This makes a lot of sense in terms of the story of BF...After all this takes place in the same timeline as Bf3 and 4.. And in Bf3 Paris was levelled by an atomic blast.
So here's a list of the most interesting things I could discern from this cutscene: In America, Brazil is a Failed State (which means it can't even provide basic necessities to its population, kinda like modern-day Somalia), Venezuela is a State at Risk, and nations like Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Chile and French Guiana (???) are red, which presumably means Total Collapse. In Europe, the Baltic Countries are wholly ravaged by the mother of all wildfires. France is under threat of Public Riots (so just another regular day in France), the UK (or England) is put under Total Collapse, Germany is a Failed State, and Poland, Czechia, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands have all Closed their Borders. Though Ireland is described as "Celtic Union", which is really weird but seeing how there's a line on the Anglo-Scottish border that looks like it lol People are actively immigrating to Switzerland, Austria and Croatia, which suggests they might be the most stable countries yet on the continent. Nice world-building, shame it's totally irrelevant in the game.
The fact that governments can actually fall apart and make the most devastating decisions at any moment, actually makes this story seem more accurate and more interesting because of that.
and then went to "dont be sad this is just how it works out sometimes". Even if the game will be still rough after all the seasons, im hoping they'll at least make the game immersive because it just has such a great theme with potential. edit: my baked ass thought u meant the theme for the story and setting, not the actual main theme lol
Hands down the best lore out of all Battlefield games, yet still the most unexplored one. There is literally no way around it: This game should've had a single player campaign.
@Extant Fellow Sorry for the late response but I think you're talking about "story" not "lore". Lore means the whole world/universe of the game and story is the one set within that world. Battlefield 1 has fictional story/stories but the world is 100% based on real life, Battlefield 2042 in the other hand would have a fictional story if it had one but also it's world is pure fiction. I hope you caught my point here 😅
Would've been crazy to see them reintroduce Blackburn from 3, Tombstone Squad from 4 and somehow bring in the Bad Company Crew for an intertwined campaign. It could have continued off of BC2's cliffhanger of a Russian invasion, and years after Blackburn's release from Custody after stopping Solomon in 3, and then a recap on why Tombstone squad split up and where Recker was. The only two we know of are Pac and Irish still being around, at least in the short film.
@@giahuynguyenkim6389 Yeah it sucks, he was my favorite out of everyone in the Tombstone Unit. Survived a lot in BF4 and then gets killed by the Chopper in 2042's shortfilm... Good character.
2042 really looks like it could have had one of the most emotional, interesting, and downright heartbreaking campaigns ever. Imagine if you played as someone who watched their own country fall into ruin, soldiers wondering what exactly they're fighting for, killing off an enemy squad only to discover they were made up of your own friends and family, fighting tooth and nail over a small resource while knowing the planet is dying and in the end it really won't matter who wins we're all fucked anyway.
Do you understand you will not need a game to witness this? This will be the reality of most of the Western world very soon. Maybe even before 2030. You just wait and see. And prepare, if you are smart...
This looks like they were maybe 5 months into making a singleplayer campaign before it got scrapped. I imagine there's probably a huge stack of scripts, sequences, level sketches and character designs buried deep in EA headquarters. It's a huge shame. I really wanted to get 2042 because it made itself look like a direct BF4 sequel. Instead, we get blueballed by really interesting lore.
No yeah, about a year ago there was leaks of the “next battlefield’s campaign” done by prominent leaders such as Tom Henderson. They said the campaign was about “you and your team of mercenaries” who did jobs for different clients but that at the end of the campaign you got the opportunity to choose between working for Russia or the US. I didn’t think much of those leaks the time, but now it makes so much sense. Those “mercenaries” were literally the no-pats and we of course now know that Russia and the US are the main factions in bf 2042. There’s definitely no doubt in my mind they were working on a campaign but that it eventually got scrapped for whatever reason. It makes me sad to think about it because the lore and narrative they got going on so far is incredibly kickass and interesting
Tbh this is the most based lore that Battlefield has. The geopolitical changes, climate changes, etc may sound exaggerated at first, but when you think about it, they can happen at any moment.
Probably the most realistic lore, so damn good in so many ways. I wished this game had a campaign and they ditched Hazard Zone for a full fledged story like this
@@Dr.KarlowTheOctoling definitely. Hell, playing as a No Pat accompanying Kayvan Bechir from Doha until Exodus story would suffice for a solid storyline, or even play as many sides
If we fail to maintain peace meanwhile controlling our emission (industrial and personal) for sure, those catastrophe will come anytime soon. It has been confirmed by climate modelling too. I learn this while hearing "To a Lesser Degree" Podcast by The Economist.
