oftentimes only handed out to special forces / trench raiders
I remember once there was a zeppelin and the craziest thing happened. It was on the other team and me and my friends were in a bomber and one of them had a wild plan, we flew over it and set to dive bomb towards it but we jumped out and parachuted onto the top of the zeppelin and had a firefight with people who were on the enemy team ontop of it but we survived and secured it so they didn't have any access to anti-air cannons and whatnot. Eventually the zeppelin got shot down and we were running from one side of it way to the back with a wall of fire approaching us and all managed to jump off and parachute to safety, it was like something straight out of a movie xd
I would love if Zeppelins were used in today's warfare. I mean, a massive, huge balloon-like flying machine, with strong cannons, and carrying fighter jets. It would be really, really cool.
@@huskpl3yz358 not missle proof. Too much hassle if one went down with f35 on board that's a pricey loss. Avengers style aircraft carriers is an idea they are aiming for.
@@RabidNemo Agreed, some of the behemoths were unkillable monsters, and others were borderline useless like the train. I think that the train personally should have gone in a loop instead of needing to stop and turn around, you could even connect 2-3 points to it so it cant just sit there and die. The 2 biggest instances of this are the Artillery Train in Suez and the other train on that one crashed blimp map. This game was fucking great though man, shame we'll never get another battlefield like it because Dice decided to forget how to make battlefields. (i dont even want like WW1 or 2 BF, just give me classic BF gameplay, none of this 2042 bullshit)
No kidding! That's why they stop using them a couple years into the war. They're intimidating and effective but they're full of explosive canisters. Once they started going down it was pretty much a death sentence
I can’t be the only one who’s gone back to bf1 Haha. I have been fortunate enough to fly one of these majestic airships, however anti air is an absolute pain against them.
I was 9 minutes into this when my dog started barking in the backyard, went to the door to let her in, and see that she's barking at a low flying hot air balloon almost directly above us. Totally tripped me out.
I remember this before servers were nearly dead, I drove it, and was a gunner on it, when it went down it crashed into the most populated flag killing nearly everyone. Man those were good times, I still don’t know why this game isn’t alive with people anymore. It’s great and even without dlc , you get the full experience. It’s immersive, the cosmetics were also real and don’t ruin the atmosphere, the atmosphere is great for what you want from this game. I still don’t understand how the game is nearly dead.
Coming back to this video is always so satisfying. Even tho BF2042 is in a pretty good state rn and they are bringing positive update after positive, I have to admit, that Battlefield 1 was probably THE most well thought out and programmed game of the whole franchise. Also considering the year it came out. The Zeppelin was probably the most epic thing in the whole Battlefield era imo.
Thanks that means a lot! Part of the reason that I recorded this clip is I felt like it captured a lot of the aspects of battlefield 1 and battlefield itself. Plus this was not long after the game came out and I couldn't find any videos on RU-vid of people piloting the Zeppelin. I think it's funny over the years how this video has blown up as I wouldn't really consider myself a content creator Someone pointed out though that with the Netflix series all quiet on the western front there's probably been a massive interest in world War I
People will never understand anymore just how much fun the Ziplines gamemode was. The premase was simple: Team A destroys Team B's zepplin, Team B destroys Team A's zepplin All are supported by biplanes (from light to heavy) and i think smaller airships. Oh man, and the AA guns on that? i'd rack up so many kills.

I never wanted to drive the beheamoths but the side gunners on the Zeppelin were insane. I was already adept with the AA gun so these were insane, I'd rain hellfire from above, basically halving the forces taking a town below.. miss playing this game
Just watching this clip is making me shiver. Battlefield 3 and 4 fanboys can argue amongst themselves, but ""real"" Battlefield fans know that BF1 is the best.

