Ok, a few points, so you don't scream at us too much in the comments. :-) 1. We know that in many Eastern European languages the word "prince" means "the son of the ruler", "heir". In English prince means both "ruler of the princedom - knyaz/knez" and "son of the ruler/heir". 2. The lack of the cannons for the Ottomans during the battle of Vaslui is strange. There are a few explanations - they were left at the siege of Shkodra or were left behind with the baggage train, as Suleiman Pasha wasn't expecting a battle. 3. Dobruja remains an interesting case, multiple sources depict it either under Wallachian or Ottoman control prior to the conquest of Chilia by Stephen. 4. It is extremely difficult to research the Ottoman battles, the sources are often conflicting, so if you see something that you consider wrong, try putting yourself in our shoes - we have to go through multiple primary and secondary sources and logic our way to the coherent story. 5. We made a mistake with Stephen Batory, the name is right, but the portrait wrong. 6. We don't have time/resources to add subtitles in other languages, but English. You can help us quite a bit by adding subtitles in your native language. Thank you in advance! prntscr.com/k9hiqn
Kings and Generals i mean i have already told ya guys which should be easy but Zeta modern day montenegro existed as a nation under the crnojvic dynasty and specialy at this time when seige of shkodra began lord or prince of zeta helped the vencian city of shkodra
Mouad Ghorbal + Don't forget Suleiman Pasha's stupidity. Quality difference between suleiman pasha and Mehmed the Conqueror. We saw that in battle of valea alba.
As a citizen of Moldova, I am delighted that you covered the battle for Vaslui and the greatest leader in our history Stefan Cel Mare(Stephen the Great, now a Saint). Loved the video.
Why the hate mate? If you did a little search you'd know Romania and Moldova are brother nations and Stephen is considered a great one in both states. Also it is not by choice we(Moldova) are in the current situation we are now. We once were the Principality of Moldova, but we got really fucked by the Russian Empire which got the modern Moldova territory in 1812. Do you think we wanted that? Also the place of battle does not have any importance. Do you think Alexander the Great should lose all his validity for the Greeks because he won battles in modern day Iraq/Iran/Turkey? Fuck no. So start using your brain, cause at the moment you don't.
well, he was brave, as we already know trough his actions, he was highly capable in military tactics and also very skilled in diplomacy. he was surrounded by enemies like golden horde, ottomans, polish, his wallachian "fellows" or hungarian foes but managed to outperform them using all the war lessons from the book, winning 34 from 36 battles that he personally participate and another 4 lead by his commanders.
@@KingsandGenerals It's still unclear but Stephen's army in the 2nd battle was smaller than the first. He didn't have the time to assemble them again this time and the Mongol attack hindered that as well. Without the peasant conscripts he wouldn't have had more than 15.000 soldiers. Of course, these would have been the best troops by far.
@@johnjcb4690 First of all, it was 100000 vs 15000 Second of all, the Moldavians were armed with cannons, muskets and crossbows. Third of all, the Moldavians used the Hussite Wagonburgs.
The valley battle is probably the best battle I've ever seen. Somehow winning against a vastly superior army using nothing but strategy and extreme trickery is amazing. Stephen is pretty fucking epic.
Berrak kısa And about a hundred years later in 1565, we see that army again except they get defeated by less than 10,000 Knights and civilians. But I'll have to agree with you, leadership matters more than the number of soldiers you have to throw at the enemy.
Nemo Nobody not much... Leaders of larger nations were constrained in such a way that these leaders wouldnt really have had the chance to shine. In France the terrain was a major military factor preventing these kind of amazing victories, tradition, and the nobility were a political factor against this too. (The king spent 90% of the time trying to prevent his knights from mindlessly charging forward.)
You easily forget what kind of mess you have to deal with if you are ruler of large nation. Everytime riots in your massive empire when you seem weak and battles with neighbors along the empire massive borders on every front. You have army in east to deal with some riot, oh yeah fuck you, your neighbor rival country on western border take advantage and attack you or your allies/vassals.

As a Romanian & native of Wallachia, I salute you for making such a well-detailed & exciting episode about our ancestors struggles against the Ottoman Empire. I love your channel, the content is amazing! You make history fun & entertaining, and that isn't an easy task. So much respect & admiration for your fantastic work!