Creators themselves probably have no idea in the first place. Reusing Russia again as superpower faction is clear sign that developers don't want to piss off PRC.
@@ReichLife They should've just went with Pan Asian Coalition easter eggs from BF4. That way they could connect BF2042 with both 4 and maybe 2142 remake/reboot in the future.
I think they implied China is either completely collapsed into a failed state as others or weaken so much they close themselves off, which should make sense in the context following civil war (and clash with both US and Russia in between) in BF4 and then total natural disasters in 2042.
@@ReichLife lets be real here, if they use china as the bad guy like they did in BF4, CCP will ban BF 2042 and it would hurt the sales of their game. So EA took the safest way and then using stereotype russian as the bad guy
I love how the story goes from fighting to show that both sides of the war has been played to fighting to be the last one remaining. Really shows what the last days on earth would be like.
I love Battlefield but to me, DICE gives us cool chilling cutscenes of historical, global warming, and countries in War in 2042. But sadly, they don't give us a Campaign for it and that's what disappointed me. Multiplayer and Hazard are very fun to play but it doesn't somewhat relate to what the story is occurring.
Actually, if you drive a vehicle, there are sometimes radios within them. Turn them on and you may be able to hear the lore within newscasts and stuff. Add to that the playercards having codex entries like in BF1. The lore is hidden within vehicles, playercards, and the maps themselves. The story of 2042 begins in Hourglass, and the NoPats are caught in operations which brought us players to the other six maps. Food for Renewal, shipping for Manifest, sensitive property in Discarded, oil activity in Breakaway, sensitive data in Kaleidoscope, and a second phase after the blackout in Orbital.
Expectation: A dark, gritty story of civilisation being bought to the depths of hell, the dissolution of nationality as survivors desperately fight for dwindling resources in the name of survival and revenge Reality: Don't be sad, that's just how it works out sometimes :)
Gimme that god damn soundtrack! I love it!! Those foghorns are so deep and create dread while Micheal (Irish) talks about the story of 2024’s world post-BF4 and how it’s all gone to shit.
Bf1943 also didn't have a campaign too So the battlefield games that has no campaign is 1943, 2042 and 2142 You can forgive battlefield for no story in 1943 and 2142 because they either already did that war but wanted to expand it or the game is too far into the future to know exactly what will happen But I will never forgive 2042 for setting up a story then immediately saying "There is no campaign because it's a war on all fronts" well then start with that Take a note from Battlefield 4 and 3, hell maybe even the Bad Company games
And of course, not even a week after this is uploaded, a Russian anti-satellite weapon test generates debris that resulted in the International Space Station crew being told to take shelter. Of course, it was always going to keep getting busier up there, but that's just too on the nose.
in 2023 this future is starting to become more and more of a reality.. The floods, droughts, hurricanes, and everything are just getting worse... I think that Battlefeild predicted the future. I dearly hope I'm wong.
@@totallycherri5608sorry to say but you are right and it's happening now. Prepare accordingly or perish in the new brave world. 2040 will be the calmness
This honestly has to be one of the most terrifying game stories I've seen. Why? Because this is real. This is an extremely possible outcome of our future, and it's scary. Hell, we've already had some hurricanes that can be considered a category 6. Look up "what if a billion people became refugees?" And the first thing that should pop up is an article that has the title "Climate crisis could displace 1.2bn people by 2050, report warns." This article is from September of 2020 by the way. Granted, it's an online article so take it with a grain of salt, but I bet EA got at least part of their idea from that article.
You better believe it dude, I don't think I will ever get to enjoy my retirement due to chaotic late 21st century. Better enjoy my leisure lifestyle now, before I got to fight over scraps of food in 2063.
Rumors are that the next game will take place in the same timeline and around the same time as 2042 (could be a prequel) so we might get a campaign that shows these events
@@lobaandrade7172 that would be cool, imagine a multiplayer mode, where you fight to protect refugee channels. One side trying to close them, the other trying to open them.
Greatest intro I’ve seen in a game hands down, got me hyped. Sadly the game doesn’t focus on it besides some of the maps😔 hopefully they switch it around tho
apparently the game was going to be a battle royale and they made a last second decision to try for a battlefield game... that actually might be why the maps are so big and open.