This is a good map for the Zeppelin too! Especially since this was the early days of the game before they had nerfed and buffed both the AA gun and Zeppelin itself. For a while it was so bad when they initially buffed the AA guns that one armored truck with an AA gun could take down a Zeppelin in about a minute 😬
Honestly didn't even catch that! Never understood why they went with those call signs anyway. It's what the British use but I think alpha beta Charlie etcetera would have been better
During one of the games. I found a small machine gun post. Far away from any of the action and far away from the enemy. I got on it and then an enemy airship appeared. I began firing at it and for about 15 minutes straight I kept firing at the airship. My small little machine gun took down the airship.
I could not imagine the fear in being inside a zeppelin while being shot at lol. Here take this hydrogen filled bomb and fly to the battlefield please. Lol.
6 years late real life trivia: in early stages WW1 Rigid Airships fly so high guns couldn't reach & planes couldn't intercept, thats how the Germans managed to Bomb London & return home, this was true until 1916s where high explosives & anti air measures were introduced. Rigid Airships are actually very fast, they can reach up to 140km/h, and most WW1 fighters are 180km/h Not only that they can carry up to 2 tonnes of payload, and for WW1 standard its insanely huge. So if this was realisticly depicted in BF1, the Balloon would just sweep through the map really really high like the Ilya Muromets bomber, but about 25% higher & carries more bombs.
I just feel like they never really had a good balance to them no matter how the devs changed things up. I think maybe they should have reevaluated the whole behemoth thing maybe instead give a boost to each individual players ammunition or something like that. Reward players that have managed to not die with a bunch of ammo and maybe some extra stuff
Yeah I really had no idea what I was doing here this was the first time I had ever gotten to be in the pilot seat and it was just about a week or so after the game had released. It was before they had been nerfed significantly
for all the other factions i would complain that it makes no sence for the captain of this huge zepelin to have the same uniform as a standard rifleman, but for the germans it looks so clean and formal i don't see a difference
I remember when the zeppelin come and nobody not even a single soul will control it and nobody gonna defend They just T-BAG at top of zeppelin and start shooting the plane and ground enemy using they own rifle Edit: they all die cuz get shoot by scout (sniper)
lol yeah definitely gets pretty crazy and this was in the early release window for the game so it was still pretty new to everyone. Part of the reason I even put this up is I couldn't find any videos at the time of people piloting the Zeppelin. It used to be fun but it goes down so quick now that it doesn't work I think they should have put a time limit on the Zeppelin and giving it infinite health because at one point when they nerfed it you could get in an anti-aircraft artillery truck and literally take one down in about a minute and 30 seconds
@@RabidNemo I am like you, when everyones out there running into each others bullets, Im ALWAYS on the artillery or the DreadNought or the Zep bombarding the hell out of people, to me it was reminiscent of 1942 with the ships at sea, I wish they allowed us to use them the way they were supposed to be used.
@@shawnio I totally agree! I also thought it was ridiculous how close you have to get to the shoreline in order to effectively fire off the guns. Those guns are so big you could be a couple miles out to sea and easily hit several miles inland. I actually finished off a dreadnought with the t-gewer anti tanker kit granted firing rounds that large at a battleship would be a bit of a problem but not enough to cripple it. There was a lot I didn't like about battlefield 1 in their effort to make it more appealing and stick with a traditional FPS they put far too many machine guns in to be accurate. They should have just stuck with bolt action rifles to be historically accurate. If you go back to call of duty 2 they had bolt action rifles that would kill you in one hit or wipe out most of your health in one hit. But there used to be a much higher score limit in those older games I think if they had increased number of spawns instead of Just having everyone run around with submachine guns and Just had people with high damage single shot rifles it would have not only been historically accurate but a better gameplay experience The amount of grenade spam and machine guns was beyond obnoxious. Machine guns weren't even that widely issued in world War II
Yeah it got a pretty bad nerf not too long after I recorded this video. However I was playing recently and they've been brought back up from where they were but it's not much better
Zeppelins are really fun! Especially since they changed how much damage the anti-aircraft cannons do. I used to be able to hop in an artillery truck with the anti-air package and single-handedly take down a Zeppelin in 2 minutes! I agree the train was a terrible idea and they go down way too easily. Even with grenades in real life those things would have been able to take a lot more of a punch

I would love a game where it is just people running around in these machines of war, reloading, repairing, firing their guns, etc. Where communication is limited based on proximity or whether or not a speaking tube was nearby, or through a simplified version Morse Code if needed to communicate with allied vessels.
Back when Airships in Battlefield 1 was harder to counter, when people mostly panicked at varying levels... and with proper ground support? Even today, an Airship can be completely unstoppable.
They are definitely the best optimized of all the behemoths for sure! There was still a lot of confusion around these as to how vulnerable they were when I got this footage the game had only been out for a week or two. Before they got things properly balanced out they over buffed the AA guns and I remember because I did it You could get in an armored truck with the anti-aircraft variant and if you concentrated your shots on the weak points like the engines and the guns you could take it down in around a minute or two at most less than that if you have coordination I think that's the biggest problem with these games almost no one communicates anymore. There were a few times in the battlefront 2 era a number of years ago there was a guy on RU-vid that would invite people in his stream and there were a few times where it was 30 of us all working together so basically the entire team and it was amazing with a little coordination and communication what could be accomplished

Time flies lol. I'm still really shocked this video got as many views as it did considering I pretty much just upload random stuff and don't really put any effort into RU-vid. And the last few days I've been getting a lot of comments and views on it I don't know what's up with the algorithm lol
No kidding! But that's the inevitably of developers doing knee-jerk reactions to complaints about the difficulty / eased to take one of them down. First they made it way too easy then they made it too hard then they made it easy again. What makes me sad is what inevitably happens with any combat game is eventually the maps have been played so many times that everybody knows all of the flanking routes and the only way to be successful is to actually have proper team work
The whole point of airships was they could carry more ordinance then aircraft of the time and at an altitude out of the range of some aircraft. No zeppline would fly that low
@@RabidNemo makes more sense. Zepplins may be slow but typically wouldn't stay aloft over enemy territory for too long. They would have dropped their payload and then leave
@@wrongway1100 exactly the way you drop the bombs was really weird as well because you couldn't just drop one at a time you would drop three large ones and then have a very long reload time if anything I think it would be better to have been able to do a carpet bombing style thing where it would lock the Zeppelin on a certain course and drop bombs in a straight line for say 10 seconds and then you only have the cannons remaining. I was able to clear entire objectives as you can see in this video with well-timed bombs. I have a few other videos with some pretty wild stuff in battlefield 1 like when I accidentally got a headshot on a pilot with a tank because the tank was angled looking up the hill
@@RabidNemo I see your. In reality it wasn't very precise bombing. The optics was terrible and the flew extremely high. Plus it was a lighter then air ship. The wind easily knocked them off course. The Germans mostly used the in terror bombing

@@bigdapramirez6157 Yes that definitely helped but a couple weeks after this when they nerfed the health it got to the point where a single AA truck could take down an airship in less than a minute. I really wish they had better reworked how the behemoths operate