@CipiRipi00 The weakness of his foes does not in any way undermine Muhammad the Conqueror's strength. You repeated "they had no army anymore" twice in your comment which is utterly absurd. Civil wars do not deem a country's army non-existent. Let's not forget the Ridda wars after which the Muslims immediately destroyed both the Roman and Persian Empires (It's interesting how the Roman and Persian conflict is brought up to undermine the Muslim's victory whereas the Ridda wars in which 70K companions of the Prophet were killed is never mentioned whatsoever). Let's also not forget the modern American civil war after which there's... well the America of WW1, WW2 and today. Not to mention the medieval civil Ottoman wars less than a century before the events of this video. The Ottomans forces were divided, their borders changing and disputed, their strength completely directed at forces within their Empire, yet not a single one of the multiple and powerful Christian Empires bordering the Ottomans had or could have had dared to break treaty and grasp at Ottoman lands. @CipiRipi, your opinion on Muhammad not being one of the better commanders of his era (as put by @Kings and Generals) is negligible in comparison with the aforementioned undeniable facts. The factors affecting any war throughout history are many. However, the Conqueror's strength is crystal clear. Sultan Muhammad (“محمد” spelt Mehmet by the Turkish) the Conqueror personally led his first campaign at the age of 19, conquered Constantinople at the age of 21 and ended the Byzantine Empire. Within 10 more years, he led 11 more campaigns, and then another 6 for a total of 19 personal campaigns. The Sultan annexed the Serbian and Morean Despotate, Lesbos, the Kingdom of Bosnia, Karamanids, colony of Negroponte and the entire Black Sea. He also ended the Empire of Trebizond. These achievements testify for the Sultan’s ruling, religious, strategic and engineering genius. If the powers of his time seemed fragile and weak, then that is due to his mighty overshadowing existence. لتفتحن القسطنطينية، فلنعم الملك ملكها، ولنعم الجيش ذلك الجيش" أخرجه الإمام أحمد في مسنده” (i.e. “Verily, Constantinople shall be conquered. Praise be to its conqueror and praise be to his army” narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad) -A proud Muslim Crimean
CipiRipi00 All you fake european information is for make us black like your ancestor did they can not stand that we were the strongest. We ask for peace but konstantinos think that he was strong he even asked other countries (friends) to help him, but those who were scared knew themselves who was the strongest and let him down. In short, konstantinos also had it wrong and thought it was strong.
@CipiRipi00 We are not talking about aftermath. Stephan defeated suleiman pasha and mathias corvinus at the battlefield but lost against mehmed the conqueror. Stop denying fact.
Wow! Stephen's drums really did quite an effect in disorganizing the Ottoman lines in that battle its crazy! Ps. I love that the icon of Mehmed II keeps flipping as he moves around hehehe I look forward for more Ottoman coverage!
The Greek Genocide by Nicholas Siderakis It all came to an abrupt end 100 years ago A place where dreams and myths were born - Amazons, Argonauts, Perseus Turkish Ottomans calling an extinctions to a Greek ethnic group that has been native to the region for over 3,000 years All orchestrated by 3 successive governments - The Ottomans, Attaturk, and the Young Turks The Pontic Greeks driven from their homes By ethnic and religious fanatics Churches either destroyed or converted Over 750,000 slaughtered or sold into slavery From 20% of the population to just 2% Forced marches, rape, beheadments, and cutting off limbs An entire population evicted from their homeland An entire population cease to dream and speak of myths
I remembered watching and reading about this battle and this has to be one of the most planned and well-executed tactics in the medieval warfare. Battle drums to lure the Ottomans across the river and then force them to turn to the wrong side. Not sure if this was all planned out by Stefan or he adapt his tactics upon seeing the Ottoman crossing the river (I am not sure if he could have predicted that Suleiman will cross the bridge, since he was originally on the same side with the Vaslui town). Mehmed must have learnt of Stefan's talent and decided not to take any form of risk. He carefully ensure supply line and move slowly to avoid separation. The later battle of Valea Alba forced by Mehmed was a simple and standard battle in which Mehmed simply outnumbered.
Unfortunately, we don't know more about the previous battles Stephen fought, so it is hard to say. But, he won quite a few against the superior opponents, so he knew how to fight outnumbered.
Stephen ruled for 57 years(1457-1504), had 36 battles and won 34. And to thank God for his victories, he built monasteries. He's a legendary ruler and also a saint here in Romania.
I know the aria of Vaslui battle very well , My familly descends from moldavian soldiers compesated by Stephan with land on the surrounding hills. It was a muddy swamp valey ( now a lake) and in winter the fog is incredible thick and there is an echo so strange that amplifies the sonds. Spooky place and my grandparents told me stories with turkish soldiers ghosts.Stephan knew the place well because he lived in Vaslui in his youth.
