Serious question: Are academics in Iran living in a parallel universe, where they have the other piece of the puzzle? Like is there not a lot of interchange between the west and whatever historical resources they have in Iran, or do we really not know much about the Persian way of fighting
@adventuresinhistoryland5501
@adventuresinhistoryland5501 9 месяцев назад
Scholars in Iran have the benefit of easier access to archeology but they have the same General sources, especially for this period, due to the loss of imperial records after the fall of the Achaemenids and successive upheavals, and the loss of Classical Greek texts etc. There’s probably some sort of undiscovered record somewhere yet to be found but for now, the Iranians know what we know in terms of sources.
@naan-jf9gh
@naan-jf9gh 3 месяца назад
@@adventuresinhistoryland5501 The Iranians also have their own interpretation and cultural contexts. But due to the recent rise in right wing racism and rejection of academia as "woke" I doubt that conversation can be had without some angry Greek screaming at everyone for revisionism.

Hmmm, I preferred History Hit as there the interviewer didnt keep interrupting Dr. Roel in his lecture. After all, he and what he says is why we are here. Its best practise to invite and let them talk.
@adventuresinhistoryland5501
@adventuresinhistoryland5501 8 месяцев назад
It’s not a lecture but an interview and a chat. It’s what we do here. But thank you for watching and for your comment it helps the Channel, as not all of us have Dan Snow’s budget.

@@adventuresinhistoryland5501 Anytime and yes, I am aware that it wasnt an university lecture. Neither was the other one I mentioned, to be honest. It was just, that the interruptions by the interviewer didnt lead a wayward speaker back to the topic or sharpen the topic by making statements clearer.... Dr.Roel is pretty easy to understand, explains everything he says and as far as I follow his interviews and lectures online, that man keeps track of his topic, time and red thread. Your interviewer was unfortunately distracting IMHO and at least I was here to listen to Dr.Roel and not to someone else however knowledgeable he is on the subject. And yes, I understand it is tempting to chim in. From my point of view, not a question of budget but a question of self restraint on the part of the interviewer. But....I mean it only as (hopefully somewhat useful) feedback, not as offense.
@Unknown-jt1jo
@Unknown-jt1jo 2 месяца назад
 @nachtschatten8710 Agreed. I thought it was slightly distracting when the interviewer introduced his own pet theories (like the idea that the Macedonians got the idea of combined arms from the Persians). However, he did also ask some great questions--which allowed Roel to shine.

Is this a serious question? Where the hell do you think the black soldiers cane from? Egypt was only minority black and it was in open rebeliion half the time.

@@thewinner7382 Hey ding bat look into the Black solders who served on Persian ships. Greeks made many vases of them. After the battle of Salamis. Then there are the blacks who served in the Great battle against the 300 hundred Spartans. Herodotuts tells it to us all. Do you think black people lived just in Africa in Ancient times ? Yes you probably do because you a pin head. Look at the sculpture in Persepolis of black people bringing gives to the Persian Kings.
@DamnYouDamnMe
@DamnYouDamnMe 7 месяцев назад
I think by the time of the battle of Cunaxa the greek armies had become so professional that the Persians knew that they did not stand a chance. I agree with Roel that this was not the case at the battle of Plataea but the Peloponnesian war did have that impact so by the late 5th century we no longer have militias but real armies.
