This 1988 Navy documentary celebrates the reactivation of the Iowa class battleships, and recalls their historic service of the previous four decades. Part 3 looks at electronics and weapons in action aboard USS Iowa, including the launch of a Tomahawk cruise missile, and the firing of her 16 inch main guns. I went aboard BB-59 Massachusetts today, and while below deck was in pretty good condition, the exterior is where she's really showing her age.

The Lieutenant (O3) at 1:01 was my Commanding Officer on the USS Donald Cook back in 2001. At that time he was a Commander (O5) and retired a few years ago as a full Captain (O6). I would love to see these old girls back in commission, I would jump at the opportunity to get orders to one. But I think their days are long gone.

I could be wrong, but I think those old Iowa-class girls will be called upon again one day.

All four of the Iowas are still subject to recall. None were rendered inoperable. Whoever has said that is incorrect. It is true you couldn't reactivate them over a weekend. But given 6 months you could do it. Even the Alabama and Massachusetts are subject to recall. And they haven't served in the fleet since like 1947. But to this day if they want to modify the ships in anyway that could limit their ability to return to active duty they have to consult the Navy about it.

The Navy may not want the battleships in the active fleet but they know better than anyone the utility of them in heavy combat. So they get to have them waiting without the costs of taking care of them. Its like having their cake and eating it too. Don't believe me look up the terms of those ships donation contracts. It states they can not be altered in anyway that affects their military utility and that they can be repossed by the Navy with no notice.