I thought of fixing a few innacuracies, but your pinned comment made me change my mind and tackle other subject. I was trying to imagine to fit your shoes, guys, and that wouldn't be easy. This video containing so many details and wow, the cartography is op! Maybe you wonder what is with these principalities? Where are they today? Well, principality of Moldavia and Wallachia united in 1859 and Transylvania was granted to the newly formed principality after Romanian participation in the WW1, thus resulting, more or less, modern Romania! Extra facts: the name Valea (valley) Alba (white) was given to that particular valley where the 1476 battle was fought due to the high number of bones present everywhere there. Peter Aaron, Stephan's uncle lured his brother (Bogdan, Stephan III's father) into a trap at a wedding and it is said he personally beheaded his bro. Stephen never forgot this. After the battle of Vaslui, Stephan was not content with the result as some units didn't do their job properly so he executed some boyars for this. After Mircea the Old's reign, Dobrudja fell into the firm grip of the Ottomans and Romania would receive this province in the 19th century. Ty for this vid, K&G!
If you see any mistakes, do comment, we are always open to criticism. We just want you guys to know that we try to take into account all sources, so whenever there is a discrepancy, we have to make a decision.
should also have added that Stephan is known as "the great" not "the 3rd" as a little puff for his bravery even though he was pretty small in stature (that's what she said), just like Vlad is known as "the Impaler" or "Dracul/Dragon". still, got to say, never learned that Stephan got the title of "champion of christ" from the pope...you'd think that's a pretty big deal.
Dobrudja has never been romanian before the end of the 19th century. Dobrudja has been a bulgarian land from 681 up until 1422 (with an interruption from 1018-1187, because of the East Romans)

It is truly amazing how it is very hard to find good reading material on Stephan III of Moldavia, who clearly was one of the great captains of war. I am very impressed by this video and the knowledge that has been provided.
Respect for Kings and Generals for not giving up in searching historic sources for covering one of the greatest periods of the Romanian medieval history.Indy Neidell who covered The Great War channel on youtube apologized he couldn`t find detailed information on the most important allied victories in 1917 : the battles from Mărăşeşti, and Oituz. I have a regret I could`nt help him because I have seen the episode much later. He assumed there are informations in Romanian
The strategy and tactics of Stephen III leading up to and during the Battle of Vaslui are truly remarkable. A sure rival to Hannibal Barca in my opinion. Such discipline, trust and training would be required to pull off every move with such synchronicity.
Mehmet just knows how to get the job done. It's surprising he lived through so many conflicts and yet continued putting the Ottomans in the front foot at every turn. Any other ruler would've crumbled under so much pressure. The siege of Constantinople is symbolic to his style. There's no viable option? Fine. I'll sail my ships on land instead.
People obsessed with knowledge and high degree of curiosity like Mehmet II are usually super patient and determinant handling things. Typical mindset of an inventor/scientist also.
Well... I think it is the best documentary about this battle. This is the most famous battle in the medieval era for my country, Romania. I have to say that i am quite surprised by the way you made this documentary. In a very, very positive way. I know this battle very well (really well, have my word) but, as a true history lover, i know that you can always learn more, as you never know everything. I watched dozens(maybe hundreds) of documentarys of this battle. Some of them said things that were wrong, others weren't specifing them at all. But your documentary is the first one in which i hear incredible details, some of which I I honestly didn't knew( hit in the ego XD ). Anyways, just wanted to mention yet again what an amazing work you do. P.S: would you consider covering more of the romanian history(i.e. dacian wars of 101-102;105-106 or maybe some modern history, mainly from the Crimean War to the Cold War) I am asking this because my last request was of the Dark Age, and I received the Catalunian Plains:) Sorry if i sound arrogant, I am super excited every time you post something, especially my own history. Have a great day!
Thank you for watching! And please consider sharing. :-) Regarding the requests, we don't really do them outside of Patreon, but the plan is to work hard and eventually cover all the battles in history. Sounds ambitious and will take time, but, we will get there. :-)
Kings and Generals Thank you for the response. I already shared all of your videos, which I usually watch twice. Regarding the patreon, I am not curently in the financial situation to be able to donate, but once I will be in that position, you will be the first to be supported. @@gicady Don't cry,,Mehmed was the best commander,,His ability of moving armies through the rough terrain of Moldova speaks volumes of his intelligence plus nobody could destroy the walls of Constantinople before Mehmed II.