@@Cynlixal yeah I seen a vid about it, sucks for the devs having to deal with the backlash even tho it was the higher ups silly decisions tryna copy apex and be a hero shooter.
So I guess this means Hannah's sacrifice is the canon ending to BF4. And they've shown us what happens to Pac already in the story trailer, so what about Recker or the rest of the Valkryie? I hope they just don't simply sweep them aside and pretend they don't exist.
I have a theory for that: I think both Recker and Blackburn are still alive and could actually appear in future updates, Although Recker's age is not specified, i think he's like 2-3 years older than Pac (which would be 31-32 in the Events of 4, 53-54 in the events of 2042) Also, Hannah death is not confirmed yet, since his body was not retrieved, possibly due to having swam until arriving to the coast. So this gives a Plot-Twist possibility.
@@XaviMD3KB Recker didn't said a word in BF4 and if he appears in 2042 then which voice would they put him? Also you think that he could be 53-54 years old, then he would have the same age as Irish
When a battlefield game lore looks like itll have the best campaign you’ve ever played, turns out to not have one at all and instead your characters say jokes at the end of bloody battles
I keep coming back here because I can't find this fucking cool ambiance/music in the background I'm pretty sure someone can get into the game files and find, pull the music out and upload it
Not really as this situation was called for politically by Belarus flying these people in and lying to them - and the EU being unwilling to distribute a couple of thousand refugees/immigrants, have them filing for asylum or residence, process these accordingly and subsequently allow them to stay or send them home. No, instead they are creating yet anotherr 2015 scenario, allowing this vile POS ruling over Belarus to gather people at the border until the situation escalates.
Damn, if the was a single player campaign based on this storyline i would have bought the game. No more WW2 settings, the dystopic near future is much more interesting.
it's actually getting real, Russia prepared to escalate, regional conflicts reaching levels not seen years, civil unrest on the rise, drouts, climate change now in starting swing. 😐
The amount of detail on this intro is outragous. 0:00 - 0:10 "A view from earth from space, as it zooms into a distant satellite, as the narrator explains the accomplishments mankind has made in its existence." 0:13 - 0:16 "The text on the satellite reads as follows (Top to Bottom) - 'Shearwater I' 'Canadian Narcom Region' 'Steadfast Operation Refuge Center' '11237C-H' (The caution label is unreadable.)" 0:22 - 0:30 - "The camera pans to the underside lens of the satellite, signaling it is pointing downward, zooming into it revealing the 'internet' or 'technology' that is within. (Technology and the internet is really important at this time.) A text that reads '2024' shows, starting a timeline to follow." 0:32 - 0:38 "A news report on the new 'Category 6' hurricane has just hit the United States, devastating homes and causing state-wide blackouts (In the news report, it is specifically stated Florida was struck by the 'Category 6' hurricane.) The text on the news flash is as follows - 'GOVERNER ISSUES EVAC FOR ENTIRE STATE' '2 - NEWS' 'Armed Florida Man Gets DUI While Driving Jetski Down Turnpike'." 0:40 "Sea Levels rise, becoming a worldwide problem." 0:42 "The text immediately shows a different problem in the world, fires starting in Europe. The text in french, 'Croire A L 'Etat' is shown, showing that it is in France." 0:45 - 0:50 "It then shows more fires going uncontrolled in the baltics in Europe, showing the time jump with the large text '2028'. A map is shown right after, the fires being too uncontrollable and spreading to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, affecting the Agriculture, Air Quality, Power Plants, and Water Reservoirs." 0:52 - 0:56 "The narrator starts to get dark now, stating how the problems in the world have affected peoples livelihoods and wellbeing. The camera pans above the 'Shearwater I' satellite, showing the uncontrolled fires below and how bad they have actually gotten." 0:58 - 1:05 "It is shown in the beginning that due to climate change and rising waters, South and Central Florida has flooded over completely, leaving nearly half the state underwater. Another year is shown, '2030', yet another time jump. Text that reads, 'THE COAST WE KNOW IS GONE' is stated by the Florida Governor in the subtitle. Florida is still experiencing flooding and harsh weather conditions." 1:06 - 1:08 "The camera pans over to South America, several countries have started to collapse or are at risk. The date '11/23/2032' is shown in the text, this is the date when countries across the world started to fall downhill." 