The last game set in a period in a Battlefield game was "Battlefield: Bad Company Vietnam", a game EA set out to virtually no fanfare. But I honestly wouldn't mind another WWII CoD or BF game, it would ironically be a breath of fresh air.

CoD is like fast food: Tasty and easily accessible, but eat it too much and you'll quickly grow sick of eating it, as well as become literally sick from various heart-related diseases. Battlefield is a flambe dish that keep trying to top itself with a bigger and brighter flame: Visually impressive, until the bastard burns your face off and sets the rest of the restaurant on fire. Both are losers as far as I'm concerned. Ghosts for its dogged mediocrity, and BF4 for being buggier than government housing.

It would if the dog was even playable more than in two micro sections of the game, sadly it is just another same cod with a dog as a marketing gimmick. I would love to see infinity just try a bit more than this.

I had more fun playing FC3: Blood Dragon for 5-6 hours than I have the entire time playing BF4 (huge disappointment IMO). As for Ghost, I wouldn't touch that shit with a ten-foot pole.
Am I the only one who's getting tired of the whole Regenerating life mechanic in every single FPS as of now? I honestly wish they would go back with the classic health packs mechanic. At least with that it has some challenge.

Why not both, not airborne had segmented seven health you healed up to 1, 2, 3, or 4 health segments with health packs getting you to the next segment once you go below it. Plus the open levels and parachuting mechanic was really good.

Battlefield needs to return to 2142, which had mechs, drop pods and gunships. and it was freaking epic... and it's one of those future scenarios where the US doesn't exist anymore!
Perhaps if Activision hadn't rushed this year's output, they wouldn't have to play the blame game with the launch of new consoles for diminished returns... which I don't remember harming Call of Duty 2's a damn bit
BF4 is still buggier than all hell. Better? Sure, in ways. Call of Duty is still a turd, but god damn BF4 really needs to start working properly. Net code is in shambles, servers are shit, one hit kill bugs, team play is a joke, classes are unbalanced, and most of the time because of that people play the gun instead of the class. Now you have 500 medics running around not even healing each other as they go, all so they can use the over powered weaponry and pretend they're cool for a night. The game is far from playable, and it's a little disappointing you didn't bring up these massive issues that it has. A squad based game in which you can't join as a squad? What the fuck DICE? Obsidian couldn't release a game this broken. Tired, mini rant over. Will await a review of each, would like to hear you speak of all of their shortcomings, especially with Battlefield 4.
The reason I think that FPS will continue to be set in modern era has nothing to do with gaming, but with movies. You see the action hero, the 1980's and yearlier action hero is gone from the silver screen. They all went to the video game. Since that is where the millenials are getting their fix on action "movies" there is no need to stop, at least in the economical sense. Meanwhile epic movies are not gone in the silver screen. Worse yet in the video game format, unless you are playing Total War you never end up seeing the whole action. In Chivalry and any other hack and slash or action adventure, due to memory constrains of this gen it's almost impossible to do fights like the Siege of Rhodes, let alone the battles of the Roman Empire like Cannae or Cathago invasion.
Both Battlefield 4 and CoD Ghosts sucks. Battlefield 4: Crashes every 5 mins on launch, Game breaking glitches, Feels like a beta CoD Ghosts: Same crap, False advertising, Bad optimization
They're both overrated as shit and saying one is better than the other is like saying I'd rather get kicked in the nuts than stabbed in the dick. Brutal Doom is my FPSOTY every year.
As shocking as this may sound, but I prefer the original Doom over both Battlefield and Call of Duty. And if you got the Brutal Doom mod mounted with it, it gets a hell of a lot better.
and still none of these damn games even come close to the level of Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. Yeah, the servers are going down for that game but it's over 10 years old and it was always completely fucking free to play and free to mod. Still I think Enemy Territory is the best multiplayer shooter to this day
speaking of fresh(er) FPS games, i recommend you guys try Verdun on steam. its sort of like a WW1 Battlefield game, except it is based around capturing enemy trenches instead of flags. also, no player-controlled vehicles. there is artillery and gas attacks, though
I'd rather play BF4, BUT...that isn't saying much, because I found the game (from what I played of it) to be very mediocre, but compared to Ghosts, it's 100X better.