@@cormoranuud no they werent Mehmed already had cannons They became popular by the end of the 14th century But mehmed cannons were small The Hungarian engineer orban proposed that he could make a cannon far bigger and stronger than the ones mehmed had which barely made any significant damage on constantinople walls And so 'Basilica' was born, it took 3hrs to reload but it fucking made damage on the walls Despite having this mehmeds cannons still didnt break the inner walls It was during one of the assaults in the killing fields between the walls that the byzantine left the gates open to the city Mehmed used this blunder and stormed in jannisaries first clearing the entire gate area Rest of the army poured in
I would say that Stephan's balls are around 3 times heavier, since his men were outnumbered at least 3 to 1, not forgetting the madlad strategy that actually worked.
People say these days Ottoman gained power by fighting against weak nations and states, but in fact Ottoman started in place little than current Switzerland and had a lot of struggles such as Timur - Mongols- Crusades- Civil wars and so on, but ceased to exist only after nationalism increased in world. My fav serie :)
You eat weaker ones and gain strength, eventually you become stronger than the ones who were stronger than you in the past. And you continue to eat until you become the strongest. That was pretty much first 50-100 years of the Ottomans. It's kinda fascinating to think even Karamanids were stronger than the Ottomans at the beginning.
Thank you so much for taking Romanian history into account! I hope very much that you will continue doing this in future video. All the best from a very grateful subscriber! :)
I am from Moldova,Stephen was Great and Saint, because after winning every battle he build Church to keep morale of Orthodox Church.Well I love history.
It's quite crazy for the ottoman history that they never managed to fully occupy the territory of modern day Romania - Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania (so-called independent and "protected" by Hungarians). But they managed to make from these areas a quite effective money-making machine 😂😂
Hey guys, I may have an interesting idea: when 1 country (e.g. Ottomans) capture a town/city in another country (e.g. Moldavia), highlight the taken city in the Ottoman’s country colour. Perhaps that’d be a good visual explanation for the taking and losing of cities!
The Ottomans were fortunate to have such a competent ruler like Mehmed II during this period. During this time, the Ottomans had many strong opponents like Skanderberg, Stephan III, Vlad the impaler, Sultan Hassan, King Mathias etc. Thanks to the strong leadership of Mehmed II, the Ottomans were able to ride through this tough period and continue to expand. Any lesser ruler would have failed under such tough circumstances and the Ottoman Empire would have probably shrunk, if not collapsed.
@Koksal Ceylan meh, today Balkan has done nothing but hating each other. Crappy leader like erdogan with his bullshit propaganda only makes it worst. Or nationalist sick fuck like in Greece and Serbia
@Koksal Ceylan What was Albanian/Bulgarian/Romanian/Hungarian/Serbian about the Ottomans? The janissaries and that is about it. It was a Muslim empire.
They still had a massive advantage over these rulers. More soldiers, they controlled strategic territories. In order to be defeated, all these separate rulers, be they eastern European vojvods, The Pope, independent kingdoms, etc. Would have had to unite forces, but they were too occupied betraying and going to war with each other.
Those opponents of mehmed where left alone against the might of the ottoman empire and ultimately betrayed by fellow christians.I don't know how great Mehmed II was but just imagine Vlad the impaler leading a great nation and a big army and having the resources the Ottomans had.Vlad the impaler won his crown after a duel to the death.Won a duel to the death against his father's killer and then forced him to dig his own grave before being beheaded in front of his army.He fought alongside with his soldiers in some battles, disguised himself as an ottoman diplomat and conquered an ottoman stronghold. He was close to kill one of the greatest leaders in history...Mehmed the Conqueror... in a suicidal night attack.
15:00 Stephen didn’t simply agree to pay annual tribute again like as you say here. More context was needed. Stephen and Mehmed negotiated more favourable terms for Moldavia which included paying less tribute than before and the Ottomans agreed as they did not want to deal with Stephan again. This was a huge win for Stephen. Stephen went on to rule for almost 50 years! He fought 36 battles only losing 2. He was a true tactician and military genius.