1:10 - 1:11 "Multiple news headlines are shown as follows - 'Euro Falls To $0.08' 'We Must Create NEW STATE - Former Venezuelan Comittee' 'BRAZIL To Fail' (Rest is unreadable or cutoff)." 1:12 - 1:13 "More text is shown, more riots have started to occur due to Euro unstability and government unstability, a news orginization 'Truth Speaker' saying that 'Protests are no longer enough'." 1:15 - 1:20 "Mass migration due to unstable economy and government has started, with a majority of Europe migrating to more stable economies. In the map, it is shown the following countries have failed / closed for different reasons. The text on the map is as follows - 'UK - TOTAL COLLAPSE' 'FRANCE - PUBLIC RIOTS' 'NETHERLANDS - CLOSED BORDER' 'GERMANY - FAILED STATE' 'SWITZERLAND - CLOSED BORDERS' 'CZECHIA - CLOSED BORDERS' 'POLAND - CLOSED BORDERS' 'ITALY - CLOSED BORDERS' 'IRELAND - (text cutoff in beginning) CELTIC UNION'. The map now changes, showing the direction where refugees are headed in Europe, with the large text in the corner '2035'. The countries they are migrating to are - SWITZERLAND, AUSTRIA, and CROATIA." 1:22 - 1:34 "More news headlines, stating that 1 billion people in Europe are displaced as there is no law and order. These displaced people band together as one for survival, calling themselves 'NO-PATS', as they are a non-patriated group looking to survive in the now lawless and government-less parts of the world. Many people and news are stating that they are nothing more than a 'status symbol'." 1:35 - 1:42 "The year '2040' is flashed on the screen, with news in the background saying there is only two stable countries; Russia and the United States Of America. The camera pans out and the sattelite is shown again in space." 1:43 - 1:54 "The satellite, 'SHEARWATER I' that was shown in the entirety of the intro opens when the narrator says the two countries are beginning to fight eachother over the last resources they can scrounge up in the middle of everything. It is revealed that the satellite isn't just a camera or whatever the viewer thought it was; it is an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) device that is weaponized by the USA to disrupt the worlds electric grid and infrastructure. The last we see is a blinding light and then it cuts to alarms and a black screen." 1:55 - 2:13 "The camera is now back in the 'internet' as headlines and news report on the mass outages and disruptions the EMP caused. Multiple news anchors and shows are heard and seen cutting out and the broadcasts being disrupted, people clueless on what is happening worldwide. Headlines start to appear, saying - 'GREAT RESET SATELLITES LOST' 'BLACKOUT CAUSES FACEOFF NO SPYING NO TRUST' 'GLOBAL ???? BREAKDOWN'. Due to the severety of 'SHEARWATER 1' EMP all the satellite in space have gone offline as well as power grids, etc. People calling the situation 'GREAT RESET' with humanity losing everything that it has achieved, the start of the intro being a distant memory now. One of the news anchors says 'Russia and the US have both been pointing fingers' giving the hint that the US hasn't come out with the news that they did it, in attempt to defame Russia for the EMP." 2:14 - 2:17 "Russia and the USA officially declare war on eachother, with the text saying 'THE WAY FORWARD IS WAR' with both flags next to eachother." 2:18 - 2:24 "War footage is shown, with another headline - 'AMERICANS SEIZING BORDER ZONES'. After the headline, the text in blue pops up - 'DOHA.MIS DEBRIEF CONNECTION SECURE', showing that this is the start of the USA / RUSSIA war in BATTLEFIELD 2042." 2:25 - 2:45 "The narrator does a debrief on what they have to accomplish in this mission in DOHA, retrieve the 'SHEARWATER I' EMP satellite before the Russians do. It is shown that the NO-PATS are specialized contractors working for the US government in this mission." END
The seasonal lore updates on the EA website reveal the Shearwater satellites and Steadfast Refuge's true purpose. They are geoengineering devices designed to mitigate or reverse the effects of climate change, and the Steadfast Refuge operations center in Exposure are where they are run from. The EMP scene is a failed test of the original in 2040 that caused the Blackout.

I hate how Dice and EA advertised this is a direct sequel to BF4 but then had the balls to charge $70 for no campaign and a broken multiplayer. Is it even a game at that point?
It’s like dice gave us an impressive preview of a cool mansion from the outside, but wont let us in. I dont know how this backstory can play out in multiplayer, since the same thing happen to bf4, but it had a singleplayer campaign which works quite well
