Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay in getting the second chapter out. I was racing to get this finished before I went on holiday so there are probably a few errors that snuck in. Hopefully they're not too distracting. I've got a new mini-series planned for August, but we'll be back to the Third Succession War once that's finished. Cheers
Only thing that gave me a double-take was the title of the video (Mechwarrior Lord 😆). I enjoyed this video and appreciate your candid remarks about having to change the process. Overall, as someone who fell into the YT BT/MW hole via Tex a while back, these videos provide a comprehensive look at all the pre-3025 conflicts that I was not familiar with at all. So thanks and enjoy your holiday.
You know... a nice companion series to these videos would be one dedicated to what technology came and vanished from the Golden Age of the Star League through each Succession War.
He knew that the Draconis Combine was going to survive at least another 150 years when his part of the history book was written so he could afford to play around.
Loved it Sven. Don’t worry about the change in plans. I agree it’s hard to have such long jumps between days from published sources. Probably an artifact of the original sourcebook authors treating the Third War as mostly a bunch of identical raids. You have a great opportunity here that I don’t think I’ve seen any other content creator make use of yet. You’re covering the Third War…really covering it. I don’t recall any other thorough treatment of it. That war has more…zeitgeist…than any of the others. It’s stuff like Clinton’s Cutthroats like you did this episode, or the One Star Faith or the Knights of Saint Cameron. It’s the inviolate holiness of Comstar and the sacredness of technology. The vibe of the Third War is unlike any of the others. There is an air of mystery, of the numinous, of the superstitious, that none of the other eras can match.
Thank you. I hope to do it justice. Part of the problem I've had is that the information is spread out over so many sources that stuff is inevitably going to get missed when you're covering such a massive stretch of time. Suspect there'll be more than a few additions once it comes time to create the compilation video at the end of the project.
It's not an area of the lore that gets much attention. I'd like to spend more time discussing Earth in the future because I find its unique culture and history quite interesting.
I think one of my favorite things is whenever you mention someone trying to assassinate the Archon, only to be reminded that that pair of Griffin BattleMechs are very much not for show, and that the Lyran Royal Guard take their duty very seriously. Excellent work as always! You remain my absolute favorite Battletech content creator by a wide margin! Looking forward to the next part!
Have to say, the events in this chapter again raise the question of how the hell one of the big 5 Houses hasnt gone extinct from internecine conflict. Tarragi and Rowena, and Marik-Stanley all seem like they would have rather seen everything burn if it meant they got to rule the cinders.
I, for one, adore this lore series and I'm in no rush for it to end. The more depth, color, and detail the better. This series is so well crafted and curated, we're spoiled for quality. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this series.
New vid about 3rd Succession War comes out: Yeah! Next will be postponed for some time: Noooo! Still looking forward to the mini series! Keep up the good work and I think the overwork back to chronological timeline was a good decision.
Cheers. I feel much more satisfied with it now than I did when I was uploading the smaller chapters to Patreon, so confident I made the right choice. Hopefully the mini-series doesn't disappoint.
Well I hope it was worth staying up. Sorry for the unpleasant hour. I'm going to try and get back to weekend premieres. Hopefully the next one will be at a more reasonable time.
Welcome to Battletech Videos. Tex started small and ended up making feature length Films Red started with 10 minute videos, and now is making a neat 6 hour video Sven is just following the pattern
Cheers. I'm glad I was able to salvage something from it. Was really having to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find anything for the Lyran Commonwealth. The fact that 25 years can pass with barely a mention is why I thought initially it would be better to just cover one nation at a time, but having tried it both ways, I'm much happier with it now.
You're right - you cannot fully address a front by just looking at one side. So much happens behind the lines, too (as you addressed). Keep going with the great vids!
"He had little interest in court affairs, and spent as much time on the front lines as possible. Unfortunately, this came at the expense of the rest of the realm." Oh, I guess that's a hereditary trait.
Oh thanks for covering a little bit of what's going on with comstars rule of the Terran system.... You never really hear anything about how Comstar runs Terra.
Yeah, it's an area of the lore that doesn't get a lot of focus. I actually thought about doing a one-off video on Terra but wasn't sure whether to set it in 2765 or 3025.
I don't care what part of Battletech you want to talk about, I'll listen. I love the videos and the superb editing of the images and music on top of the narrative. It helps that Battletech lore is deep and fascinating.
Proud of it you can rightfully be. Once again you created a thorough, comprehensive and very clearly structured "history lesson". Thank you so much for continually brightening my days! I am always looking forward to seeing one of your tbumbnails in my watch list. Please keep up your great work, there is nothing even remotely comparable I know of.
For me, at least, the Third Succession War series is a countdown to goodbye. I've always planned on reading the books in release order and my project has started, so to avoid getting spoiled when the 4th Sucession War begins I'll have to stop watching, at least until I get done with the novels. What that means for me is that I hope you take your time and don't feel rushed with this project. I love these videos - they're my favorite thing to watch on RU-vid or anywhere else. Please don't feel like you have to cut any corners to get it completed sooner, I much prefer quality over speed.
Well thank you for the support. It'll still be a few months before I get to the Fourth Succession War so hopefully you'll have time to finish those books before I get there. Once I reach the modern era I'll be including book titles in the opening of each video to help people avoid spoilers.
Glad you’re back. Watching this video I really have to say that it’s (at least to me) difficult to really understand how much time passes and where in time we are exactly. Given that it was not a problem before it is definitely a fault of the period of the third succession war itself with how long everything is in that part of lore but it is really difficult keeping track. Three years. Man time flys fast. Already excited to see what you cooked up for this mini series.