Well BF4 has aged surprisingly well since it's inception. With every bug fixed, the NetCode strengthened and improved, and with community designed and tested maps that envoke callbacks to superior Battlefield games (BF2), Battlefield 4 is surprisingly enjoyable and I dare say the best modern Millitary shooter of the 2010's that is not Spec Ops The Line.
We have that already. Dark Souls. Chivalry. Skyrim... modern fpses stay the fuck where you are and don't ruin it for the rest of us because as pleasing as the thought of fighting in ancient wars sounds, we know what you've done with the shooter genre already.
Chivalry is the only game you listed that could be considered a "first person slasher", as the other two are role playing games. Let me reiterate his point: What the hell happened to Project Offset!? If con companies weren't so focused on making Generic Shooter: Iraq edition, they could actually add some variety to the market. Why? Because unlike the transition from WWII games to modem military shooters, this would require a major overhaul in how gameplay is handled to begin with (as opposed to the previous example which is basically a reskin and a face lift.
None of what you just mentioned had battles in them. Even saying Skirmish is generous to Chivalry. Go play some Mount and Blade and educate your self on a warfare game, not medieval adventures.
All I can say is that 2013 was a good year for FPS (single-player FPS that is), thanks to games like Shadow Warrior, Metro: Last Light and Rise of the Triad. I never felt the desire of playing the latest Call of Duty and Battlefield games.

I can definitely say that they have way less bullshit than their predecessors in terms of multiplayer. Both of their campaigns are half-assed and 4 hours long. Ghosts has Squads and Extinction going for it.
Tremendous video! I actually do like the FPS genre, but these types of games have been bastardizing it for far too long now. FPS have literally lost everything that makes them fun (cool weapons, good enemy variety, smart AI, good level design). I still enjoy Battlefield multiplayer, but the single player is nothing short of god awful. Even then, the series no longer allows for modding and the games have a 2-3 year lifespan tops (compared to Battlefield 2, which still has an active community).
I can actually agree with a medieval Call of duty/ battlefeild game. I actually suggested it to my cousin ( a huge CoD player) once and even he likes it.
You know, one thing I must say I like about these videos, was that you made sure to , you know, actually play these games and make legitimate observations and comparisons when anyone else would have just said they both suck for being shooters, provide no arguments against them, and people still would have ate it up. Obviously I am not a fan of either of these games, but it is good to see that there are actual suggestions for improvement instead of just ranting and game bashing just for the sake of hatred. Kind of surprising considering this comes from a show called the rageaholic.

What you described in the medieval setting was actually present in Battlefield 2142 with the Titan gamemode... On that note, DICE has an entire legion of fans that would be ready to blast open Fort Knox for the sole reason of showering them in fucking gold if they did as much as announce a sequel to 2142 that included Titan gamemode, so why the hell do they insist on milking the MMS genre dry when interest in said genre is undeniably fading faster than GTA Online's non-modding userbase?
I like comparing the development process of these games to that of the lightbulb. You can make a lightbulb that costs fractionally more than what they do now, but last decades. Manufacturers chose not to because then you won't be buying any lightbulbs 2 weeks from now and they won't make any morey. In the same way, EA and Activision could make an FPS that has a great story, unique multiplayer and high replay value, but then they wouldn't be selling you a metaphoric lightbulb next year and the business model they decided to stick to would crumble.
My only wish is that we one day get a game like BF4 but with none of the ridiculous DLC challenge unlock requirements for the guns and gadgets. I'm sick to fucking death of having to play game modes that nobody plays and use equipment that's better suited to their original roles than as AT and anti-infantry implements, JUST for the mere privilege of being able to access half of an expansion pack's content.
This has been my prayer for I don't know how long now. The first SoF game was such a great popcorn FPS game. It was like a brainless but imminently fun action movie in video game form, and it was so much fucking fun to play. The closest I've found since then has been the Crysis series, of which the first game is stellar.
They attempted to make a new one with Payback, but they turned it into a piss poor Call of Duty clone. Seems like a popular trend in the modern game industry to bring back a beloved series, only to run it into the ground *coughthief4coughcough*

Its more preference Cod is more fast paced on smaller map sizes allowing for for of a lone wolf type of gameplay in which u wouldn't have to give a shit about your team while in bf4 I'm not saying its slow but not as fast as cod cause of such large map size allowing for vehicles and a teamwork aspect which is much to be loved so in term don't hate on one game, if u don't like it well, that's god damn nice for u