@@EtruscanTURK-fs9nn yeah, because guess what , there is a problem when you have at least 50k men in every war versus 10-20k men. I wonder who would win

@@su1t0n11 he didn't have all those numbers, his greatest army was probably 60k soldiers and he had to fight on different fronts with a lot of enemies and divide his soldiers and resources and come up with different strategies to fight his enemies. Hello, I’m Moldavian, Vlad and Stephan were brothers in law, that’s the reason of helping each other I guess. Also, Stephan was given the name of “Saint” by the Rome’s Pope, his full name is “Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt”

Yep... let him fight a 125000 vs 38000 fight like stephan did... and see how he did... He was a very carefull leader who used his superior forces to crush an opponent. For real did he ever won a battle where he was outnumbered 5 to 1 like our princes did? Stefan, Vlad, Mihai...always outnumbered always bringing down the hammer on the ottomans. Fun fact: the ottomans named him "the great". Even tough they fought a lot, they somehow had the humbleness required to admit the qualities of their enemies, on both parts
@Dan D I knew stuff that they fought each other and you think I didn't know when Romania united 😐, you forgot to say that the first time all 3 major regions United was under Michael the Brave at Alba Iulia to bad he was betrayed...
I see a massive difference in tactical and strategic competence between western Europe and Eastern Europe during this time. These are competent generals using crafty and effective strategies, whereas the French and English couldn't even control their armies half the time.
Western Europe had what it took, they had both financial and human resources. Now look how Moldova looked on the map, caught between empires with pretensions. If you didn't use some slicker methods to spare your soldiers and resources, you'd be left with no country and no life.

The Chronicle of Moldavia - written by humanist Grigore Ureche ( 'ear' ) - describes Stefan as always knowing how to bounce back from a defeat. After the White Valley, Ottomans plundered Moldavia and took a significant number of slaves. However, as they were crossing the Danube back into occupied territory, Stefan suddenly appeared with an army and charged right at the Sultan. Mehmed is described as mortified and Ureche states that he ordered all loot abandoned, so that the Ottoman Army could cross the Danube faster
That is utter bullshit. Even if it happened, do you really think Thousands of Ottoman soldiers would not fight back & Sultan will simply agree to what Stephen asked him to do?
Most people: Vlad was the best Romanian ruler! Stephen: I fought off the Ottomans, fought off the Golden horde and defeated my important Rival But seriously As far as I have seen many people favor Vlad more, but don't get me wrong he's a great ruler and all but Stephen needs the spotlight

Thank you for this great documentary! I think Valea alba is a Prius victory for Mehmet the Conqueror, Stephan somehow manage to stop him even after defeated by Ottomans. But i cant wait to see Mehmet vs. Vlad!!!
Mehmed II had enemies like Mathias Corvinus, Stephen The Great, Vlad Tepes, Skanderbeg, Uzun Hassan. All of them were strong & capable military leaders. Only Mehmed II could counter such fierce rivals in the region.
And the crusader was 350k army from Varna 1444 until 1480 to attack Mehmed the Conqueror. But Mehmed very genius to handle it. Like play with camel to anticavalry from crusader.
47 years he ruled during an era when they were changing (aka killing) a couple of them rulers every year.... he was a military genius for sure, but what is more amazing about him is his diplomatic skills... that was what actually made him arguably the most successful Romanian voivode... even in this short video you could see that he was able to form alliances with anybody he needed to defeat anybody else... he allied Hungary and payed tribute to the Ottomans to take on Poland, then he allied Poland to beat Hungary, then allied both to beat the Ottomans... and even when he lost against the Ottomans he was able to negotiate a favorable pace as the sultan was exhausted by him... and btw... he only lost like ... a couple of times out of about 40 fights... He for sure earned his name, The Great, and nowadays the Orthodox Church named him also, The Holy - although - fun fact - it is documented that he had a few too many kids even for that era :)
Velkan I was not trying to say that he was stronger and for me it doesn’t matter from what country they came from I saw some videos of Stephen He was unbelievable warrior and we had some great warriors from the Balkans and we should be proud of it unfortunately we didn’t get any help from the west✌️🇦🇩🇦🇱

Great video, I love how you give the entire "geopolitcal" context. Just a little note: the Szekelys are in fact Transsylvanian Hungarians, who had a special semi-sovereign status in the Hungarian Kingdom. So Stephen needed to ask them for help separately, the king of Hungary had not the right to send them anywhere for fighting. They came from their own free will.
Szekelys were not originally hungarians, but were magyarised in the Hungarian plains... They kept their unity and settled into eastern Transylvania to protect it from further invasions because they were badass fighters.
@@balu998 Read your on chronicles... Szekelys were the descendents of the Huns who didnt want to mingle with the other nations in the Pannonian plain.