Maybe I need to add a year counter in the corner to help people follow along. People have made the suggestion before but because I've always been discussing a relatively brief period I've dismissed it as being more trouble than it's worth.
@@SvenVanDerPlank Before it wasn’t necessary in my own opinion and truly more trouble then its worth because events where all in a close timeframe (as close as it gets with 30 years). But i think the third succession war is far more difficult to follow without on with how much time passes at times between events or the events themselves taking so long. That is at least my problem maybe i am alone on this.
Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this episode, it was truly amazing and I enjoyed it so much! I can’t wait to see whatever comes next! Good luck!
Having seen this, I think you probably made the right decision. A lot of what's actually happening is internal stuff so focusing on only one nation's internal affairs at a time would be confusing and probably lead you to retreading things you already covered. On the subject of RCTs I find them a conceptually interesting formation. They're pretty much built for the smaller, sing world warfare of the 3rd succession war but at the same time represent probably one of the first big innovations in mech deployment since the SLDF. While both build their formations around mechs, RCTs treat them more as a part of a larger whole, having them fall back into a support role when they aren't the best tool for the job. In theory anyway.
Yeah, I'm feeling much better about the end result after the rewrite. I think I initially went for the regional focus because there are long stretches in each Housebook where we get basically nothing for 20+ years. This time it was Steiner but I was able to pick out just enough details from Kurita and Marik to give them a small mention.
Take your time. Battletech lore isn't the standard "these are the good guys, these are the bad guys" tale. Its complex & takes time, especially the Succession Wars.
Such a good video mate, can’t wait for this series to continue and to see your other project too. Enjoy your holiday mate, and take some time to relax too. Oh and finally. Glory to Davion! Shall our ever continuous winning streak continue
Would you consider having the year as a small bug on the corner of the screen as you go? It would help keep the context of time as you jump around in time. I did enjoy your presentation even if you might have found faults with it. Don’t be too hard on yourself as you try new things.
Absolutely awesome! I hope you've been doing well, it's been good over here for me. Still waiting for MW5: Clans to be available for pre-order on Playstation, but I'm pumped!
Thanks. Clans is getting closer now. I'm not going to be able to play it at launch but I've been following the character bios they've been releasing and it looks promising.
Yeah. It wasn't even so bad once I had it fully constructed, it was just incredibly difficult to write it that way because I had to have so many different sources open at once. That made me think it was going to be impossible to present the information chronologically.
Looking forward to a Lyruan fueled spark on 2895 if you have time for it. Surf's up! Also, if not Comstar, then the next best bet I have for who whisked away the Cutthroats would be the Minnesota Tribe.
@@SvenVanDerPlank Rich boy yacht club turned militia flood delta, making waves, ergo surfing pun. As for the spark, that's about how much smaller of a warhead is used than would have been expected back in the first Succession War or the first half of the Second.
So Ives been watching your videos for a while and I’ve always wondered when discussing border movements you use world and systems interchangeably are they the same thing??
Yes and no. I can't think of a single instance where two planets within a single system are controlled by two different factions. I use them interchangeably because the battle will usually take place on the most important world and will give de facto control over the rest of the system after it's over.
I just hallucinated an error there and thought I'd said April by mistake. Is the auto subtitles saying 28th? I'm listening to it back and I don't think I did. Didn't have time to upload the script before I went on holiday so that'll just have to remain like that until the weekend.
44:43 In universe, the AFFS is a model of military excellence amidst a sea of mediocrity and utter foolishness. But in the games...I regularly clownstomp the absolute crap out of the AFFS because they frankly don't field much that's actually scary. (until you get into the assault mech and vehicle range anyway) Valkyries, Enforcers, Hatchetmen, and Blackjacks regularly lose wars of attrition to vehicle regiments in the tabletop. In Mechwarrior 5, it's much the same story, with most of their common mech forces being woefully underarmored and prone to ammo detonation. (with only the Hunchback really giving me any cause for concern)
@@SvenVanDerPlank I wouldn't worry about timing. I'm more interested in getting people to stop saying things like, "Going forward", or, "As a(n) X, I". It's ready when it's ready.
I found this series a few weeks ago and its been really interesting. Its also got me back into playing the Battletech campaign on Steam. Also I was wondering something, at the end of the Star League Civil War (Complete History) what was the track used during the outro?
I now in the mid game of Battletech, I have an Atlas and a King Crab (I also have them in Mechwarrior 5), but now looking back, Battletech seems a much more easier game Mechwarrior 5, that is full of chaos and destruction, pretty fun, but can be really frustrating going blind, but both games really give you a false sense of confidence by giving powerful weapons, but if you make a mistake, you could easily lose them in the battlefield.
Your channel, you do what you want. I had a mild respect for the Drakes. I generally dislike them but respect their soldiery and a few of their leaders. But after this episode, I really loathe the new Coordinator. Drakes are their own worse enemy. Much like the Maricks.
You mean to say you didn't dislike them when you were only slaughtering whole worlds, but a little duplicity in the upper echelons in where you draw the line? I guess there is an honesty to that first part.
It's Dracs... Not Drakes.... Nickname for Draconis Combine is Dracs. FedRats, for Davion or Federated Commonwealth. Cappellans aren't people, so they don't get a nickname. Clanners iz Clanners... I don't think the Lyrans have one to be fair... Marik is just the best so, Glory to Marik!! And the Free Worlds League!!
